RE15 or Varget with SMK 80gr (and/or 69/75/77gr)

I have used Varget and I am pleased with the results.

Any advantage or possibility to switching to RE15?

I know I should test (and will)... but what are you experiences?

Thanks

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

I've been loading Varget and 77 SMKs. RL15 is used by a good majority of match shooters also. I think Varget is a little more temperature stable than RL15. RL15 is a little more energetic.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

In my experience the two are so close. R15 usually gives a very slight velocity advantage. Varget is more temp stable.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

What's the application? It should help with the heavies but if your tube is short will you gain much over Varget. If you compeat at long range probably better to use Varget to avoid any suprises on a very hot day.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

You might give H4895 a try. You can achieve higher velocities and excellent accuracy with no worries of sensitivity to temperature.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

I would go with the Varget over the RE 15 due to varying temps. However, my .223's preferred load is 20.4gr. of H-4198. Good luck.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

Are you asking because you are looking for something specific that Varget is not doing for you? What advantage are you looking for over Varget?

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

If you load in batches for the season, Rock varget cause match to match you will have minimal difference throughout. The down side is there has been some lot to lot variance. But at any given shoot you will have guys doing well with both powders. Buy a lb of each and try them with your load/ rifle.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

I use RL15 for .223's. I was unable to get consistency with Varget.

For 77 SMK's start at 24.0 grains and work your way up. My AR-15 loved 24.5G 77smks seated at 2.260.

My sps tactical loves 24.5G- 24.7G of RL-15

i'm with boone, cept i push 25.2, a lil hot but my mk12 loves it

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

yes 77 SMK's, LC brass, and rem 71/2 primers, also FGMM primers with no change in pressure or velocity

when i say "a lil hot" i mean i see some flattened primers but not bad, never had a ruptured or thrown primer though. Also this load runs right at 2,720 FPS from my gun

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

I use 26 gr of Varget with 69 gr SMK's and LC brass. I shoot them from an 18" gas gun with 8 twist. For me, this is very accurate. 5 shot group covered with a nickel at 200 yards.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

25.2 gr of Varget for me with 69 smk. Temp stable and accurate for both my AR and bolt 223 on Win brass or Remington.

Re: Varget or RE15 for .223

Forget RL-15. AR Comp is much improved. I've switched from Varget to AR Comp in the 308, 223 and 303 Brit.
