I just picked up a 700p .308 and am thinking about cutting it down to either 18 or 20 inches. I am waiting on a suppressor for my .300 win mag and thought why not get a .308 also. So here is my question. How much will cutting the barrel down effect accuracy and velocity with a .308?If any of you have any pics of short .308s post them.

Thanks
Mike

accuracy wont be affected at all as long as the gunsmith does a good job.

as far as velocity, yes you will lose some

out of my factory remington im getting 2580 with 178's

Accuracy, depends on who is doing the cutting and if you reload. Velocity, around 25fps per inch
The Guys at Accurate Ordnance will do the cutting and threading.

I reload, but had good results in the 1:12 with FGMM in 20 and 26" bbl

I just bought a bunch of reloading stuff and am going very slow. I have yet to load a round. I hope to get some ammo loaded this weekend.

Thanks for the pic thread that is the one I was looking for.

Re: Short .308

Im at 18" with my .308, dont have a chrono, but still good out to 875yds. (furthest I have been able to take it on a KD range)

Re: Short .308

Good post, I'm doing the exact same thing and was wondering the same question. keep us posted

Re: Short .308

I dropped my gun off Friday to have it cut down to 18 and threaded and profiled for a suppressor. I will post pics as soon as I get it back.

Re: Short .308

TOdd on magpul dvd claims that 20" is the best. Because a shorter thicker barrel is stiffer and is affected less by harmonics. Sounds right in theory I just don't know. He's shooting 20" 338's past a mile and still sub Moa

Re: Short .308

If it helps - were shooting a .308, 16" barrel to 900m+ on the STALKER GEN 2 sniper weapon system. We're using a 1 in 10 twist 4 groove heavy profile barrel. I do agree with the theory of minimizing barrel whip by using a shorter heavy bull profile barrel

Here is a link to the Snipers Blog page where the standard lighter profile barrel was used. Lighter profile barrel works nicely to 800m+ and there were some nice reviews on the advantages of this shorter barrel

Case in point - shorter works, however the correct twist rate should be used.

Re: Short .308

My budget build remmy cut to 16" will still throw a 168 smk with 44.2 of varget @ 2480 fps. I've had consistent hits out to 825 meters. Waiting on my TBAC 30-BA to see if I can touch 2500 fps.

Overall I'm very happy with its performance for a stock sps barreled action. I figured if I didn't like it I'd rebarrel (out $80-100 for the factory barrel) it and drive on but it works pretty damn good. Win win for me.
