Just bought my Savage and NF 5.5-22x56 3 weeks ago.
First problem:
- shot 285 grain Hordany factory ammo but bolt would not eject cases.

- bought some HSM 250 grain factory ammo had 6 misfires but ejected good.

- bought 300 grain HSM and 4 misfired right out of the gate, sent 2 back through and they fired.

OK....i went out and bought all the reload goodies, i reloaded the first Hornady cases with 285 grain bullets again and all rounds sent with no issues at all. Im pretty sure the resizing fixed the problem.

The rounds that didn't go off seemed to have a lighter pin mark on the primer.

The HSM cases, even though i had 6 misfires, all ejected fine.
This is with the 285 and 300 grain factory ammo. Could bad or cheap primers be doing this?

BTW.... the reloads all have WLRM primers.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I have had almost every Hornady round stick in my Savage as well. I had two missfires with my HSM 250 as well, this was yesterday by the way. Anyway I was told that Hornady brass was soft and that they are loaded a little on the hot side and they get stuck because of that. I am not sure if this true but makes some sense to me. I have not had one piece of HSM stick in my Savage and ran 50 rounds through it yesterday. I have not started reloading yet but will start soon.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Thanks Rob.

After reloading the HSM brass, they all went through no problem. From what i have gathered, the HSM ammo is not the best stuff to buy, i mean its alot cheaper than the others, im sure you get what you pay for. So far the brass seems to be fine for reloading.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Yes, I bought 60 rounds at the same time as the 250. The 250's shot great yesterday. I got my 300 yard zero and started working out from there and ran out of time to try the 300's. I was very happy with the three shot print I got from the HSM. Got a nice picture of it here if you want to see it?

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Love to, thanks Rob.

I have done a 40 round break in and just shooting 100 yards for now. Im just testing ammo now. I have the NF 5.5-22x56 now and my 8-32x56 NF scope will be here Wednesday so i get to dial in all over again.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I did the same thing. First 10 cleaning every shot and then every other one for the first 2 boxes. I had my action bedded and my muzzle break re timed, savage put it on all sideways. Trying to figure out how to post a picture gime a minute.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I can not figure out how to post the photo.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Looks good! Let me know how the HSM 300's shoot.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Hornady uses a soft brass in the 338 lapua and it gives the Savages problems. Every shot of Hornady ammo requires me knocking back the bolt with a block of wood. Lapua and Prvi Partisan don't give me that problem until round 6 or 7 lol

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I have started gathering stuff to do reloading. All the guys I know use the lapua brass and they say its the best. I did have some fustrating trips to the range with the sticking issue. I thought I had a real problem with the gun at first until I tried some other rounds. I have about 80 rounds through it now and i am very happy with it. The only issue I have now with mine is the recoil. I shoot my 50cal all the time and it never leaves me with a sore shoulder.

Im looking into the Lapua brass. It would be so nice to open a new box of factory ammo and lite everyone of them.

Any misfire?

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Called Savage today and they told me to send it back...
im going to run some 300 grain Sierra reloads through it first, if they all fly and group good, then i wont worry about it. All my 285 grain Hornady reloads all shot great. Im convinced the Savage does not like factory ammo, at least mine doesn't.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I only had issues with the Hornady. It shot great just sticks in the gun. I am going to shoot the 300 HSM tomorrow. I will let you know how it does.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Bought the RCBS bullet extraction tool and collet for the press, unloaded all the HSM ammo, got to the Hornady, pulled 2 bullets out, the powder does not want to come out, any idea's?
HSM has very small powder and it ran out, the Hornady looks like the H1000....

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I had the extraction problem with my 110

The case length was my problem

Savage chambers run tight and the Sierra book said the case length should be 2.724

That will stick all day long

2.714" was the trick

They sent me a pre-paid UPS shipping label, ask for one.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I doubt since I had work done on mine they probably will not touch it now, but will give them a call. I will check my case lengths as well.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Here was my set up I used for testing.

Older Savage J Series 112v. New barrel chambered in .338 Lapua (navy match reamer). Primers where mostly Federal. Powder? Two different types. N165 and H1000. Brass used was Lapua and mostly Hornady. Bullets used where 250gr Hornady match and 300gr Bergers and for factory loads fired where Swiss Ruag 250gr and 300gr. ammo.

No extraction problems or ignition problems with anything.

Some of the loads I tested where really hot. With the 250gr. Hornady's the hottest load I shot was like 98.0gr. of H1000 (don't recommend the load) the bolt lifted hard but didn't need to be beaten open and the cases extracted and ejected fine out of the gun etc....and this was with Hornady brass.

Just my two cents.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Just reloaded some 300 grain HSM, i set the OAL to 3.625" like the 285 grain i reloaded last time. The book calls for max 3.680" max. I did not measure the factory HSM 300's OAL like i should have.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Rob, can you measure a couple of your 300 HSM and tell me the OAL please.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Has anyone tried using nosler brass? I just bought a box of that brass after having the problems with hornadry ammo.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I have the same issues with Hornady in my 110BA a touch of lube on the case neck before I load them in the mag and there are no issues.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Yes I will. I will have to do it tomorrow, I left my mic at work today. I did measure my case length earlier today at the range and the Hornadys are 2.724 and the HSM in 250 and 300 have a 2.716 case length. I only got a chance to shoot one of each 250 and 300 before I got a call from home and had to leave. So I have no other data to share at the moment. I will shoot again on Sunday comparing the two.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I know one of the guys I shoot with swears by Nosler and Lapua brass.

OAL is 3.680 on all of them. I checked 2 different boxes and are all spot on.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

I'm just gonna throw my two cents in...

I've been reading up as much as I can on the 110 BA's (I own one as well) and any reloading tips anyone has. It seems to be a pretty consistant problem with the Hornady brass.

I, myself, went straight to Lapua brass, no issues at all. I've also used Nosler brass and it seems to perform on par with the Lapua.

I primarily shoot Berger 300's... They perform exceptionally out of my 110 BA. H1000 is my powder of choice and I use CCI 250Mag primers.

Trim to 2.714". Neck size and then use the body die every 3 firings.

Also, I have about 350 rounds through this unit.

Re: 338 lapua savage help needed

Know it's been awhile and this is an older thread, but after jumping through a few hoops with Savage, and a brief delay by a motorcycle accident, finally got the 110ba in to them for a Warranty claim.

Got it back Friday, haven't been able to get to the range to fully test it, but from what the receipt stated it was a throat polish and burr removal on mine.

I've got some Hornady leftover that I'll be testing with, figure since that round was reliably jamming up, if it works on the first shot I should be good to go. And if not, still think I have a few rounds of the Prvi and Lapua somewhere.
