Looking for advise from any 6.5 shooters (260 rem to be exact but any 6.5 will do) on experience with matchking 140s vs. hornady match 140s vs. nosler custom competition 140s.

I am staying with the 140 after testing with the sierra matchkings with a five round build group of .255. I shoot out to 1k and am hoping to find something easier on my wallet that will stay consistant out that far.
I have used the nosler custom competition in my 300 win mag (190gr) with good success but really stuck with them for the price and availability. Now I'm reading a lot of bad weights with their 6.5 line. Any truth to that?
Also, the hornaday 140 match hpbt look too good to be true (which usually is) cheap & available.

Am I wasting my time looking for backup replacements when I run out of sierra's? Just looking to not waste my time and money on a couple hundred rounds of each.
I am looking for experience, I realize "every rifle is different" and "see what works in your stick the best".

ps. always looking for 260 brass or any of the above mentioned bullets.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I switched from 142 SMKs to 140 AMAX. Cheaper and gave me the same performance out to 1k as the 142 SMKs did.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

So why do you prefer the 140 SMk over the 142 SMK?

Have you given the 139 scenars a try? I need to work up some loads on a 260, and so far I have the 140 a-max ordered, the 142 SMKs, and the 139 scenars.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I've tried sierra 123, 140 and 142. The 140's stabilize the best for me. surgeon 591 with a 26" bartlien.
As far as the scenars, I have not. Since they are $14 more per hundred than the sierras it brings a moot point in relaxing my wallet. I also like to buy everything in bulk for the batch likeness. Lapua is $450/1000 and the sierra are $270/1000. Vs. $220/1000 for the nosler cc's or $200/1000 of the hornady match.
I haven't tried the amax in 6.5 but they have never worked well for me at long range 500+ in .30. I do use them in my ar for the expansion.

A bunch of the NorCal .260 shooters use the 139 Scenars. We had some guys try out the 140 Amax and didn't see a significant change. Just a bit more elevation at 1k. Hornady is cheaper and seemingly more available. The only drawback I have found so far is they only come in 100 ct boxes instead of 500 ct

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

same with their match ammo. it is a lot cheaper but weighing them all and sorting them from buying ten boxes vs. a 1k or 500 box with the same lot # is sometimes more work than its worth. I always weight a random even in the bulk packs.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

We've tried about all of them, I feel the new Hornady 140gr BTHP match is the best kept secret out there. Glad to see no one else uses them which makes it easier for us to get them. They shoot great in both our 15" long range pistols and both Savage rifles in 260 at our 1000 yard matches.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I've tried most of the above (.260 Rem) and finally settled on 140 SMK's. Yes they don't have the best numbers of the 140 bullets but in my rifle they are accurate and consistent out to 1200 yards, I'm not even pushing them all that fast.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

Thought of the 139 Lapua Scenars?

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I shoot the 139gr Lapua Scenar out of my 6.5 Creedmoors and they are a beautiful bullet. I got 1200 of them in a trade that favored me. They shoot fantastic but I won't be buying more of them when these run out unless I can find another sweetheart of a deal. Not when the less expensive Amax can hang with them.

Where do you buy Nosler for $220/1000 and the Hornady for 200/1000? Those are good prices

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I have shot the 142 SMK, 140 amax, 140 HPBT Hornday. 140 amax shoots the best, but I did have great results with all 3. The 140 HPBT have pointed tips and at 665 I found my vertical was slightly less than the SMK. They are a great bullet and especially for the money.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I use the 142 SMK in my 6.5x284 and the 140 AMax in my 6.5 Creedmoor. Both shoot equally well out to 1000 yds. Amax is cheaper, but I do find a bit mnore weigh variance in them as well.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

Im looking to do some load development on a 6.5 creedmoor. i have a 1:8 trist and im wondering what the lightest bullets it will stabilize are. any experience would be fantastic

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I'm sure you can make the 85 Berger, 95 V-max shoot very well out of the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Re: 6.5 Sierra 140mk vs. hornady 140 match vs. nosler

I shoot more A-Max's followed by Berger, followed by SMK's.
Part of it depends what I have in stock, and sometimes it depends if it is a combo rig. If hunting, then Berger's and A-Max's will be my top choices. I have also used Smackies for hunting with good success but lean toward A-max's and Berger hunting bullets when considering multiple uses of the gun.
