Maggie’s Lab Puppy

My Yellow Lab puppy has gotta go. He is 9 months old, and weighs about 50 lbs. A furry ball of energy, and a hell of a swimmer. Eats anything. Loves children. That's one of the problems. I have five grandkids age 4 to 6, and they are deathly afraid of him. One of them goes into a blind panic when he is near.
He chews up anything that doesn't move, and has ripped all the foam out of my 4 wheeler seat. Dug up my Jap maple that I was nursing back to health, roots and all.
He is not gun shy, and fetches pretty well.
Anybody near Dallas Ga interested?

Any special reason why the kids are afraid of the puppy? Normally kids tend to get along really well with Labs due to the overall being friendly thing. My last dog was a lab and I think every kid that we met around the neighbourhood wanted to pet him, even the pretty young ones.

Their Mother had a bad experience with a dog as a child, and she has instilled in her kids an unreasoning fear. The dog is not vicious in any way. He is more the wide eyed tongue wagging Odie type.

Keep the pup but find him or her a job. I.E Field work. I have shown dogs for years and the analogy that a board lab will eat the house is true. Nose Works, Agility, Field Trials. Anything, the more you start working with the dog, the better behavior your going to get. When it starts behaving, start with the kids, you got to get that shit out of them fast! Im sorry that their mom had a bad experience with a dog, but crap like that needs to be quelled. When and if you get the pup into a sport, have the kids help, teach them that there is no "Kugo" out there. Don't blame the dog for being board!

Labs will destroy most everything they can chew or dig up for the first 2 or so years. Puppy brains. Then the day will come at about 2-1/2 years that they near overnight totally mellow out. After their puppy brain stage they are usually excellent dogs around little kids. I've had many pure breds over the years for bird hunting and always have kept them kenneled up in my yard especially when they are young. Actually I keep them kenneled up most all the time except when I've taken them out to hunt.

Use that energy to teach positive behaviors. It is called drive. Use that to shape behaviors. Enroll in an obedience class. A dog like a child can not be expected to leave the womb and have shit figured out. Good Luck.

Man i would love to help you, I love my lab like a child. Grandson loves his 'puppydog" who is 3 and weighs 100 lbs. I cannot get to where you are though any time soon. I would be willing to give him a home, fenced acre with a swimming pool if you get down to Jacksonville, FL area.

I've had Labs in the past, but they were mature when I got them.
Gunner was a baby, and I understand his puppy ways, but I am too old and impatient to put up with them.
I miss him already, but I am glad he has a new home.

+1 on keeping a lab occupied. They are exteemly intelegent & like a child with ADD, must be kept busy.
Good to hear you found a new home.
I live over in Marietta, not too far.

We had to put down our black lab about a month ago.
He had a tumor on his pericardium causing congestive heart failure. had him for over 9 years.
Unfortunately it's a bit too soon to fill the void.
Drake wasn't much of a hunter, not gun shy though. Great house dog. Earned his keep by running off some would-be theives a couple of years ago (although my neighbor was cleaned out).

Sounds like a good hunting dog to me. You have to keep them busy. I see a lot of folks buy Labs and the owners are just not as active. When they get a Lab and it reaches about the same age yours is, the owners end up pulling their hair out because they can't control the dog. It is not the dog's fault, it is the owner.

Depending on how much attention the dog does get, it may be that he is doing this to get attention. Bad attention is better than no attention at all. Pay attention to him and wear his butt out. Oh, and give him chew toys that are acceptable to chew on. One other thing, Labs do not like to be left alone. They want to be around the family all the time.

I train a lot of owners and their labs and if I had room I would take him off your hands.

Try to get him to a good training school, one they stay at for a bit. I had a lab about 15 years ago and he was hyper and destructive, but he snapped into shape with a little training. I have a shepherd now and she was a pain in the ass so we took her to training again and she's basically a very mature 11 month old now. Its real weird, even my friends were like wtf is that the same dog

Sorry you had to give up your dog.
Working breeds need work,And if you dont give it to them they WILL find something ELSE to do ( most time's you wont like it!).
Have had cattle dogs,hounds,bird dogs,and terriers. EVERY one would learn bad habits if left alone. Hard to work out of them once they learn it. Labs can be spooky to little kids (big and wide open all day).Once they chill out you could not ask for better.

I got a report on Gunner in his new home yesterday. He's on a farm with other dogs, and a pond to swim in. The kids love him. I'm sure he will be happy there, and having the company of other dogs and the kids, he won't be so destructive.

Glad to hear he is doing good.
Labs are a dang handfull to deal with as pups. All ways looking for the next thing to play with! Super good dogs if you have the time to work with them.
Only one I have had that has been harder was my Bloodhound.
All she wants to do is WORK be it night or day!!!
She is getting older (6) so she has just now started to calm down some. Still spooks the grandkids when on the lead and tracking!
No time for play when she is working.

We have a 3rd lab. He is 4 months old and is 43lbs. One hell of a pain in the ass. But as the wife and I know, it is going to be a LONG 3-4 years till he settles down. We keep cheweys and toys out. But as we know, the lab is probably the best family dog.
