Sidearms & Scatterguns Recommendations on new Pistol

I'm in the market for a new pistol, and could use some suggestions on what models I should be looking at. I'm big into revolvers, but ready to get a nice home defense/range gun. Would prefer to get a 9mm since the gun will end up with a suppressor eventually. The 9mm should be quieter than a 45. Below is basically a list of what I'm looking for in a pistol.

Accuracy. Simple enough.

Excellent Trigger. Both in weight, travel, and re-set. I've always been big into revolvers because I couldn't deal with a stiff trigger, or one with alot of creep. If I can't shoot it accurate then I don't want it. I'd also consider an aftermarket drop in trigger.

Factory Threaded Barrel. Or readily available aftermarket threaded barrel. This pistol will end up with a suppressor. I 'm waiting on my ATF stamps on 2 suppressors now, and will buy one for this pistol soon.

Accessory Rail. I'll likely mount a light on the pistol for home defense.

Large Frame. I'm looking for a large frame pistol, with a longer overall length. This will never be a carry gun.

I really like the look of the Springfield XDM 5.25 Comp. http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/specs_9.html. And the Sig 226 http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p226-x-five-tactical.aspx

What other guns should I be looking at? I also considered some of the 9mm 1911's, but would prefer a higher mag capacity

Would appreciate any feedback. Looking mostly at new, but will considered used.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

I'm personally not a fan of Springfield's tupperwares...

I'd second the recommendation for the M&P; I have both a full-size and a compact M&P9 and both have been really great guns. The compact is my EDC. I've been pretty rough on the full-size and its been very reliable despite my rough treatment. The Sig would also be a good choice IMHO, I have a 229 in .357 Sig that I absolutely love and I'm just getting to know a Sig 1911 that I've really been enjoying so far, really nice fit and finish.

BTW: Storm Lake makes a threaded barrel for the M&P that has gotten good reviews.

Good luck in your search.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

HK USP comes to mind, although not my first choice.

Sigs are my wonderful, I have a dark elite TB in .45 and love it.

Glock 19 or 17, either one is super easy and cheap to do a threaded barrel for.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

I would suggest that you give a good look to a .45 pistol if running suppressed is a concern. The .45 round is a great round to use with a suppressor as it is naturally subsonic in standard loads and gives you a lot of delivered energy. Also the peak impulse pressures for standard .45 loads are less than those for 9mm and especially .40 S&W.

I would suggest looking at the HK45 or the HK45c (NOT the USP 45 but the newer one). They are both available with extended threaded barrels, are very accurate and come with adjustable grips.

If you did want to stay with 9mm, then I would suggest looking at the HK P30 with the optional extended barrel and have it threaded to match your suppressor.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

SA XD's are cheap and reliable, they also hold all their value. i see them selling used for new prices all the time on the local gun forums. i have had 3 myself as well as a 3rd gen glock and a few sigs. I prefer the grip on the xd to a glock. S&W M&P's are another great option esp if you wanna get into IDPA at some point

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

Sig P226 or M&P. Both are great pistols and I happen to own both. Each one unique in their own way. If wanting .45, then Sig 1911 Tac Ops with a TB. Sig makes a sweet 1911 for the money.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

My buddy has the XDM 5.25 9mm. I'm not a huge fan of plastic 9mms....but after I shot his XDM I bought an XDsc in 9mm (really...my first 9mm, my first plastic pistol). The XDM was most impressive. I believe I could run a rack of steel as fast or faster with that XDM than my tricked 1911 that I used to shoot IPSC with.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

A Glock 34 with a Lone Wolf threaded barrel meets your specs and is as good as you will find, in my opinion. 147 grain ammo will be subsonic.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

I like the Idea of a .45 if your gonna shoot sub-sonic ammo. In my humble opinion a subsonic 9mm round just does not have the penetration to stop a man unless the hit is perfect. Remember the famous FBI shootout where the cops 9mm failed to penetrate and stop the bad guy who went on to kill and wound several officers after he was hit. That was a full power 9mm round by the way. The .45 is still a bigger heavier bullet at the end of the day. Just my humble opinion not trying to start a 9mm vs. .45 war.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

i also vote for the 34 or 17L big, rail, 9mm, get you an aftermarket barrel and trigger.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

I would get the M&P or SA TRP and I own both. The M&P has a very nice form factor, which is similar to the 1911, which I shot all of the time.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

Own a XDm, next pistol will be a M&P. Once the trigger's been switched out, for the money it's hard to beat for a gun that will take a beating & be basically a throw-away gun for carry or plinking.

Haven;t tried the Storm Lake barrels suggested above, but have used their replacement barrels in a couple of XD's & they're great!

With subsonic ammo, but actually the .45 outta be easier to suppress since it already runs subsonic. Will carry MUCH more energy subsonic as well....for the same reason. 9mm is already far behind in weight and energy dumped, slowing it down hurts the only advantage it has already.

1911, simple enough.....j/k

Buddy has a new Sig P220 Elite Dark, says it's just as accurate in his hands as his Kimber. I would assume a P226 Elite Dark would fit that bill as well.

Beretta 92FS if you rip off the rear sights and install factory adjustable 3-dot sights. Mine is now very accurate.

1911 Definately! Sigs have decent triggers as well, especially the SRT.

Haven't tried the H&K LEM trigger, but for DAO, I hear it's good.

Glocks are the same pull every time, worse than 1911, but consistant.

Drop in threaded bbl 9mm/.38 Super in any 1911 that started as 9mm, drop in threaded .45 bbl easy as well. Can always upgrade to Kart or similar bbl at this time. (Or buy a Nighthawk Custom AAC and forget about it)

H&K USP tactical if they make it in 9mm. But in .45, my vote would be for the H&K 45 tactical over the USP, or save money and get the FNP Tactical in .45. Possibly drop in threaded bbl in H&K P30 in 9mm.

I would think it would be easy to drop in a Sig bbl that's longer, threaded, or both.

Beretta 92FS drop in threaded bbl assemply is $200.

Probably drop in Glock threaded bbl as well.

H&K 45 over USP there. H&K 45 has M1913 rails, USP has USP rails.

Beretta 92FSA1 has rails now.

Several Sigs do.

FNP tactical has rail.

Glock gen 3

92FS/92FSA1, H&K 45, USP, P30, FNP Tactical, Sigs all fit the bill. Glock 21(.45) has a larger rail, same as the 10mm Glock.

If you can swing it, look at the Wilson Combat Spec Ops Nine. Polymer frame, 1911 trigger and controls, double stack magazine 16 rds., probably drop in threaded bbl as well if you call Wilson. I don't think it gets ANY better than this for a double stack 9mm.....plus it's the cheapest Wilson Combat you can buy brand new runs ballpark $2200 or less.

Re: Recommendations on new Pistol

Glock or M&P 9mm, 40, or 45. All good guns relatively inexpensive, and fun to shoot.
