Wonder if this happened from too short of an arrow?

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

It looks like a cross bow bolt. If that is the case he is lucky thats all it went through.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Or the arrow broke from too high of poundage bow for the arrow.

No matter what...... OUCH!!

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

I remember in Chem Lab, Freshman year, a kid was putting a pipet through a stopper. He put glycerin on the pipet, but only 1/2 the way. As he pushed through the pipet, it finally hit the glycerin and and shot through the stopper... and his hand. Looked just like this.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

I'll bet he was cleaning the bow when it went off.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

It's usually from shooting old wore out/damaged arrows or too light of a spine with too much speed/energy/poundage from the bow.

Here is another example

I thought I saw a field point on there but it does look broken.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

The carbon fiber shards are making me cringe. That looks like a bad day.

I thought bow hunting was safer than the blaster games.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Seen a guy at the Wittington center shoot his sons arrow by accident. Just at the end of his draw he realized the arrow fell back off the rest and panicked. Shot right through his hand to the horror of his son.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

A couple of buddies in college decided to go bow fishing for gar one afternoon. A little bit of rain came on them but that didn't stop the fun. They were using a 14' aluminum john boat with a raised platform on the front. Both were shooting (one on the platform and the other in the boat). Well the lower guy slipped when he drew his bow one time and ended up shooting the other guy in the abdomen. Luckily (really miraculously) the arrow went in his left side, stayed next to the skin, and was poking at the skin on the other side. You could see the arrow under the skin on his stomach. There was no permanent or serious damage to any of his organs.

The best part about it is that he took a picture of himself in the ER waiting room (post pain killers) with his arm around the guy that shot him and the arrow sticking out the other side and a big ass smile on his face. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

We ran on an EMS call several years ago where a kid had an arrow stuck through his forearm. He had drawn the bow back and the arrow came off the rest and he couldn't hold the draw weight and it went right through his arm. We ended up cutting the protruding ends off in the ER for the Doc and then they removed it after xrays. It really wasn't that gruesome and actually didn't bleed as much as I figured it would have.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

If these are too gruesome I can remove them
I was called in the middle of the night to take care of this shotgun blast to the hand. The hand was right over barrel.

Eddie, that's the funniest comment I've seen in a long time!

As far as the shots, any chance they may have overdrawn the bow and released on their support hand? Looks like a couple different hands with injuries to the same location.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Just a thought, but the thread title could have used a *GORE* or *GRAPHIC* tag.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Excellent decision for the ShotGun hand.Ray resections work great..much better than trying to salvage ...mung.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

You mean my hand isn't the best thing to use as a shotgun plug? Damn I've been doing it wrong the whole time.

Thanks....I should also post the x-rays and the intra-op debridement. Treatment was based on the paper by William White - Why i hate the index finger. Index metacarpal bone completely missing, FDP/FDS zone #3 untidy and shortened laceration, intrinsics lacerated, zone 5/6 EDC/EIP laceration. interestingly RD and UD neurovasc bundles intact.

I have a buddy who has that same finger missing due to a mishap with a saw at his former job. He always says, "high four!" Good times.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Had I friend of mine shoot his hand with his shotty a few weeks back. He was patterening his shotty for turkey season when the chock tube fell out. He tried to reinstall it without reloading and the gun fired somehow. He lost his middle/ring/and pinky.

Does that mean when something touches the back of his hand it still feels like its touching the index finger he no longer has?

That is exactly correct. It takes a few months to retrain the brain to get used to the new sensation.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Would love to see how this turned out.
It is not how I would have taken care of this injury.

Will his fingernail grow from the back of his hand or did that part get lanced? How gross would be it be to have to trim a nail growing out of the back of your hand.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Ill post a pic of mine tomorrow. When I was 14 a friend of mine shot me in the hand with a .380hp

Are you sure he was really your friend?

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

No. The nail plate grows from the nail matrix which is about 4-5mm under the skin and it is only dorsal. the flap that I took was a fillet keeping only the palmer skin and neurovascular bundles.

So i'm curious, was there just too much damage to the index fingers' medicarpal bone to save the finger?
The distal, middle and proximal phalanges look somewhat intact. I'm not a doctor, just a google god.

Anyone got any more mishaps? This is interesting.

Ya, I know. He remains a good friend to me. It honesty hurt him more than me. Over the years he has had to deal with that level of guilt and shame. My pain was over after a month or so. Both of us to this day teach firearm safety for free to anyone who asks.

Re: Shooting an Arrow Through the Hand

Im not sure if your friend is qualified to be teaching firearms safety if he shot your with a 380....... but that's just me.

That might be a valid point if he shot me a few years ago... It was still the 80s since then both of us have dedicated ourselves to mastering firearms. Trust me I wouldnt still be friends with anyone from that long ago if they were a dumbass, let alone a guy who put a bullet in me. Any ND is stupid, and there is no tollerance for that type of mistake but there is redemption.
