Sidearms & Scatterguns When do you carry?

Re: When do you carry?

I carry every day unchambered because I train that way. I draw the front, side and back, IWB and outstand. Everytime I train drawing from all 5 positions unchambered I "power stroke" ie: rack the slide and fire a controled pair or failure drill. It only take me 2 to 3 seconds to draw, rack, fire and hit the target.

Re: When do you carry?

This kind of plays into the argument that answers "what's the best gun" question.

The best gun is the one you have on you when you need it.

It's next to impossible for me to carry at all times. But I always have a good kit in my car, which has thankfully never needed to be deployed. Came close once, but I decided against it and handled the situation without it.

If I can't have a pistol on me, I have a knife to be sure. That's why I just recently picked up the Spartan Blades CQB Tool. Instant deployment of a nasty little blade that can take a single threat pretty effectively. It is one with my every day.

Yes.
Get used to carrying and it becomes just another part of you.

Re: When do you carry?

OK, OK, I knew what I was getting into when I opened this thread. But dang some of these responses are way way over the top. Only made it thru page 1 and then jumped to page 6. Couldn't take much more.

I'll play the part of the wacky loony here (note sarcasm). I have a permit and rarely carry. When I do it's a .22lr cause that's the only appropriate sized gun I have and I refuse to spend money for a dedicated CC gun. Yes, many times I have that .22 or sometimes a different gun in the car/truck/van when I leave but that's as far as it goes 90% of the time. I ain't gonna die today, tomorrow or the next due to lack of armament. I don't need a gun within arms reach when I'm in the shower. I don't have roll cages, 5 point harness' or helmets in my daily driver yet I do wear a seat belt. There's a happy medium somewhere and many crossed over that a long time back.

Not that I'd suggest it, but don't be surprised if someone turns you into a piñata for this response.

Re: When do you carry?

I carry wherever I legally can. So...anytime I'm out of the house but not headed to my office (carry prohibited there) or any place like a court building.

On my property...absolutely. We have cougars, coyotes, bears in the woods behind my place. Oddly enough, the coyotes are the most dangerous, they form packs and they have no fear nor respect of humans. The bears just pretty much keep to themselves, the cougars are hunting deer.

Outside of my house, well, I figure if I'm going to carry, I should do it all of the time. I can't predict if something bad is going to happen, so if I'm going to carry at all, then I should carry all the time.

Re: When do you carry?

im tellin ya, a good derringer stuffed in my asshole is the perfect carry setup. I have it in the shower, i have it at work, i have it at the bank, i even have it during sexy time. You just never know when your knocking the bottom out of a piece of strange if she is gonna try and rob you or harm you, and BAM you turn around and get on all fours and SHE is the one needing to defend herself. Just a piece of advice though, dont forget its there, this one time there was this especially freaky one nighter that wanted to strap one on and peg me, well she is missing a thumb now.............

Veej is too modest. He'd never carry anything so insubstantial, and besides that, how would he get any traction?

Think I'm gonna go up-armor my truck and sand bag my house now.

Congratulations on being from the future sent back in time to troll a forum populated by professional and enthusiast shooters about how you don't need precautions and why they're over the top for being prepared for life changing/ending low-probability high-impact events as an offshoot of either official training or as a compliment to their interest in shooting.

You clearly know how things turn out for you. Enjoy not defending yourself wih your .22.

Re: When do you carry?

We're too funny taking a thread/question about "when do you carry" and turning it into a "if you don't have a gun within inches of your hand 27/7/365 you are a fool" thread. Doing it with zero rational and catch phrases like "you wear a seat belt don't you" which is a so limited comparison as to be irrelevant to the subject matter at hand.

I've been a 2nd amendment and CC supporter for a dang long time (since before many of you were born) and will continue to do so till the day they stick me in an oven. If you "want" to carry go ahead, I'm all for it. But the impending doom crap is over the top. When you take the giant leap from "want" to "you're gonna die if I don't" you stepped over any rational decision long ago.

Step back, take a breath and realize that in the U.S. you're odds of surviving a day, a year or your entire life with a gun on you 24/7 aren't much, if any better than if you never have one. In many cases (depending on location and how much of a dumbass you are) not even enough difference stand up and take note.

Re: When do you carry?

my advice fills that void between the "everyday all day" train of thought and the "i only take it when i think im going to scary places" thinking. I mean once its cornholed its there, indefinatley, fist and forget kindof thing. if you wanna go jogging its right behind you, if you wanna sunbath nekkid, its there, yet out of sight out of mind.

You seem to have made up your mind that carrying everyday is insane but that carrying when you anticipate going somewhere dangerous isn't.

If you've made up your mind...then just keep quiet and go spend some time posting in Maggies. Otherwise, if you have a valid reason/point/argument that doesn't involve you just generally disagreeing with people, then make it in a well thought out and concise manner.

I believe that if I'm going to carry a gun, I should carry it whenever reasonably possible (note the word reasonable...if I'm skydiving naked, I won't have a gun on me). I will carry whenever reasonably possible because I know that I cannot anticipate any bad action through just location or time. To me it's a matter of being prepared for the unexpected. Yeah, boyscout motto and all that..."be prepared". Same reason that I keep road flares, a medical kit, and spare tire/tools in my car. I drive thousands of miles without issue, but if there is an issue I want to be able to safely deal with it.

You seem to have the belief that you can anticipate bad action through location or time. If that's your entire logical argument, then you've made it and now you should move on. If your argument somehow extends beyond that, or if that was not what you meant to convey, then you should think through your argument appropriately and clearly state it in an understandable manner.

So, since my opinion is different from yours you think I should either a) keep my trap shut or b) leave. Hmmmm, makes a lot of sense. You obviously run the place now. I bow to you……….. You've made your point, now return to the video game forum.

I never once claimed that I could predict the future and yes bad things, potentially life changing bad things, can happen in good places to good people. But then the lottery, another potentially life changing thing, is a fools game for which I don't regularly participate. Facts are that the vast majority of LEO's who's job description is dealing with criminal element won't ever fire their gun at another person. That and that a vast, vast majority of people within these borders will never suffer from a violent crime let alone one they could of prevented with CCW. Who knows what the exact odds and differences are but do you really think the life expectancies of CC'ers is any better than non gun owners. Like I said, carry a gun if you will, I know I will when I want or feel even the slightest need, but the world does not come tumbling down if you leave it at home once in awhile. Maybe your post relayed that, I don't recall reading your post. But some of the post (too many to address individually) did not and spoke pure nonsense and gibberish.

BTW, took a break from up armoring the Ford to go get the mail. Didn't take my .22 and made it back, just barely.

Figured you all would be worried.

Re: When do you carry?

I didn't say shut your trap or leave because we disagree. I said shut your trap or leave if you aren't going to present a logical argument. Snippy little childish comments and jibes are not in any way beneficial to the thread. Random rantings aren't either.

More importantly, the question was posed by the OP was when do you carry. Not what do you think of when other people carry.

So it probably most likely makes sense to focus the point of this back to the OPs question.

Re: When do you carry?

When don't I carry would take me less time to list. Only place I don't is on a run with my FD. Have SOG in place that I can't carry while on FD property or on a run. Also the receiving hospitals are all posted. Other than that, I usually carry.

Re: When do you carry?

I only carry at "stand to" and "stand down" (sunrise and sunset), and of course when I go zombie killing w/ my eotech, and I define everywhere outside of my compound a "bad area" so I carry in bad areas, and when I am scared I close my eyes, and I am scared alot, so it is almost always "nightfall" to me so I carry at nightfall too

You've had a lot of good ones, but this is an instant classic, lmao.

I carry everywhere but the usual places that are posted including work and while working out.

Re: When do you carry?

I was attacked by a dog for the 6th time while the wife and I were walking our dog in my neighborhood this past weekend. This is the only time I have been biten out of the 6 issues. There were 8 people outside watching this go on and did any of them atempt to come help me out, no not a single one and they all knew who the dog belonged to. The only help I got was when the dog released his grip on my forearm, I push him away and drew my gun, the asshole who was in his driveway "minding his own" then wanted to say something about me having my gun out.........WTF

Re: When do you carry?

Wintermute boyscout motto and all that..."be prepared". Same reason that I keep road flares said:
I think it all comes down to personal preferance. I carry as often as I leave the house. I leave my Glock in the Car at work (I work at a Jail), the Bank, and campus. My wife wonders why I take it into Lowe's or the grocery store or the mall. I don't live in a Severely urban area here in MT, but I see a lot of ex-inmates around that I haven't exactly made friends with. I feel more comfortable with the ability to defend myself if the need arises, though like Wintermute I don't foresee a "Car crash" read shooting incident happening to me. But preperation doesn't hurt anyone.

Re: When do you carry?

I carry EVERYWHERE. No Im not paranoid but in a society like today's it would bother me more if something happened that negatively effects my loved ones and I was not able to do anything about it.

I'm recently married and I hopefully will be a father soon. I feel it's my duty as both of those to make sure I do everything I can to keep them safe.

If you knew you would be fighting for your life tomorrow, would you change how you train today?

Re: When do you carry?

All day everyday, so long as I'm not in a no carry zone... i.e. court house, anywhere with a 30.06 sign posted, etc

Train like you fight, then fight how you trained.

Keep your powder dry,

Same here. Working in a LGS, I do anyway, but even outside of there, I always have a carry gun on me.

Re: When do you carry?

I Carry all the time. I look at things this way. Every victim of a violent crime would have done things differently that day if they had known what was coming their way.You don't know when things can go horribly wrong for you or your family.
