Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

I've got a Rem 700 5r on the way to me & I'm also building an AR-10 .308. I got some Federal Match 168 & 175 gr. & some 175gr. ammo on the SW group buy (Haven't received it yet}. Is there any inexpensive ammo for just shooting blocks of ice, targets where accuracy isn't important, etc.? Although I'm probably on the wrong forum to ask this type of question when MOA's are measured in .10's ? Thanks! ; ) Bill

Blocks of ice as targets?

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

Unfortunately cheaper than dirt is sold out of A LOT of .308 right now. That's where I usually buy mine. They need to restock already, its been this way for nearly a month

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

Invest in reloading equipment and shoot quality loads of your own making for the price you pay for factory ball ammo.

'Plinking'

I dunno that I would shoot .308 for plinking as it's a pretty expensive way to plink. But if you insist pick up a reloading set-up.

You might consider picking up a .223/.22 bolt action for cheaper plinking.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

Cheapest .308 ammo I've seen is the Silver Bear, Wolf, Tula varieties.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

If you're shooting 300 yards though is it alright to reload or should I keep using good ammo? I shoot 300+yards and yes .308 is expensive.

I get Privi Partisan 165 and 175, 500 rounds for $275 at www.targetsportsusa.com. Looks like they're out of the 165 though. I actually like it because its a pretty accurate round relative to the higher priced Sierra Match Kings, Hornady and others. I agree with Wolf and Tulammo being closer to plinking but I just can't bring myself to putting that shit in my bolt gun. I've had 2 .223 Wolf ammo casings rupture in my AR-15 but since it wasn't through a match grade barrel I didn't mind, I didn't think it was that cool considering there was a little grenade exploding a few inches from my face, but needless to say I didn't mind.

ABSOLUTELY NOT, you cannot shoot reloads at 300yds. Exactly wtf are you asking here?

In my experiences, my handloaded ammo is good ammo. Better than factory for me.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

I think my question was quite clear, but your answer isn't clear whether its sarcasm or not.

wfjames, not sure what you're saying here but shooting reloaded ammo at 300 is no problem but I do agree that handloads are far better than factory loads.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

So in conclusion, on a serious note, for long range shooting, should I buy a reload kit?

How is your question clear? Is it alright to shoot reloads at 300yds? I guess I am just ignorant, but I dont see how this is even a valid question.

Well it was sarcastic, of course. Why would you think that you couldnt shoot reloads (or handloads) at 300yds?

If you are serious about shooting (especially @ longer ranges), I cannot think of any reason not to load your own ammo. Its cheaper and you get better performing ammo, in my experience.

I started with the basic $300 Rock Chucker kit and have since spent a good couple of thousand on components so be careful, it's addicting.

If you are looking to shrink down your grouping. Reloading would be the way to go. Match bullets , good brass isn't cheap though.

But if you are just loading plinking ammo you can save quite a bit from buying factory ammo.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

If plinking is your goal, a 22 is your answer.

Why waste your centerfire rifle's bore life shooting substandard ammo?

Yeah, me too, I don't get the apparent drive for inaccuracy. .22LR goes *plink* (or *plunk* depending upon from whence thou hither) quite nicely and for tons less.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

I would recommend reloading. The thought of shooting substandard ammo (no matter how inexpensive it is) seems like an aggravating waste of time to me.

Blocks of ice are a lot of fun. They don't explode as dramatically as tannerite, but are usually impressive. In bright sun, you can get instant rainbows. Then you get increasingly smaller targets, also.

Re: Inexpensive 'plunking' ammo for my .308?

Thanks for all the replies! ; )... I ending up getting some Prvi Partizan 165 gr. from Aim for $9.95 a box. Right after I bought mine their site showed 'out of stock', so I guess I lucked out! I wanted the least expensive I could get w/out damaging my guns. I wasn't sure if Wolf/Tulammo, etc. was any good or not. I also plan on getting a .308 pistol just for fun & certainly don't need match ammo for that. At some point I will get into reloading but don't really have the space now... Thanks again! ; ) Bill
