I haven't been to armorers school. But you are a mechanically oriented person you can basically learn how to build a rifle on youtube. Building a complete rifle isn't hard at all. The pain is getting all the pin punches, vise blocks and m16 armorers wrench. Just a thought. Brownells and other companies actually publish free web videos to support their sales.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I need an actual certification for my job. Boss is leaving it up to me to choose the school. There are several out there. Figured I'd check to see if anyone has some first hand experience. Appreciate the response.

I took the Armalite AR-15 school for my job. I can't remember how many hours it was ( I don't have access to my certificate right now). It seemed to be a good class.
You could give them a call. They were putting it on in several locations around the Country.

Mine was through Defensive Edge. I did the 2 day course and we took everything apart that can come apart and then put it all back together again.

Instructor was Greg "Sully" Sullivan. He was great and knew his stuff very well and could teach it too. My certification is good for 3 years and when it expires I'm going to try and take the more advanced course where they ream chambers and such going into part modification not just repair/ replacement. The 2 Day was all of 2 days and full of info geared especially to Law Enforcement Armourer but the advanced sounds like just a little bit more.

Then take the Colt Armorer's course.
SAW would be my next recommendation.

What JMC said. Sully knows his stuff and is an excellent teacher. Guys that have been to more than one class told me that his is better than the Colt class and several others offered by LEO training facilities around us. I have only been to his, so I can't personally compare it to others. Id contact him and see if he will set something up in your area. I think he's booked well in advance, and busy with many other things, so don't delay if you are interested in his services.

I took the Colt class in 06 when I worked for Dept of State. Out of all the formal classes I had to attend it was pretty good. FN was prolly the best.

I attended the Basic SAW course. Covers assembly and disassembly of everything but taking off the barrel. Very little in the way of troubleshooting. He also offers an advanced class that covers those. Ken Elmore is very knowledgeable but his presentation can be a turn off for some. You will hear that every gun made but Colt and his are junk and he likes to talk about himself alot. If that bothers you, you may want to look elsewhere. If you can find one that covers more troubleshooting and barrel install in one class that may serve your needs better. Overall it is a very good class and I enjoyed it.

You are instructed in everything from sights to changing out a barrel and perform hands on work building and taking an AR apart.

Thanks guys. I knew there was a reason I joined this forum. I truly value all of your opinions. I was looking at Defensive Edge and WSTC but without some independent confirmation they are just another internet site. You all have helped a great deal.

I also attended the WSTC course - you will take a box of pieces and build an AR15 pin by pin and disassemble - several times. You will leave the course knowing how to build an AR, replace any part, and have the ability to analyze failures. The documentation is excellent.

I also attended the WSTC course - you will take a box of pieces and build an AR15 pin by pin and disassemble - several times. You will leave the course knowing how to build an AR, replace any part, and have the ability to analyze failures. The documentation is excellent.

Bushmaster's new armorer's course is top notch. It is totally revamped from when Izzy was doing them, and covers every single aspect of the AR and is 100% hands on. Not only do you learn the parts, but from a LE standpoint, you go over inspection procedures for every indiviual part and learn identifying problems instead of just swapping parts until you get the right one. Not a lot of history and 'theory' straight to getting it done.
