Still hammering with 1500 rounds down the tube...

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

NICE shooting, & that looks like a great place to shoot! I haven't seen those pod feet advertised. It look like gloves or socks to keep the legs from disappearing into the loose gravel? Whatever it takes...necessity is the mother of invention, right?

How many mils @ 700 yards- about 5 ?

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Very nice Pat as per usuall. With all this 260 talk, ya'll are going to make me build one before it's over.

I also hear that 42.0 to 43.5 grains of H4350 works with the 139 Scenars.............as per your target

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

That's real good shooting Pat...good to hear the round count as there is always the discussion about barrel life.

Hoping to have my 7-08 up and running pretty soon, maybe I'll make it out to shoot with you after all.

26" Schneider 1-8". I get 2850fps with that load. I'm working up a 130gr VLD load right now and trying for 3000fps......heading out to the hills to try some at distance..in close looks good. Velocity was 2990fps on these five.

do you think a 24 inch barrel would be sacrificing too much velocity? thanks

Just got back from the hills and happy.....I really like the 130gr Berger.

I went to a place just a few miles from the house where I could only shoot to 560M on my plate without having to carry it farther. I did check my run-ups from 800M(5.3), out to 1040 meters(8.6 mils) on a few rocks.FWIW, I use a 160M zero....

In comparing the 130 VLD to the 139 scenar, I need 6.0 mils at 800M and 9.6 at 1040M. 150fps faster with only a marginal sacrifice in bc, for me is the better choice...

yup..yup !

got 4 or 5 sets of 1/2"

one set of 5/8"

and a new steel that you are gonna like. Special made for you and me.. GRIN

Might have to share though... hahahaaha

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Looking good! I think that says more about you as a reloader, and a shooter then it does the gun. Being able to fine tune that thing.

Also! Don't be giving out the Schneider barrel secret. I like the lead times. We don't wont everyone jumping on the band wangon:)

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Quite the rig you got there Pat...maybe I'll get some pointers on how to shoot like that come April.

No.....you'd be fine with a 24" barrel. I run that length on my lightweight .260 and get 3000fps with 130's.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

wow... after 1500 rds, did you ever have to increase your OAL??? I had some throat erosion after 1K on mine and had to seat em out .030 to get em up the lands once again, now I'm @ mag length... Great shooting BTW, what a tack driver.

Every one of these .260 threads makes the anticipation of getting mine running that much stronger. I can't wait for the brown truck to drop off Mr. Roscoe's product.

hey me too....he has my parts for a .260 build also. i'm on the beginning of my wait though but it will be worth it after having used a couple of his rifles from my buddy.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Hey Pat,

Just trying to follow along, NICE shooting BTW.

First steel target was 139 with 42.5gr H4350 and the speed was what?

Your target with 139 shows 42.0gr of H4381 and you're getting 2850fps? Is that correct? that seems VERY fast for that low charge of H4381.

You posts are very informative. Thanks.

Good eye! Total misprint on my part. That should be H4350 instead of H4831. H4350 is all I've ever used in both .260's.

I reduce my loads a tad in warmer weather. It gets really cold here in the winter and very hot in the summer. You'll notice on the first steel plate shot with 139's, that the POI is .1 high at 712M due to it being warmer.

Sorry for the confusion!

One thing that worked out kind of sweet was with both loads(139's and 130's) I don't have to re-zero the scope. I can run both range cards without doing anything. My next test will be a head to head 139 scenar VS 130 VLD in a good cross wind.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Got to shoot my new to me gap 260 this week as well. Really likening it. 42.5 of 4350 and the 142smk was making the steel sing!

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Thats an awesome rig, no doubt. I've got your twin, after reading this I think gonna try the 130 VLD's. Thanks for all the info

Thanks for clearing that up, I assumed that was what happened. It's interesting that there's no need to re-zero for those 2 bullets. Is this why your zero is 160 meters?

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

I shoot a Kreiger barreled 260 with a round count approching 3K. The first 1700 included a lot of F-Class matches. At 1700 I had the barrel set back. It takes 1.5 grains more powder to get the same velocity, but it still shoots sub 1/2 MOA.

Pat you have a lot of good left in your barrel.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Pat,

Do you mind sharing your COAL for the 130 VLDs? Are you seating the VLDs in the rifling or letting them jump?

From what I have read they can be picky when it comes to COAL and jump.

I ask because my 260 build is almost complete and I have a box of VLDs to test.

Thank you in advance.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Base to ogive is: 2.135"
COAL is: 2.845"

10 thou. jump. for the rifle above.

I have another .260 built by GA Precision that is a lightweight mountain rifle, chamber was cut with the same reamer as the Crusader. The barrel is a 24" #3 Rock 5R. That rifle likes to jump the same 130gr VLD's 45 thou.....go figure. I also need another 1.3grs of H4350 to get the same velocity as the 26" Schneider(3000fps).

MTWolf005.jpg

My lightweight GAP .260. Every bit as accurate as the Crusader, just a little harder to master....

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

PGS, you say you're getting 3,000 fps with 130's out of 24-26" barrels in bolt guns. What do you think someone would be looking at in terms of velocity with a 26" Krieger AR-10 style rifle in .260 shooting 130 or 140 grain pills?

I'm in the military, stationed 2,000 mi from "home" unfortunately, but I have all of the parts for my .260 collecting dust at my parents' place. I've never messed with the .260 before, but from what I've researched on hodgdon's website I was expecting more along the lines of 2700-2750 fps with 140 grainers, and maybe 2800 or a little more with 130's. Unfortunately my reloading manual is also at home, so hodgdons is my only source. I intend to use Lapua or Hornady brass and H4350 or H4831, which ever gives the best accuracy/velocity. Oh and Berger VLD's, I'm leaning towards 140 grain.

Excellent shooting by the way, I'm very envious-- I've wanted to live in Montana since I was child. Some day.

Re: GAP Crusader .260 @ 700M

Thanks for your service! I hope you make it to Montana someday.

I'll be finding out the answer to to your question soon. A friend just stopped by a few days ago and dropped off a LMT MT .260 with a 20" 1-9" barrel. I'll be working up loads as soon as the brass for it shows up. I'll start with 123gr scenars, then try some 130 VLD's and H4350.

There are lots of guys in here with WAY more experience than me with AR rifles in .260. Maybe some of them will contribute....

nice hearing that the bergers don't mind a jump. i may have to try that for hunting. i'm going shoot 139 scenars and would like to work up a hunting load with the bergers, have you looked at the 140's or plan to?

Did you ever compare the 130s to the 139s in the wind side by side? Are you still liking the 130s best?

Pat, thanks for sharing your success! Do you think a 22" barrel could hit 2,900 with the 130 VLD?

It will with 45.2 grains of H4350 in a Lapua case.
