Nightforce scope on DPMS LR-308...mounting questio

Gents,

I am ordering a NF NXS 5.5x22x50 scope for my DPMS LR 308, with a HIGH upper receiver.

My rifle looks pretty much like this, although a bit modified since I have added a PRS stock

After reading various posts and looking at the specs on the scope I have determined that I need a scope mount that is more than 33mm= 1.309 in. tall. This is the height required to allow the ocular piece to be above the upper receiver rail and not touch it. The objective should not be a problem with the high receiver and the FF tube.

1. are my assumptions correct??

2. how far forward do you guys typically mount a NF scope on the DPMS/ AR 10 guns?? can you post a picture??

3. what mounts would you recommend?? a unimount or just a pair of rings???

4. should I consider a lever type mount if I go with a unimount or just stick with a regular nut type mount??

5. what brands are the best bang for the buck for this type of set up??

6. I do have a Savage that I will probably want to use the scope on, but I assume any mount that will work for the DPMS, will be too high for the Savage 10 FP???

7. if I go with a NF mount, is the level and ADI worth getting ?? or does it get in the way??

I appreciate any and all good advice, as this is a big leap for me as a newbie, upgrading from my old tasco 3x9 scope on Leeper rings..

OK first your picture doesnt work, but Im guessing you have this upper pictured below. second Im using a nightforce 8-32x56 on the low version of that upper and im using the 1.375 unimount on mine and it has room between the handguard and the scope. so if you have the high rise upper and only a 50mm scope the 1.375 would be way to high.

yea, I cant seem t get pictures to ever work for me, but if you click on it it takes you to a photo on the DPMS website. My receiver is not That high, but it is higher than yours.

Is your mount a NF mount??

Looks like your scope is about 3/4 in behind the charging handle?? Is your charging handle a standard one or modified??

Im using a Bobro for my lmt and 3x15 NF. Its just right.

I have a BCM charging handle on mine, now mine is an AR15 not an AR10 so your upper is a little longer than mine and the handguard is a little bigger I think, never really compaired it to close to my friends AR10. yes thats a nightforce unimount on mine.

BTW to get a picture to work when you see one on the net you want to link right click on the picture then click on properties, then highlight the address and Ctrl+c to copy and then Ctrl+v to paste it you have the [ img ] part right.

what do you like about it??

looking at it on line line though it appears to be Very high if its 1.575&#8243; from center of 1913 to tube center!!

my measurements assumed from center of rail to top of tube.

the nightforce unimounts specs are from the top of the mounting rail to the middle of the scope.

ahhh...same as the Bobro, then my minimum clearance calculation for my scope would be 18m=.71 in??? Since the Ocular diameter is 36 mm

its not the back of the scope you have to watch its the front hitting the handguard. Im hoping someone will chime in that has the high rise upper that can tell you for sure what fits. I just measured mine and I have just under a 1/4 inch between my handguard and the bottom of the scope, .190 between the butler creek cap and the handguard. my handguard is 1.995 round and it has the 1.375 mount on there now.

You might touch bases with Hakon Spuhr (he is a member here). His mounts are fabulous and offer some height choices. I've got the same scope on a Baer Monolith (I realize that's not the same as your setup). Spuhr's mount places the bell just above the rail with about 1/4" clearance (I had to whittle a flat spot on the bikini cover so it would fit).

Where you put it on the rail will depend on your LOP, the type of stock you're using, where you put your cheek weld and so forth. I'm running a PRS stock, have long arms and shoot with my nose near the charging handle. That required me to mount the scope with the objective just above the handle

I run a IOR 4.5x14x50 on the DPMS .260 with Badger 22moa - (will have to get ring heights later) but no clearance issues.

I ran my 56mm NF on the 308 upper it didn't touch the bell but the .260 upper sits 1/4" lower so it hits the bell - that's why i ended up getting the Badger MOA base - and the extra MOA helps

thanks for the picture. Your receiver is not raised like mine is. Mine is 0.5" above the FF tube. Not sure if this makes it 0.5" higher than yours, but probably pretty damn near. Sometimes I regret getting this damn high receiver (

So.... unfortunately it does look like the Bobro would be too high on my platform...

I have the Weaver 3-15x50 (which is a BIG scope) on my LR308, and it's mounted in Weaver Medium rings. I started out with some extra high rings I had laying around, and then realized how much room was left. I think could even go to a 56mm scope. The extra height on the receiver helps a lot. The weaver rings are usually less than 40 bucks, and get the job done. I have collected a few sets in different heights, and I use 'em to gauge optimum height before I go buy an expensive mount.
