Dual optic setup?

Hey guys, first off I hope this is in the right place. I am looking to figure out my optics setup for the RRA Predator HP .308 that I am looking to buy. I was hoping to do some sort of dual setup for both long and short range. I am planning on moving one of my Zeiss scopes from one of my other rifles to this new gun, or buying a new illuminated scope (trijicon accupoint?). My real issue is what I want to run for my close range setup? I'm looking to either do some sort of an offset mount red dot, or a red dot piggybacked on top of my scope, or something else similar to that. I spoke with RRA yesterday about another question and the man that I talked to suggested a mounted laser for short range. What would y'all suggest? Thanks.

Re: Dual optic setup?

TexasAggie,

The offset mount and a red dot is the way to go..

Currently on a couple of bolt rifles (Rem 700's) I am running an off set mount and a Bushnell TRS 25. Works VERY nice. I have the red dot sighted at 25 yards... but it WILL hit 8X8 steel at 200 yards which is the furthest I have pushed the red dot..

There are a BUNCH of different red dots to use... but to keep the cost low and still have a quality optic look at the Bushnell TRS 25 and the Vortex SPARC.. Both have great reputations and both companies stand behind their products.. I know that the TRS 25 is rated to a .375 H&H round according to their ad..

Re: Dual optic setup?

I have a Vortex Sparc... Not a fan really. It's great for 22 or 9mm carbines, but anything else and I'd have to say either stick with a mini red dot, or pony up and get an aimpoint T1 or H1.

Re: Dual optic setup?

mm128 and jnz, thanks for the replies. I guess offset it is. I want a mini red dot more than a Sparc of TRS 25 style red dot. I know vortex makes the Razor red dot and have heard that it is pretty good quality. What are some other quality dots that are that style?

Re: Dual optic setup?

I am going to be using a system i bought from Jay at sportoptics. It is a warne ar tactical ramp mount and a burris fastfire reddot for the secondary and a vortex viper PST 4-16 ffp.

Re: Dual optic setup?

Awesome! Do you have any previous experience with the Burris? I want a quality dot that will hold up through a lot of use.

Re: Dual optic setup?

look into the spuhr ideal mount also, they have a little picatinny rail that you can attach to the mount like this. Works pretty good.

Re: Dual optic setup?

I have also made a mount for Aimpoint T1/H1 that goes directly on their footprint and mounts the reddot at the same distance from the barrel as the main optic.
So with this solution just rotate the gun, and look through the aimpoint.

Re: Dual optic setup?

There is ANOTHER way too IF some can NOT afford some of these mounts.

Must rings out there have an add on top cover that is a picatinny ring top... MILLET has a set of rings with a picatinny top built in...

Then purchase ANY number of OFF SET/ OFF ANGLE mounts and mount the red dot to it... it DOES give a tad better spacing soo that it is not so close to the scope ie... focus knob, or windage knob....

Normally you can add both pieces to a ring set up for less than $50.00...

I have one setup like this on a bolt .223 and it works very well.
