Here is a pic of the almost-finished threads. They recommended going .60" of threads and I actually went a little further after test fitting the knob to about .61"+ to make it look uniform with the bolt handle. If you look on the right side of the threads there is a nub of metal, after taking this picture I threaded it all the way past that nub to clean it up and it looks perfect now.

For those thinking about doing it themselves, do it!
1) Making your first cuts with a hacksaw was easy
2) Using a Dremel to clean things up was a snap. After you square it up, just grind down the corners evenly to get it rounded. No Dremel? With a bastard file you can still make quick work of it
3) Using a caliper once its rounded off, you can spin it to see which side is larger than the other, this is the side you grind more to round it out properly. I measured the front part after rotating 360 degrees and then the rear of the threads and rotated 360 degrees to give you an idea of how "round" you are. You want to be close to .31". Some of my measurements were .30" and .32".

Still working on my shooting, been doing .75" consistently and here is my best 5-shot group measuring .60" with this rifle shooting prone at 100 yards with 168 Federal Match. I'll have some better targets up soon, I need a lot of work on my own mechanics, form and habits. Two cups of coffee on the drive to the range doesn't help either..

I just had this done for $50 by a friend who owns a gun shop locally. This is exactly how he did it. He got about $50 for under an hours worth of work and it turned out just fine. I was happy but do know that it would not be too difficult with the right tools. Good post for the DIY'ers.

To anyone without any sort of eye for detail: Do not just cut the factory knob off. You need the extra length so cut it where ripcurl said to.

That's some home grown ingenuity right there. I'd never have the balls to try that. I went the easy way with a bolt on KRG knob.

5/16 die at 24 threads per inch from Harbor Freight for about $16 for the entire die and tap set. I cut the knob off on all 4 sides leaving .35" diameter thick. From here you can use a file or dremel to get it down to .31". Round the corners, measure them to get it down to .31" and then tap the rounded post you now have until you have about .6" of threads. I went a little further to about .62".

Vice
5/16 24tpi tap

just make your cuts bigger, you can always trim it down. take your time rounding it out using the caliper method i mentioned and you're g2g. ive never done this before or threaded anything. folks who are familar with it are probably laughing at how easy and basic it is, so take that for what its worth

good point!, i actually did the opposite of that and purchased a 5/16th bolt for .20 cents and traced the circumference around the end of the bolt

Good Job! My local guy charges me $125 (with the bolt knob, any style). However, I see the EGW knob I want and it's only $23. I am going to do this myself and save $100.

My smith cut the knob off. Drilled a hole into the handle and threaded the inside of the hole. Used a piece of threaded rod and cut it to size. Twisted on the knob to make sure it would fit and Loctite'd the pieces together.

That's a fine job you did with just hand tools.

FYI: Many of the M700 knobs have casting voids. Threading that portion and screwing a knob on, if you're aggressive with running the bolt or have a hard to extract case, the knob can break off. That's why many smiths drill it out and install a threaded stud.

Well, I did it! I didn't take any progress pictures but it was pretty easy.

Now I just have to touch up the Cerakote and it will be finished.

I did find a way that made it easier on me. I ground the bolt knob off and rounded the handle small enough to thread it 3/8x24. Then I filed those threads off and it was the perfect diameter for 5/16x24. I found this by accident because I had never used a die before so I wanted to "test thread" the handle once.

I'm gonna order a badger knob from midway when I get home. I have tapped an engine block on an old mustang when the bolt sheared off and put it back together no problem. I'm thinking I should be able to tackle this. I'm gonna give it a shot as soon as it comes in.

something else that i wanna try is doing the reinforcement screws so that the bolt doesnt break off where its "glued" on. ive seen some guys tig weld it and i can do that but i know what welding can do to metal so i wanna avoid that. anyone do it before with regular tools? once i do it i will take detailed pictures and post the procedure

I would think a decent tig welder shouldn't have any problem making the attachment a little more solid.

I was a little worried when I started cutting on teh 1st one I did. My plan was if I FUed it up Id send it to Monteboy and hav him put a Tac Ops knob on it. Juts take your time and it is easy. I got my die at Ace Hardware for 8 buck

I just got mine threaded and am now just waiting for the knob to come in the mail. I was wondering what is the best thing to put on the bolt for a finish after it has been filed? I have a birchwood casey bluing kit should I go with that or cerakote it or what?

Just did mine. I found that having/making a defined shoulder to stop at the end of the threads was helpful. Also - important - don't cut threads with the die all the way down to the shoulder that you created. If you do, you will round off the corner edges of the bolt handle as the oversized part of the die goes over the shoulder. Once you get close to the shoulder, turn the die around and thread the last bit with the tight side of the die and you won't round off the handle.

Last tip - try to make sure the cylinder you grind/file down to is centered on the bolt handle.

I touched up with some liquid bluing.

You'll be happy with your results - take your time!
