Looking for advice on swapping out my New 700 300WM ADL to 338Norma Mag.

Questions:

1. Who should I have do the action and barrel work. I had a 308 made by Rock Creek Barrels and I love it. Right now they are top choice unless there is a better selection.

2. What length barrel and twist rate would you recommend?

3. What contour do you all like?

4. Muzzle brake-I want one the works. Cool guy points for it looking good is always nice but I'll trade those in a heartbeat for better working brake.

5. Stocks-This thing will be used for long range shooting and maybe critter killing (watching too much Best of the West but that is a ways down my wish list).
I already have a B&C Medalist Tacticle on the 308. Thought that if the two guns were as similar as possible it would make training a little more easy. What say you?

6. Bottom metal-Do I get floor plate or do I bite the bullet and run with a removable magazine like Badger Ordinace's ?

7. Do I want a fluted bolt with a tacticle handle?

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Let me hear your thoughts.

I am at the early stage right now. I just picked up the 700 300WM ADL a couple of days ago. It hasn't even been stripped down the action. Should be a good weekend project.

Thanks,
John

Depends rock does good work I have a few of their barrels but I might look at a mag rifle builder Tom Sarver, Dave Tooley, Baitey you might want to check out the smiths who build the 1,000 yard bench rest guns.

2. What length barrel and twist rate would you recommend?

9.4 twist what do you plan to do with it (primarily) Is this going to be a bench gun, walking gun, a competition gun
3. What contour do you all like?
See answer 2

4. Muzzle break-I want one the works. Cool guy points for it looking good is always nice but I'll trade those in a heartbeat for better working break.

Fat bastard,Grizzly gun works, badger FTE and a recent discovery for me the big chubby. All make effect brakes.

5. Stocks-This thing will be used for long range shooting and maybe critter killing (watching too much Best of the West but that is a ways down my wish list).

I don’t follow the B&C medalist so someone else can chime in, the McMillan, or XLR chassis and I think Terry cross all make quality stocks

6. Bottom metal-Do I get floor plate or do I bite the bullet and run with a removable magazine like Badger Ordinace's ?

I like mag feed.

7. Do I want a fluted bolt with a tacticle handle?

I have a tactical knob and find it comes into its own when hunting in cold conditions with gloves, or when I need a little more torque on the bolt. I have a competition gun that works just fine the standard bolt…what is on your B&C tactical and how do you like it. Enough to change or stay the same.

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Let me hear your thoughts.

See answer 2
--mostly bench with long rang hunting thrown in later. Will have benches or good rests to shoot from while hunting. Not planing on packing it unless its on my four wheeler or boat.

4. Muzzle break-I want one the works. Cool guy points for it looking good is always nice but I'll trade those in a heartbeat for better working break.

---What do you like about the McMillian? My B&C works well but what am I needing from the McMilian. If there is something that it will do that the B&C won't I'm game.
6. Bottom metal-Do I get floor plate or do I bite the bullet and run with a removable magazine like Badger Ordinace's ?

I like mag feed.
---thats what I am going for.

---I have the standard bolt handle and it works well. Since I don't have much time behind others I really have to way to compare or info that would tell me I needed something different. It works, it just doesn't have the cool guy factor.

Depends on your location. If want to ship it, send it to Mark at SAC.

2. What length barrel and twist rate would you recommend?

If weight is not an issue, go with a 9.4 twist, 30" tube.

3. What contour do you all like?

A minimum of an MTU.

4. Muzzle brake-I want one the works. Cool guy points for it looking good is always nice but I'll trade those in a heartbeat for better working brake.

APA Fat Bastard. Best brake on the market IMHO.

I've had a couple B&C's (still have 2) and wish I never spent the $ on them. You need to get behind a couple different stocks. I much prefer the McMillan A5's and Manners T5A's. It is personal preference but, if you're spending the $ on a build, you might as well get what YOU want.

6. Bottom metal-Do I get floor plate or do I bite the bullet and run with a removable magazine like Badger Ordinace's ?

Depends on what you REALLY want the rifle to do. If you're just shooting 1000 yds plus, a single shot would work. If you NEED a quick follow up shot, go with a DBM. You can even feed out of an internal mag but, you'll probably be limited to 3 total rounds. Will you need more than 3 shots?

7. Do I want a fluted bolt with a tacticle handle?

I don't know, do YOU want a fluted bolt??? Only you can answer that. Do you NEED a fluted bolt? Absolutely not. The larger handle is nice though.

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Let me hear your thoughts.

Re: Building a new 338Norma Mag on a Rem 700 action.

Just got mine finished, PTG bolt, tactical knob, 28" Mcgowen Barrel, Vias break, rifle basics trigger, Ken ferrell 60 MOA base with seacan rings, and a Nightforce NXS 5.5x22x50 with a NPR 1 retical. Action was a trued mod 700 and all work was by Vestals Gunsmithing Abingdon Va.

Re: Building a new 338Norma Mag on a Rem 700 action.

My rifle is a lefty, and is kinda of a cross between longrange gun and a tactical. Weighs in at just over 12lbs and off the bench could use some more weight but I am tickled so far. Shot less than 1/2 MOA with virgin brass today at 200y.

Re: Building a new 338Norma Mag on a Rem 700 action.

Ive hit out too a 1000y with mine but do to pressure problems had some inconsistancy, hoping Im on the right track now with Retumbo, looks good so far.

Re: Building a new 338Norma Mag on a Rem 700 action.

Well im no expert but Im guessing that once you mackine out the 300WM bolt face for the 338 Norma Mag bolt face their wont be a whole lotta metal left. If you want to go 338 Norma why not build off a 338 Lapua LA build by Remmy, or better yet sell your 300 WM action and buy a Stiller TAC338 off the Group buy list. Some corners can be cut, others are not worth cutting.

I understand you want guidence and input on your rifle, but who cares what other people think about it? You should ask yourself what YOU want (fit, finish, feel ect ect) Find some 'hide members near you with custom rifles and see if you can get togeather and put a round or 5 through there gun, see how you like the chassis/action/accracy whatnot.

For what its worth the Norma (300 and 338) are extremely effecient cases. pushing "large for caliber" bullets has proven that the benefits of a long barrel tend to become minimal past 27-28" Im NOT saying you cant add inches and up the powder to prove that statement wrong, but were talking about steady, all temp moderate loads (with the heavy for caliber) bullets.

The 300WM bolt face diameter is .540 and the 338NM bolt face diameter is .588, I don't have a Remmy bolt face to measure the thickness of the rim but from what I recall removing .04 would be nominal. From what I understand Mr. Sloan intended the 338NM to be built off of existing Army M24 long action receivers. Additionally when loaded to SAAMI specs a 300WM chamber pressure is 64000 psi and Dr. Heath from Norma was kind enough to respond to a PM I sent him a while back regarding 338NM chamber pressure.

Using our brass a 2 thou case head expansion with new (unfired ) brass very closely equates to 62,000 PSI

The NM bolt face would have to be opened .04 .02 but the chamber pressure is 2000psi less than the WinMag.
