Just bought a project gun 700 remington in a 300 win mag this puppy is slightly used but has had no modifictions. Example, you need a tractor to pull the trigger. I need some suggestions not only rifle enhancements but also suggested loads.

Re: 300 win mag build

This is a good place to get info and learn from others who have more knowledge and experience. I would start with trigger improvements. You didn't say what you will be doing with this mostly.(Hunting? Competition?or just target shooting?)

Re: 300 win mag build

How new/old is this rig? Depending on the age of the trigger, a decent smith should be able to drop that weight from the standard "eleventy-billion-pound" trigger to a more respectable 2-3 pound pull. Most every rifle I have is set between 2 and 3 pounds. Does not accidentally go boom, does go boom when intended.

Loads: Tons, there is actually a reloading section on the hide, and there is even a 300sm/300wsm load page.

I use mine for hunting, and I load the 208 A-Max over 77 grains H-1000. I spent several days working up this load, you SHOULD do the same, get a loading manual, read, get another manual, read some more.

So, to help us help you, answer us some general questions:
What is the intended use?
How much time have you spent behind precision rifles?

Wally

Re: 300 win mag build

Post pictures of what you've got so we can get an idea of what you are starting with. Typically, getting a cut rifled barrel (Krieger, Bartlien, Rock, etc.) Is a good starting point. If your stock is garbage, it will need to be replaced. Otherwise, you'll need to bed you stock. Most Remington triggers can be tuned so ever if it sucks now, that doesn't mean its worthless.

What's your budget for upgrades? Can you afford to do everything at once or is this going to be one upgrade at a time as you save a few bucks here and there?

Re: 300 win mag build

I just made the same purchase, gonna order a xlr chassis for it (maybe a AIAX) , I will probably send the action to Pacnor or Benchmark to get a barrel and have it trued. Have a NF waiting for it once its complete.

Re: 300 win mag build

Sorry I was vague, the rifle will be used predominantly for long range. If there is a competiton close where this rifle would be a good fit yes I'll shoot it. The guy I bought it from said it was a state police issue if I understood him correctly with less than 50 rounds down the tube. I hate to be ignorant but you guys need to give me some pretty specific questions and I'll get the answers I've only been playing with rifles for a little over a year and still have a lot to learn.

Thanks for scope input I've got a nightforce that will probably end up on the gun and I did order the 208 amax bullets.

Re: 300 win mag build

cropins, did you mean it is a rem. 700 pss? If so it should have a HS precision stock on it. I had one in a 308, and was a very good shooter for a factory gun. There are many upgrades that you might do.

Re: 300 win mag build

I did about the same thing with a 700 Sendero in 300 WM ... here's mine:

DSCN0797.jpg

I added a Timney Trigger and it is a big improvement. Bought the stock used from a forum member ... haven't bedded it yet. If you are on a budget, stay glued to the PX section of the 'Hide, you will find most everything you need pops up there on a fairly regular basis.

Re: 300 win mag build

I also just picked up a 300 WM, Remington 700 5R MilSpec. I am working on the upgrades right now. I have Timney trigger that should be here today and a muzzle brake that I am adding later this week when it gets here. I put a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 with the mil/mil set up on top of mine.

Re: 300 win mag build

I started with the same rifle. This is what I ended up with, Rock Creek MTU contour, cut to 24. Stock trigger, tuned at 2 lbs. Im shooting the 208 Amax with 65 grain of IMR4350.

Re: 300 win mag build

Don't mean to hijack, this pertains to your build though.....

I had always heard magnum bbls last about 1500 rds. Is that ballpark true if you go with custom bbl like Bartlien, Rock, etc.?

I love the .300 mag, post pics and a range report when you get that puppy built out!

Re: 300 win mag build

The 300WM needs more respect that it gets. That cartridge is a hammer. I shot two near 600# cow elk in consecutive years one with a 338 DTA moving a 225 Nos Accubond and the 2nd with a 300WM moving a 200 Nos Accubond. Both just crumpled from the shot where they were standing. I am tempted to get a 300 for my DTA covert but not sure how to adjust the powder to a 16" barrel yet.

Re: 300 win mag build

Have a 300 Win. Mag. using a Remington 700 reciever only. McMillan A-5 with adjustble cheek weld, Jewell trigger, Badger Ordance M-5 DBM, AI five round magazines, Elite Iron Max Tac muzzel brake, Pachmyer 1" decel pad, and a Krieger 28" #9 MTU contour barrel. Using it for 1000 yard target for now but soon it will be semi retired and a new 260 Rem. built around a 591 Surgeons will be the go to 1000 yard target rifle.

This 300 WM rifle a tack driver and the heavier grain bullets buck the wind pretty darn good.

The 210 grain bergers work well and the 190 SMK's also work good. The barrel is shot out now and when it gets re-barreld I'm looking foreward to running some of the new hybrid Bergers down it. Especially the hybrid 215's and the 230's.

"I had always heard magnum bbls last about 1500 rds. Is that ballpark true if you go with custom bbl like Bartlien, Rock, etc.?"

Actually I got about 1130 rounds down my 300 WM barrel before it was done. It had a Krieger barrel, so I'd say that's "ballpark true" with any brand barrel and this caliber. Throat is what gets erroded out. Looks like someone put a small blow tourch to it. Could cut it back and re-chamber with reamer, but new barrels are not that much $$$. If you think the barrel life of a 300 WM is short lived, a buddy of mine gets about 800 rounds down his 243 Win. when it's done. Possibly could double life of barrel if it was Melonited. Will try that some time in the future.

Re: 300 win mag build

I would first swap the trigger for a Timney 510, and sell the old one to someone who feels like tinkering. Get a top of the line stock that fits you well in what ever configuration you want from McMillan or Manners. AICS 2.0 is another favorite if you don't wish to bed it right away. Have someone like Mark Gordon, GAP, William Roscoe, or any other great smith install a muzzle break, so it's actually fun to shoot. All of this will be money well spent with nothing lost should you later decided to custom build on that action.

As already said, work up a hand load with the 208 AMAX, and you will be very happy. Best of luck.

Ahhh.....the price for speed! Then again, drag racing motors replace piston, heads, and everything else moving every few runs.....you gotta pay to play.....

MPrimo, cool looking stock, does yours have a datachable mag? If so what kind etc? [/quot

Yes. It is a Wyatt so I didn't have to re-inlet the stock. It was cut for a BDL. Works pretty good but takes only Wyatt single stack mags.

Re: 300 win mag build

So many replies I don't know where to start, all of it excellent info, I can't wait to put as much of it as possible to use gonna start with trigger work, 208 amax and H-1000 with a muzzle brake asap. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

Re: 300 win mag build

Cropins. My 5R came with the 24 inch barrel and it was already threaded.

Re: 300 win mag build

I got my Timney trigger in the mail today. It was very easy to set up at 2 lbs of pull. I am also going with the 208 A-Max. I have not started loading them yet. I have some box ammo that I am going to use as break in bullets and then that brass will be loaded up with the 208's. I think I am going to try IMR7828SSC. Only reason is I have a pound of it that needs to get used up. If it works, great if not then I may go to the H1000 also. I have never loaded that powder but I hear a lot of great things about it.

Re: 300 win mag build

Whopper,
Let us know what load works for you with the IMR7828ssc I choose H1000 because that was a rec. from Ogreshooter and Fredrick also because thats what local gun shop had in stock. I hate to have to pay hazmat fee on a botttle of experimental powder.

Something has to give......and the barrel is where it happens

Remington 700 Sendero 300 Win Mag (In Progress)
Nightforce 5.5-22x50
Needs a better trigger (thinking Timney?)
Bagder FTE Brake
Next upgrade will probably be a tactical bolt handle.
