New Savage 10PC with 5R

As you can tell from my post count I am new to the forum and long range shooting. I wanted to ease into the discipline so I ordered a Savage PRE CAR 308 5R 20 THRED from Bud’s. I picked it up last week from the ffl and finally tonight was able to sit down and start to become familiar with it. One of the things I wanted to see was the 5R rifling. I grabbed a bore light and counted...6...I Google imaged 5R...I then grabbed a loop to double check...6 lands.

Have any of you who have recently purchase a 10 PC had this issue? Tomorrow I will see how Bud’s cs responds.

Sounds like yours came with the standard barrel. Does the rifling look like a standard cut? 5R should look like the rifling is rounded over.

Does the box show Part Number 19057?

The lands appear to have a very slight radius but I will get a better loop from work tomorrow and check again.

The box has #19057

As a lifelong lurker in forums and new to LR shooting this has caught my eye. I just picked up the same rifle Saturday, I will now have to go buy me a bore light and check this out on my new rifle. My Savage box has #19057 as well; I have not fondled the rifle much as I am working in Tulsa and have no other accessories for it here, I guess we will see tomorrow.

I checked it out again and sure enough 6 lands. I called Bud’s CS but spent 20 minutes stuck in a loop of no response. I then called Savage and they (through UPS) are picking it up this week and will put the correct barrel on. Great CS from Savage.

I count 6 as well, I guess I will go ahead and call Savage and bypass Bud's.

These rifles are just a special that Savage makes for Buds? Interesting that two new guys picked up the rifles recently only to find each other on this forum with the same problem.

Bad thing is that I am working in Tulsa (I live in Texas)and if I would have not read his post I would not have even bothered to check as I had the box stowed in my room closet, I am glad I saw it.

Not sure what the food chain is in the firearms industry but I was told by one business selling the rifle that these are made for a specific distributer. I was on automatic email notice at 1 place in MN and Buds in KY. Received email from both on the same day indicating they were back in stock.

Not sure about interesting but it is logical. In my case, new to LR shooting + very limited budget=This rifle was one of a few choices that fit my criteria and budget. Besides, where else would I post something like this?

I checked and it definitely is a 5r with 5 groves.

That is good that yours is correct. I call Bud's and Savage, Bud's was a dead end, called Savage and was told that the S/N on my rifle showed it as 5r and that I should go have it check out and get back to them. I was kind of PO'ed for a bit but I will find a smithie to look at it and call them back. None of these 10 PC ever came with a 1:12 twist did they, if anyone knows that is.

That's a negative on the 1:12 twist. They should be coming with a 1:11.25 twist.

I was asking about the 10 PC in general, I was under the impression that they are all 1:10 twist except the 5R version, if it is indeed not a 5R rifling on my rifle then 1:10 twist would not be that problematic.

My main issue is I am working out of town, working 7-12's, living in a Hotel for about 8 months now, I have always been a shooter, so I was board at work one day and found this forum, which is great BTW. So after reading and learning a few things I was getting excited about getting into LR shooting. Anyways, I need to have the gun looked at and I will call Savage and let them know what’s up, if I ever get the time to do so.

All of the Savage 5R guns that I know of are Acusport Exclusives

Update. The rifle was picked up by UPS for Savage the first week of March and they are providing me with a new rifle with an ETA the first week of April. Nice customer service there. She barely laughed when I requested a few extra mags for being so patient.

aviumvenator I am glad Savage is taken care of you, like I said I was told that the S/N on my rifle showed it had 5R rifling and that I needed to get it checked out. Well I have not really had time (well kinda out of sight out of mind) but after seeing this again I decided to try and get a pic, I still count six lands, will be calling Savage again tomorrow, we will see what happens.

... Just like the Remington's. Who are these Acusport people anyway? Why are they so secretive?

danoob, offer to send the picture or the link here next time you speak with cs at Savage. They have been helpful so far.

Acusport is a distributor for numerous brands for dealers. I know we use them at our store.
