I am in the beginning stages of a .300WM project, with my ultimate goal being effective hits at 1 mile. My plan all along has been to shoot the 208gr amax due to the good price and good reviews.

However, I just found the berger 230gr hybrid OTM bullet with a BC of .711. Will my 26" remington 5r 1-10" barrel shoot these well? Any idea on a velocity?

Any one else out there shooting these hybrids?

Too your question for a minute. At 2850 fps out of your 26 inch barrel which is moderate. G7 of .368 as posted by Mr. Litz and others via my Google-fu in real world shooting.

1760 yards youll be at 69 MOA of drop. Granted you have a 20 MOA base and the right scope you can pull off the elevation issue. On to wind a 2 mph full value breeze (can you identify a 2 mph breeze at 1760 yards? Or 1000 yards? Maybe 500 yards?) youll be off the target (POA) by 42.56 inches. (with rounding to the hundreths place) Dont forget spin drift. Also in average conditions dangerously flirting with transonic into subsonic region.

Not trying to break your neck here but realistically that doesnt include shooter error or other factors mis-read ect ect Possible yes. Do you own Mr. Litz book? Ill put a plug in for it here. It does a great job of informing you to the point of relistically being able to pull off first round hits. Let us know how it turns out.

I do not own Mr. Litz book, but it sounds like something I need to look into.

However, my goal for this rifle is more realistically between 800yds and 1500yds max. The 1760yd target would just be for fun when I get the chance. First round or 5th round hit would satisfy me on the mile target. I'll head to the reloading forum now to check out that thread.

Re: Berger 230gr Hybrid info

Yes I would say his book is one of the best $50 investments a reloader/shooter could make. Looking at the bullet data it will be the go-to projectile for the shooting you are talking about. What powder are you thinking about running?

Re: Berger 230gr Hybrid info

If you're only going to be shooting a mile, stick with the 208 Amax. No need to spend double on a super fancy projectile when there is a proven one for cheap. The 208 will stay stable sub-sonic for a very long time and although I've found bullets that are more accurate, they do a fine job for shooting steel, rocks and whatnot at ridiculous distances. The last time I shot my 300WM long, 1920 yds. was the cold bore first shot of the day. Once you get used to this ELR stuff, a mile really is not hard... unless you're in a match or your life is on the line and you have to make the first round hit. That can be a bit challenging in a new area, but second round hits are fairly typical.

Good luck on your project.

John

Powder was going to be a whole other thread.

I have always been a fan of varget in .223 and .308, and don't have a clue where to start on .300WM.

If you have any suggestions, send them my way.
