Got a 5R I love 24" .308, and have a TB 30P-1 on order

I need to get both rifles threaded, 5R will stay 24"

My old SPS tac .308 with around 5500 rounds down the pipe is going to be my "500 yards max suppressed light weight rifle fun gun"

I have a Bushnell Yardage Pro that will LRF to 500 yards and the drop down turrent 500 yards is max.

Should I go super compact with the 16" or get more FPS with the 18" 30P-1 can is 9"

what do you guys think?

I have Savage FCP with a 16" Mcgowen barrel specifically for use with an AAC Cyclone and it works very well. Launches 155 bullets at 2750+ FPS and will make 1000 yard hits with no problem.

Just a question here but why are you limiting it to only 500 yards? Does the shorter barrel and suppressor only give you the desired results up to 500 yards?

I don't know I've never had a .308 in 16" or 18" so that is why I posted this question.

I can hit a 6" plate at 500 yards all day long with my SPS tac 20" If I could do that with a 16" barrel I would be happy.

The scope is the main reason for the 500 yard max it has a built in LRF and the max on deer are 500 yards, and with the drop down turrent (that STOPS at 500 yards), so I would have to install the regular turrent to go over that. I can hold over and shoot if I need too.

I have other rifles that shoot long range, and I will use this as a hunting rifle, I live in FL so a 500+ yard shot on a hog/deer whould would be highly unlikely.

I just want the smallest/lightest rifle for carrying around.

Going to flute it when you cut it? I thought I've read 18" being the optimal short .308 barrel but I was hitting at 500 yards with my bushmaster orc with his the heavy non bull profile 16" barrel so if its all about weight 16 should work.

Also between my 16" ORC and my LTR I did have to dial up about 1 moa additional from 100 to 500 in the 16" barrel. So not a terrible jump. Obviously all rifles are different etc but I don't see it making just a huge difference.

A 16" will easily make 500 yards.

we just tested a 16.5 700P we cut down to 16.5. It performed fine out to 550yd which is as far as we tested it. The bullets go a little slower, but as long as you know your dope you'll be good.

Exactly!
I shoot from 14"-18" all the time. Starting distance for practice once drops are confirmed is typically 500 yards.
There is velocity loss for sure, just more drop and drift for said cartridge.
