Galveston, Texas.... ?

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

If you're wanting white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, you won't see it in Galveston. That being said there is still plenty to do, see, and fun to be had.

Seawolf State Park
Moody Gardens
Schlitterbahn Water Park
Houston Natural Museum of Science
Kemah Boardwalk

All of those are things I would recommend. I've been to everything but the Seawolf State Park and I plan to see it all again for the weekend of memorial day.

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

We went there over the summer with the kids and KillShot has it right. I spent just about every summer down there, keep in mind its not Florida.

Some ideas
Take the ferry over to Port Bolivar. You will see some dolphins and some big ships. Also it is free versus the expensive dolphin tours. Once there check out Fort Travis and if you have time fish the bay and crab in the jetties!!!

Pier 21

Go catch a Astor's game. They might be playing your Braves!!!

If you surf, the waves break better by the old Flag Ship Hotel.

Now I now why the water is so dirty there...

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

I have been in Galveston several times, including the beginning of this week. Here are my suggestions:
The Bolivar Peninsula - still recovering from Hurricane Ike, but a good place to visit.
There is an offshore oil platform museum in Galveston, only a couple of miles from the ferry dock there.
The USS Texas battleship museum is not too far away.
Lots of good seafood, plus crawfish are in season right now.

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

The water matches the sand in Galveston. Chocolate.

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

It's not the traditional blue like the Florida area, most likely cause of the Gulf coast current.

Moody Gardens is an awesome place, just be prepared for humidity it's a pain to get used to.

If there hasn't been any storms blow up into the gulf, the water will be a pretty blue-green color. If there HAS been storms in the gulf, the water will look pretty much like a dirty lake.

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

From what I remember being there & going out in the water . reason why the water is so sandy dirty light-brown color is there is so little slope to the Shelf .
SLOW moving water & you can wade out & keep going & the water never goes above your head forever . Watching surfers & there was nothing much for waves either but that did not stop them from playing on little waves there . was nothing like the west coast here and hard busting waves .

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

If your going that far, from WY down to Galveston, take the extra time and go on down to Corpus Christi or South Padre Island. Both have much prettier beaches and brighter blue(not muddy green/brown) water. There is even a Schlitterbahn on S. Padre now. If your set on Galveston, take everyones advise and get over to Bolivar. Lots fewer people on High Island and better/cleaner beaches.

Re: Galveston, Texas.... ?

I used to live at Clear Lake, just up the road.

There are some neat museums on Galveston. But if you drive up to NASA Johnson Space Center, my old employer, the Space Center Houston visitor center is no-miss. You can easily spend a day there, including getting a tour of JSC which will take you into the original mission control, etc. It's less than 1/2 hour from Galveston.

Near JSC is the Armand Bayou nature preserve. That's good for a couple of hours and you will probably see snakes and lizards galore.

And the Battleship Texas is just north of Clear Lake. There is a sub there as well. The battleship is a FANTASTIC exhibit and is one of the last real "Dreadnaught" class ships afloat. I think it was the same ship class as the Arizona.

And Galveston is home to some of the best Hot Tamales (served from carts) you'll ever have.

When I lived down there, the drug problem was so bad that you wanted to be off island after dark. The gunfire would start 10-ish. But I think it's a lot cleaner now, crime-wise.

Enjoy. It's a fun area...

Cheers,

Sirhr

If you fish, the trout are starting to move. Pop a few tops while casting off the jetties and enjoy the nice weather.

Don't miss Col. Bubbie's Surplus on "The Strand" - it's a tradition!
