I would recommend checking to see if your FFL is good with it. ...To prevent any surprises post purchase. Many FFLs won't process the lower as a pistol if the manufacturer's original intent was a rifle or the lower isn't specifically marked as a pistol lower. HTH

Then its marked as " Other" on the 4473. Dealer has no choice in the matter. Unbuilt lowers are " Other", thats the law.

I believe anymore you have to be 21 to purchase a stripped AR15 lower. If thats the case I don't think it matters what you build it as if you got it stripped...
There is a little deal about you cannot take a rifle built lower (already built gun) and turn it into a pistol. This may have gone by the wayside but I don't really keep up with AR stuff anymore.

ATF told me if you buy a striped lower, its just sold as a "gun", not a pistol or a rifle. IF it is striped you can build a rifle or a pistol on it, doesn't matter. Also, if you build a rifle on it, it must always be a rifle. But if you first build a pistol on it, you can turn it into a rifle, but once a rifle it must remain so, cant to back to a pistol. So, if you buy a ar rifle, it must remain a rifle. I know, it alittle confusing! But you know how the feds work, nothing is straight up.
ATF told me if you buy a striped lower, its just sold as a "gun", not a pistol or a rifle. IF it is striped you can build a rifle or a pistol on it, doesn't matter. Also, if you build a rifle on it, it must always be a rifle. But if you first build a pistol on it, you can turn it into a rifle, but once a rifle it must remain so, cant to back to a pistol. So, if you buy a ar rifle, it must remain a rifle. I know, it alittle confusing! But you know how the feds work, nothing is straight up.

Correct X2. A stripped lower should <span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> be registered as either rifle <span style="font-style: italic">or</span> pistol. The correct designation is <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="text-decoration: underline">other</span></span>. If a dealer tells you otherwise I'd respectfully suggest you take your business elsewhere as I'd be wondering what else he might not know/do incorrectly.

Who cares what the 4473 says anyway? They are not sent in to the feds anyway. There is no gun registry in this country.

I would check your state laws too.
Here in CA I had to purchase a lower that was already configured as a pistol. No FFL would just sell the lower and DROS it as a handgun.
My FFL then told me to keep copies of my DROS that annotated the lower as a handgun.
The reason I recommend to double check you state laws is because some states DO register firearms. If your lower was annotated as a rifle at time of purchase your state LE might consider your AR pistol a SBR or Assault Weapon, regardless of configuration.
I can't wait to move my business to a free state.

I may have missed it above. But the new ruling is the Lower is listed as a Receiver.........by the FFL. SHould be pretty std for most states, change occured around 1.5 yrs ago I believe.
