I just bought myself a new tactical rifle (.308, bolt action)... scope is on backorder... but I still need to pick up a set of rings to mount the scope. No need for a scope base; there is a picatinny rail built into the receiver.

All that said, I did a bunch of research and read a lot of threads... but the points that I haven't seen addressed are ring material and width.

I've narrowed my selection down to a few manufacturers and at this point I'm splitting hairs in terms of quality. Now I'm just looking to figure out which set of rings is most appropriate to my rifle.

I'm going to be running some pretty hot loads, but clearly nothing ridiculous.

I'm curious to see what your opinions are on a couple things...
1.) Steel vs. Aluminum (steel= stronger, aluminum= lighter)? Is there any reason to be looking at steel rings for my application? I would think that aluminum is more than strong enough.
2.) Ring width? Badger Ordinance, for example, offers a wider scope ring (i.e. their M40 Scope ring) that would be a bit stronger and probably hold a bit better. Certainly worthwhile on larger calibers with stout recoil (.338, .50cal) However, for my rifle? ...beneficial, or simply overkill?

Your experience and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Punter

Re: scope ring advice

I've been having real good luck with UTG quick detach rings so far, have a lever quick release, every time i've taken the scope off and put it back on it's went straight back to zero, they are heavy built all aluminum with spring loaded lever locks. not too pricy either at 20-30.00 a set and they're available in 1" and 30mm both.

Re: scope ring advice

I have had great luck with TPS rings! I have used them on several rifles with great luck. They are a great quality at a good price.
