Can someone tell me whether or not I have to take an M2008 action in an AICS stock out to remove the barrel like with an AE? Or can I leave it all together like an AW removal?

You might be able to figure out a way but its not worth it.

Is there more too it than putting the barrel in the vise, inserting the action wrench and twisting it off? What happens if you don't take the action out?

I'm just wondering if it's necessary to take the entire gun apart. I'd rather not if I don't have to.

You should not have to remove the action from the stock. Tighten the barrel up in a barrel vise, use the proper action wrench and go for it. To my knowledge, only actions with a removable recoil lug (Remington, Savage, etc) require taking the action out of the stock. I have one pinned lug on a R700 and it can go thru barrel change without removal from the stock.

I just dont like the idea of using an action wrench to break it free. Too much torque in too small of an area.

I like Chad Dixons idea.....use a crescent wrench. place it close to the barrel and i think it spreads the torque out better without sticking a piece of metal up in the action and worrying about damaging the raceway. Not to mention an oversize crescent wrench can be had from Sears. No special tool needed.

Its two action screws to remove the action from the chassis. not enough work to try and skip at the sacrifice of doing it a better way.

Well according to Marty at Badger, if you have an AI style action wrench then there is no need to take it out of the stock.

So spread the word.
