Gunsmithing Building an Ar-15 , how do I check headspace?

Re: Building an Ar-15 , how do I check headspace?

At the very least, get a go/no-go gauge set. That's not too fancy is it?

Using brass instead of a headspace gauge is not recommended. If you want to get repeatable and accurate readings there really is no way around a headspace gauge

The safest way to check headspace is with the go/no-go gauges. Your face is right next to the port, and if you are off, your can permanently damage yourself, including losing your eyesight in at least your strong-side eye.

Do your health a favor and at least borrow a set of gauges. It is worth it for the end result.

There is always the Darwin method of 'load, shoot, and pray' If it is out of spec, hopefully it won't go off, if it does, hopefully it wont kill you.
