I am considering trying to either build or come across a 300blck bolt action rifle
I know many think it is not very practical, but i will use it as a short range hunting rifle suppressed if all goes as planned.
I am looking for a 16inch barrel and might even go with an SBR
Before i delve into a project however i thought i would check in to make sure i am not going to waste my time

what do you all think?
will this caliber be around for a while or should i make a different rifle, similar with a different caliber?

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

I personally think the caliber will stay around. People for years have been trying to come up with a 223 AR alternative and this is the first to really gain traction. However, if I were you, if you already have an AR I wold build an AR upper first to see if it works for you. If would be a cheaper and probably quicker investment.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

Same ballistics as a 30-30 Winchester.
Wildlife management agencies have been using the setup that you describe for many years.
The 300 BLK really is just a SAMMI Spec version of the 300 Whisper.
The differences between the two are slight.

It has been around for a long time already. The 300 Whisper.

I have a 300 Whisper / 223 Ackley switch barrel bolt gun. It is a lot of fun to shoot suppressed. At the longer ranges first round hits can be tough as the bullet is dropping like a rock.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

I did a 16" build, all new so it was a bit more. I did it for my daughter to start hunting. Main reason for the AR was to have the adjustable stock option and just switch uppers(5.56/300 BLK) I used the Leupold VX-R patrol scope.

I had second plans of a 7mm-08 or .308 Winchester 70 compact featherweight and use the youth loads. Looking back, it's a great little round for close range hunting but then the logistics of another caliber to stock is another issue. I don't have plans to use it for anything else since the 5.56 does it for me in the AR platform.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

why build when you can buy? a round like this doesn't need a major custom build....especially if it's gonna be used for hunting.

savage makes one, as does remington....

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

it is a really neat little cal, I am sure it will be around for a long time because there is so many uses for it either in a semi or bolt action. you can run suppressed or plain supersonic with a plethora of quality bullet weight but i wouldn't go as far as having a bolt action rifle built since there are already a couple manufacturer doing just that and again an Ar is so much fun with this caliber.
hope this helps.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

I wanted a certain configuration--and I built it. It matched the 5.56 upper she has other than the optic.

This thing is one hell of a shooter as well. Im loading 110 vmax with 20.5 grains of H110 and it shoots one ragged hole at 100 yds. I have played around with remingtons subsonic factory stuff and it shot that around 1-1.25 inches at 100 yds. Pretty fun but I will have to agree that this is much more fun out of an ar platform.

I have had more fun with this caliber than I can ever remember having with any before. I can reload for this thing so fast compared to my other calibers. Got my redding powder thrower set on 20.5 and charge 100 at a time.

Its really gratifying compared to loading precision rifle rounds with my chargemaster. I can knock out 100 rounds of this stuff on a single stage press in a half an hour if I have my stuff set up. Im loving it.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

holy crap thats exactly what my imagination had in my head

that thing is sweet, how much did the project cost if you dont mind me asking?

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

Yup...I'm holding out for the new 700SPS in this chambering. Was going to go AR-15 upper but a bolt gun...well...it's quiet.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

Is the accuracy really there? I keeping toying with a BLK bolt action build, but o keep fearing that it's not an accurate round after reading some articles.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

I hate to admit it but the little fucker shoots tighter groups at 100 than my fclass rifle. It really surprised me in the accuracy dept. the fc2 reticle in the scope is not really suited for what the rifle is actually capable of. The dot is too damn big so I use the tip of the post beneath the dot as my aiming reference. I figured it would be moa if I was lucky. I was shocked. Mine shoots phenomenal at 100 yds with my supers and mediocre with factory subs. Anyone that gets behind the thing is amazed. I have no regrets. Still fun but not as fun as semi auto.

Do the bolt gun first and you will end up with two guns. If you do the semi first you probably will never have a bolt gun in 300 blk. I don't know about factory ammo. I've only fired like 20 rounds of Remington 220 subsonic through it and started hand loading. That may be what the issues are in the articles you are reading. I have never heard anyone say anything good about Remington factory subs. I had some 155 match from pnw but I never shot it. Sold it to a buddy to get him started wih his blk.

I am certain if you work a load up for a bolt action blackout you should be able to make it shoot. You are not going to be limited with powder choices or projectiles either since you don't have to consider feeding/cycling. This is good because what is a really accurate powder/projectile combo may not necessarily work in an ar platform. Opens up a few more bullet choices that would not function reliably in a semi.

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

i have a savage 10 with a 16in douglas double x barrel and a bc medalist stock and cdi bottom metal. i have right around 750 in teh gun and it drops deer right now with 110 vmax bullets and is a really fun 100-200 yard gun with 200 or 220s. i have much of fun with bolt guns and they are hungry enough , the ar15s really burn ammunition

Re: Bolt Action 300 Black Out

Here's (2) bolt guns I had done. First one I had done was based on a Remington 700 .17FB SPS donor rifle. Put a 16" Shilen SS Match barrel in heavy varmint contour on it and had the rifle bedded in a HS LTR stock.

Second rifle I had built was on a Weatherby Vanguard. This was ust completed a month or so ago. I haven't had the time to shoot it yet. It's got a 11.5" Shilen SS heavy varmint barrel that was used from the same blank as I used for the Remington. I put a Hogue overmould stck on it. It's very compact and feels great in the hands.

Accuracy of the .300 Blackout is nothing spectacular but it's a fun cartridge to shoot none the same. Below are (3) consecutive 5-shot groups taken at 100 yds. during one of my last visits to the range with the Remington.
