hey guys i have finally made my decision on my replacement rifle the remmy700p308win,i sold my rem700p 300win mag. I now need the right ammo and was wondering if any of you guys run hornady 168grn. and how well they preform.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

i run the 168 gr amax match through my GAP "put together" 308 - 22" barrel - i think the twist is 11.25 - might be 1/10... i'll have to look again

- i can shoot .5 moa with mine off sandbags.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

thanks for the info,i will take any help i can get i have been shooting a 300win.for 6yrs, so going to a 308win is going alot different for me.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

I still have all my hardware off my last rifle so all i really need is the new rifle and glass, put it all back together and get it dialed in.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

i shoot the hornady 168 bthp they do pretty good out to 600 but i have not shot them much farther. i heard they start tumbling around 850. i am shooting them out of an sps V 1-12 twist. same gun u will be shooting them out of. guys are telling me that if i want to go past 850 i need the hornadys 178 bthp or 175 smk's

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

thanks for your info, what is the barrel wear like with that ammo would molly coating be less abrasive in the bore. for my 300win mag i was using 180grn. barns tsx.they claim to have less friction down the barrel.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

Truth be told, its a short action instead of the long action youre familiar with so bolt manipulation might be a little weird for you at first. you'll get used to it. other than that, well, the .308 has less recoil, so that'll be a big plus. cheaper to shoot. You have to pay more attention to the wind, but if you are already practiced in that you'll be in the groove in no time.

Enjoy your new stick, i still have and love my 700P in .308, and the SS scope was a good pick too. enjoy, sir.

For what its worth, i know a buddy who has a 700P older than mine, and he has about 2500 rounds down the tube and it still shoots just like it did when new. He does NOT shoot moly. I do not shoot moly either, and last weekend and weekend before that, my rifle was holding 2.5-3 inch 5-shot groups at 600 yards. This is normal when i do my part. I currently have just a little over 1000 rounds through mine.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

I prefer the 175 SMK to the 168's. I notice a lot of opened up groups and even tumbling at 800-850 yards with the 168's. (4200 elevation and varying barometric pressure.)

If you never shoot more than 600 yards, 168's will be servicable for you. I have not stretched the 175's to 1000 yet, but I have a feeling they should be just fine. (22" barrel, 2575 fps, 11.25 twist Rock Creek, loaded to 2.82 COAL (have not measure to the ogive yet, that may be my next adventure in reloading. That said, I have had no issues just measuring the COAL.)

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

That is just about the same setup I am putting together. Just need a chassis, base and rings to have a finished rifle.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

i think i read somewhere that molly is not good for you barrel. 308 has a really good barrel life. not uncommon to have a barrel with 10,000 rounds and see minimal difference. can anyone else chime in on the molly coated bullets im not for certain on that but pretty sure its not good for barrel

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

I have a 24" 5R Remy 700 that is a blast to shoot. The 700p has a 1:12 barrel and will dig on the 168SMKs. My shooter will shoot consistent .5 min groups at 100 all day with 42 gr of Varget.
I just bought a 5R Remy 700 in 300WM and am fighting with it. I can't get this puppy to group consistently for sh!t. It came straight from LA precision and was bedded in a manner T5a trued and trigger work done. Figured it would do great with 190SMKs running H1000 but I struggle. This is my first WM shooter and am flying blind. If you don't mind sharing what you liked I would very much appreciate it. Has fun with you new hot rod! You will love it!

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

thanks for all your info guys,i think i will try the same ammo i ran in my 300mag,federal premium barns tsx she ate them like candy. on a good day 7rnds.covered by a quarter at a 100yrds. Hide boiler that might be your issue with your 300 try a box, also i bought a slip on recoil pad because before that i could put about three rnds through it and had to put it down.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

hideboiler if you do put on a recoil pad you might have to re adjust for your eye relief, you could get scope bit. if your accuracy does not improve it might be the glass i know mrk4's are great scopes but you might have one thats not.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

I've shot .4" @ 100yd groups pretty consistent with 168Amax's factory non superformance and handloads over 44gr Varget or R15 out of my SPS-V. .5-.7MOA out to 300, haven't gone any further. The Horn Amax, and BTHPs, have nothing in common with the SMK, I've read several reports on here of them being successful at distances the SMK tumbles.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

When I first got my Remington 700 SPS Tacitcal (20 inch, 1:12 twist), I tried a bunch of different ammo to see what it likes to eat. It seemed to like the Hornady Match 168 grain AMAX. So, I bought some 168gr AMAX and rolled my own using ....

Bullet 168gr AMAX
Powder 42.7gr AA2520
Primer CCI
Velocity 2558 fps

I've shot them out to 545 yards so far and they perform superbly. I'm getting .5 MOA and better at all distances. JBM says they stay supersonic out to 1000 .... although, I haven't had a chance to shoot them that far yet.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

I have 2 remmys that love the 168 amax and shoot the 168 SMK almost as well. .5 moa with the handloads.

Re: Rem700P 308win+ss5-20x50

My stick has a nice RWS Break on it that makes it a pleasure to shoot. My brothers XCR has nothing and it kills me so I know what you mean. I never thought of it being the glass, but it was a brand new scope purchased for this rifle. I'll pull the Mark 4 off my 308 R700 since its a known good. thanks for the reply, didnt mean to hijack your thread.
