this is for a 5R 308, vortex viper pst 4-16x50 in moa/moa

i really only plan on going out to 500 yds (for now). i am very new to precision rifles and scopes, and all the other fun stuff to go along with it.

if i get the 20 moa base, is that going to throw of my 100 yd shots and scope adjustments?

honestly, my typical shooting ranges will be 100-300 for sure. but i am going to try and reach to 500.

does my question even make sense?

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

if you are buying the base anyway, no reason not ot use the 20moa, if you have a base, then for what you describe there is no reason to change it

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

i do not have a base or rings that will work. when i did shoot it, i took the nikon prostaff and cheap rings and bases off my 700 30-06.

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

How many moa of elevation does your scope have? How many moa do you need to shoot out as far as you want to shoot?

Putting a 20moa base adds 20moa to your possible UP elevation. UP elevation on a flat base is approximately 1/2 of total elevation.

A typical 308 will need 11 moa of up elevation to shoot 500 yards and maybe as much as 35moa of up elevation to shoot 1000 yards.

A lot of shooters put a 20moa base because it is pretty much a standard. Doesnt really hurt anything and can help.

check the equipt section for coupon codes

you can spend a lot more but it will be for no reason, if you really want to go all out get 2 sets of rings and use 3-4 (whatever fits)

also a good value:

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

i guess what i was trying to get at was is putting on the base for increased elevation going to screw with close up shots, say 50 yards.

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

It won't because even for close stuff you'll dial in elevation. My 35 yard dope is about the same as my 200 yd dope, 20 yards is about the same as my 350 yd dope.

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

so basically, the 20 moa base isn't going to hurt. there is no extra charge for the 20 moa vs 0. just buy the damn thing and stop asking stupid questions?

lol

thanks everyone for the input for my rookie question.

no to what? the 20 moa base, or asking stupid questions?

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

Maybe this will help.

Your scope appears to have 75MOA of adjustability which means 37 MOA of vertical if everything is aligned. As superaviator stated, with a flat base, you have enough elevation in your scope to get out a little past 1000 yards. If you get a 20MOA base, you will be able to shoot farther although your 308 may not have the velocity to allow you to use 57MOA of elevation. With the 20MOA base, you can re-zero your scope and still shoot 100 yards and closer. So, the 20MOA base will work and let you do what you want but it won't really provide any benefit over a flat base with your .308 especially shooting to 500 yards..

So, your call whether you get the 20MOA base. Of course, I don't have that scope so verify that it does have 75 MOA of vertical and that you are somewhere in the center of that range at 100 yard zero. If you ever think you will be changing calibers and shooting farther someday with a 700 then getting a 20 might be a benefit in the future.

Hope that helps.

Re: do i need a 20 moa base?

due to time constraints, limited ranges and the cost of shooting, i really don't see me being a 1000 yd shooter. i can only imagine how many rounds and years it takes to be proficient out to 1000. i do have access to a 500 yd open field. most shooting will be within 300, but i do want to work my way up to the 500 yd mark.

No, you don't NEED the base
