Hi there,

I recently bought a M70 Ultimate Shadow rifle in 300WSM. This will be my elk gun.

I had good experience with EGW 20MOA base and Burris XTR rings on my 308 target rifle. Both are made of aluminum.

Since 300WSM generates stronger recoil than 308, and hunting rifle is subjected to harsher use than the target rifle. I wonder if I need steel base and rings.

Can you suggest some brand and model to look into?

Thanks,
Kevin

EGW makes there "HD" model out of steel.

Near Mfg for IMO the best Win M70 base.

Its not like the aluminum is the same used for a beer can, the lady at TPS told me their aluminum rings are actually stronger than their steel rings, Ive got a pair of each on my 308s. Here's the steel TPS rings.

And these are the aluminum.

Re: New M70 needs scope base and rings

Thanks, Bro.
Badger or Near base and rings set runs for over $300, over my budget at the moment. I have to pay for a good scope first. I found EGW doesn't make HD base for W70 short magnum action, might just go with a regular EGW 20MOA base.

Re: New M70 needs scope base and rings

I know, just not sure if aluminum rings can hold up to bumps and dings.

I had a pair of TPS steel rings, very well made, but ended up returning them. TPS has such a small tolerance, I couldn't clap the rings down on my Weaver 3-15X Tactical scope, otherwise they will leave ring marks on the tube.

I am pretty sure I will put either Vortex 5-15X44 or PST 6-24x50 on the gun. Does anyone know if TPS rings work with Vortex scopes.

Re: New M70 needs scope base and rings

Seekins Precision makes a very nice rail for the Win 70 WSM action. Would be worth considering for your 300 WSM, along with some Seekins rings.

Re: New M70 needs scope base and rings

Thanks. Seekins are at the upper limit of my budget. Shooting 300WSM turns out expensive, have to get new dies/brass/bullet/powder, etc.

I like Seekins rail for its recoil lug. I am still wondering if I can get away with cheaper rings such as Burris Signature Zee 30mm. I knew they worked well on 308. Does anyone have experience with these rings on a light weight magnum rifle?

Re: New M70 needs scope base and rings

Go Seekins base and rings....the frustration you'll save is more then worth the extra initial investment.
