So far so good with my new rifle. It consistently shoots 1/4 to 1/2 MOA depending on my beginners skills. I am shooting Gold Medal Match 168 gr Match Kings. I am shooting a 700 SPS action in an HS Precision stock. I am very happy with it. Using a Harris bipod and Super Sniper 10 x 42 scope. I also just got into reloading so I will try to work up something like the Gold Medal Match. I want to paint my gun soon. That should be interesting.

Welcome to the site. I keep hitting the refresh button but the pics won't load for some reason..

Re: 1/4 MOA

Ok think I see how now. I will post the rifle and some groups I have shot.

Re: 1/4 MOA

That sounds great!

I too would love to see some 1/4 MOA fgmm 168 group.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Well now I might get disqualified because I am shooting three shot groups lol, guess I will bump it up to 5 to be in the realm, but can you guys please tell me how I can get some pictures up? Do I have to link to them? Sorry but never uploaded any here?

Ok. Looked in FAQ. Looks like I will have to link to them. Yes these are three shot groups but I am still proud since this is new stuff to me. No pencil holes I promise.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Check out the Google search function on the right side of your screen, type in "How to post pictures". You'll find that a great deal of information can be perused by using the search function.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Look at the FAQ tab.

Host your image on something like Webshots and then put the link in.

Re: 1/4 MOA

I edited my original post as to not sound harsh. Dont want you to take it the wrong way.

Sure the rifle and ammo are capable. However a good understanding of "shooting accuracy" for both rifle and shooter is to do at LEAST five shots per group. Ten round groups will show you shooter consistency with more authority.

Otherwise I could do two shots on top of eachother and say that the rifle and/or me are "one hole shooters". I could do that all the time until the one day I decide to squeeze in a third shot and that shot hits an inch away from my previous two shots on top of eachother. Now the group is an inch, which is far from my previous two shot "single hole". The perception is what you want to diffuse into reality and then confirm the reality by doing it over and over until its boring. At that point you as a shooter know what your capability is with that particular rifle.

To sum it up I personally dont talk about group sizes as thats for me to know and do. Unless of course you're gonna buy my rifle then its different.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Oh no. I am fine. I don't hurt easily. I am so new to all this that I have been judging 3 shots. It seems like I can always hit the first two just like you say and then the third one sometimes spoils it but overall my 3 shots have been looking good. It varies though. Some days it's more like 1/2 inch and then some days I make a real small 3 shot group. Either way I am pretty excited because since I just started out I did not think I could shoot under an inch to tell the truth so for just buying a rifle and going at it I am pretty wound up but this stuff is addictive. I guess I can link to Facebook or Flickr. I will get some up though. I want to post my rifle also. I am having fun with this stuff though for sure.

If this works this is one of the first ones I shot. I was proud of it anyways. I will submit this and see if it works. I measured it around 1/4 but who knows I could be measuring wrong but I thought it was good. I am sure there are lots of you that can do this all the time. I will resize this as I know it is way too big lol.

This one was shot this afternoon. 168 gr Gold Medal Match. Yes three shots.

This one same ammo and was shot around the time the first target I posted was shot. Oh well, I am proud of them. I will start trying 5 shots and see how I do. I dont shoot this well every time, but it happens enough to keep me happy.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Get rid of those dirty bird targets or what ever you call them.
Buy some white paper sight in targets.

Here is my rifle. Kind of a crude setup on the tailgate but what the hell, it works.

Here is another one I fired with same ammo a day or two ago. Again, I will bump up to five and see how I do.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Looks good! At least you know your rifle likes the fgmm. Work on those 5 shot groups at 100 yards and keep up the good shooting.

I've shot like that many of times.

good shooting

Re: 1/4 MOA

Sometimes I measure the two holes farthest apart outer edges and then subtract .308 but since I got calipers I guess I could just measure center to center of the two holes farthest from each other. I am in for a challenge now. 5 shots is going to kick my ass lol.

Re: 1/4 MOA

I guess I got lucky. I think the rifle is the capable one here. I have much to learn and acquire as a shooter or shooting. It is fun learning and I am finding that reloading is just as much fun and goes hand in hand with this, or at least with me it does. I have much to learn there also.

Re: 1/4 MOA

i hate reloading because it takes forever now that im trying to get as accurate as possible. before i reloaded for my pdog guns didnt worry to much, i loaded for my 3 gun guns and thats on progressives and loading mass quantities fast. now for my 308 i trim everything exactly the same, weigh the powder exactly the same and seat everything the same!!! but its badass when u get a good group out of all the measuring and bullshit that goes into it. the more i shoot the more anal i get about my precision rifle. its fucking addicting and borderline crazy. my wife asked me the other day if she could help me (usually seats the bullets and pulls the lever) and i said "no doing it different on these one's babe thanks tho" her reply was fine then, see if i ever help u again

At least you didn't reply, "Sure hon, bring me a sammich..."
Glad my wife has no interest in this stuff <span style="font-style: italic">sometimes</span>.

OP - Nice shootin'...Looks like u have a gun that got some good QC.

I look to post my first precision rifle groups in the next couple of weeks...stay tuned.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Lol. My wife would not offer to help me if she needed the bullets for her own protection in a war zone but I guess it is ok because she would likely try to take me out with a bad reload. Ha. It does take me forever to load because I move so slow but yes I hear you on the anal part. That is the reason it takes me so long. I think I will try to shoot again today. Yes I will try 5 shots. Something tells me it will be a lot harder. I did break my rifle in with procedures I found here. I have no idea whether or not it made a difference. I cleaned between each round for about 10 rounds. I scrubbed the fouling out and then would fire again. I have read that I should only clean it now when the groups open up but who knows. I am getting some paint and throwing it on. If anyone has some ideas on that let me know.

Re: 1/4 MOA

My wife helps me sometimes but it is usually to cold for her in the basement. She forgot to put a primer in one, and it happened to be a batch for a competition. I found out the next day how important it is to prep for these things a week in advance and not the night before.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Well guys I am going to try to shoot those 5 shot groups. Wish me luck.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Out of pure curiosity, what distance are you shooting these targets at?
laugh.gif

Re: 1/4 MOA

100 yards. I have not tried to shoot farther yet. Walk before I run. I just found out that my gun really likes my Hornady Amax loads. Pretty proud of my results. I will post my targets when I get back to the lab.

Re: 1/4 MOA

I think I found a good load or at least these five I loaded last night. I went with the max load listed in my Hornady manual. 44 gr powder, Hornady A-Max bullet, and I seated them around 2.810 give or take. You guys scared me with this 5 shot business. Most of what I shot today was around 1/2 MOA. This is the last target I shot just before dark with my hand loads I just mentioned above and it measured .382 and I am damn proud of it for 5 shots. No, I cant do it every time, but it was nice to do it for the first day I attempted 5 shots. I guess 10 shots is next in which I will likely get my rear end kicked. Having fun though. I want to paint my gun folks, is there any good places you can point me to on how to camo it? That will be a first for me. Going to go after some coyotes soon. Need to camo my gun.

Re: 1/4 MOA

I also picked up these bench rest targets. I just figured I would ditch the dirty birds as recommended. They are cleaner for sure.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Splatter targets or paper, 3-shot groups or five...it doesn't seem to matter much. I'd say you're doing very well. Keep it up and enjoy!

Re: 1/4 MOA

Good shooting. My gun likes the hornady Amax's too. They shoot as good or the same as the sierra hpbt's and where I live are about $15 cheaper. For some reason the sierra's spiked up to like $45 for a box of 100 168gr HPBT tips while I can get the hornady's for around $29. But yea good groups. Try 300 yds next.

Lol I had the same thing with my girlfriend. She wanted to help so I had her clean the cases and dry them (by hand because this was my early days of reloading when I didnt have a tumbler)and you better believe that was the last she helped.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Thanks, I will do that. I have much to learn and I have stayed at 100 yards and never tried over that. I guess I was trying to judge the accuracy of my rifle first. I did not bed the stock and just trusted the bedding block in the HS Precision stock I put on it. The trigger is the factory Xmark pro. I kind of thought about changing the trigger? I just wanted to make improvements here and there. I need a larger bolt knob also because I keep slamming my knuckles on my scope. Like I said though, I am scared to paint my gun. I want to badly, but I have never painted one. I just wonder how in the world to ge the patterns on it. I would like just a regular woodland camo look. Any ideas?

Hey I noticed you live in London KY Seth? I live in Western Ky near Paducah.

That is some great shooting.

Your hand loading skills aren't to shabby either!!

Re: 1/4 MOA

Why would you change anything on that rifle?! Leave it alone and let keep making big holes!

Great shooting.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Hound, congradulations on your new rifle. Your skills seem up to par with your new rifle. Every now and then a gun just fits and shoots perfectly for you, seems like you have found one.

Did you mean bug holes?

Re: 1/4 MOA

Nice shooting! If you are looking for a larger bolt know contact Phoenix Custom Rifles - they are here on the hide and do a really nice job. Look at their website, lots of options.

Re: 1/4 MOA

Nice group and welcome to the hide.

Use the search function under the shoutbox and look up things like "do it yourself krylon" or "how to paint a rifle" and some threads should show up for you. On my gf's cell so its a pain in the ass to post a link for you

Re: 1/4 MOA

That is some fine shooting!!!!

Just curious...how long do you wait between shots? Also, do you dump the cold bore shot and shoot the next 5 at the target?

Re: 1/4 MOA

I've got a friend that I let shoot at my place that had a new Sendero in 7mm. He couldn't get it to shoot better than 1 1/2" Groups every time he shot. I tried to offer some advice but he was so pissed about the gun he wouldn't listen to anything.
He brought over some loads to shoot 1 day an after 2 sets of 3 shot groups at about 1 1/4" groups he actually shot 3 in a 1/2" group, he gets up & announces well I GOT MY LOAD, I suggested he try some more with that load or shoot 5 rounds instead of three, he just quit, an as far as I know that's what he's shooting for a load. Now I laugh to myself as he tells everybody he's got a 1/2" gun.
So moral to the story is 3 shot groups don't mean squat, unless you can repeat them over & over.
