I have not found a mount or set of rings yet that does not benifit from lapping. I do everything now.

If you have it, it absolutely can't hurt. I know there are tons of people who do, and tons of people who don't. It's all a preference

Depends on the quality of the rings and the material.
My Seekins Aluminum rings don't get lapped because they don't need them.
However, I like to lap steel rings because any uneven pressure from steel will wear on the scope tube more so than aluminum.

I align the rings if 2 pc and then "print" them to check contact patterns. If it looks the least questionable they get lapped.
Quality rings rarely need it.
I feel that incorrect torqueing of the rings is responsible for more issues than unlapped rings.

I have lapped Badgers, Nightforce, leupolds and even seekins rings and I have yet to see any set of rings that after a few passes with a lapping bar didnt show high parts and uneven cutting. Not matter how precise they are made, when they are mounted in a mill they will allign differently when mounted on your rifle.
There are always differences in the thickness of the coating or anodizing, differences in the rail, and difference between the scope and ring size (30mm is not always a true exact 30mm between different manufacturers).
If you have the equipment, why not take the 15 minutes and do it right? Then you can be sure of a perfect contact all around the tube.

Lapping your Badger rings or any rings that are similar will void your warranty, good rings like TPS, Badger, Seekings, etc etc DO NOT need lapping. Even these Warne rings didnt or dont need to be lapped.
These TPS rings didnt need lapping, theyre perfect the way they come from the factory.

I have had Seekins rings that absolutely had to be lapped. Before lapping with the caps torqued to 15 lbs I could still see daylight between the scope and the ring right in the bottom. Scopes were USO and Leupold Mk4s.

JGorski, the quality of the rings is only one piece of the puzzle. How the rings fit the base can cause mis-alignment even on good pic rails. Two piece bases are even worse, some factory receivers are drilled in a screwed up manner. I have seen gross mis-alignment using all brands of rings on factory rifles with two piece bases.

Also, take a good quality base of any brand and set it on a Rem. 700. Put the front screws in and snug them down. Watch the rear of the base rise up off the action. This gap is substantial in some cases. Now put the rear screws in and snug them down, the gap closes and you now have a bent base. Put the rings off you choice on this set-up and they will be leanining away from each other to a point that you may only have 25 percent contact between the rings and scope. Really the only way to get a perfect fit is to lap the rings out to 100 percent contact then bed the scope in.
If you set up a few monsters like a 50 cal or 408 based cartridges you must have things right or the set-up will not remain consistent.

Have a pair of centers handy so you can set the bases/bottom rings and then torque the centers in place.....it shows all.
