I'm new to bolt-actions so please bear with me, the FNG. I have a Stiller Tac 30 w/Kreiger barrel coming. Barrel is .308 SS 1:11 20". Range will be 100 to 300 yards to start with. I plan on buying a single stage press next winter and will learn how to reload. What would be the best way to go as far as a factory load to go with? I reckon I'll want to save my brass for reloading. Is brass just brass or is there better and worse brass? And how many times can the brass be reloaded safely? Thanks.

Federal Gold Medal Match. You can get it for just under $1 a round.

+1 for FGMM

For 300 yds 168 g or 175g... whichever is cheaper. Palmetto State Armory usually has the best prices. Look for sales and buy with confidence.

When you stretch out beyond 750yds you'll need to stick with the 175s

I've also had some good luck with the Southwest Ammo offerings.

Hornady and Black Hills work but only if I can't find FGMM... I have seen slightly more variation with Black Hills and Hornady Superformance: FGMM 1 hole groups vs .5-.6MOA groups w/H and BH. They definitely will work in a tactical game but I always like to know I'm shooting the best ammo for my gun to minimize that variable in the equation.

I'm shooting a Rem 700 5R so you may see different results with a different gun.

Southwest Ammo all the way. Price is hard to beat and the quality amazeing. With how well it performs you can't really call it factory.

I've shot tons of it in multiple conditions and competitions. It has never been anything less than awesome.

There is a reason so many people are shooting it now.

Re: Best factory ammunition to start with???

another positive for SW Ammo is that you have Lapua brass to reload after your done...if you are planning on reloading in the future Lapua will give you more firings than the Federal brass.

+1 for sw ammo. I shoot the 175smk with win brass.
Polish it up neck size and decap, prime and ........
You will be happy for some time.
It should be about .42- .50 for the reloads. Will you save money? No. But you will shoot more.

Re: Best factory ammunition to start with???

Lapua brass is more consistant then WW or Fed. I have 5 or 6 loadings on some of mine and usually only need to neck size (Lee collet neck sizing die) and trim.

I suspect that I'll be needing to anneal the necks after one or two more loadings.
