why not Barnard?

are there any of you who would hesitate to use a Barnard repeater action for a long range rig? I do want to compete as my skills improve, so would you see any problems with this action in that arena? On paper this thing looks like a bank vault, and the 60 degree bolt life is appealing to me.

So go ahead and tell me why you would not use the Barnard for your build, and why i should spend my hard earned singles (use your imagination) on something else.

Re: why not Barnard?

Been planning to do just that later this year. I have one of their single shot actions and it is a very good action. The only drawback I see is the choice of bottom metal/mags Barnard decided to use. Someone here has set one up to use ACIS mags but it took some work. Talk to Mac Tilton at MT Guns he knows how to make them work with other mags plus he does some very nice builds. I bet Chad Dixon would take on the project.

Re: why not Barnard?

I have a Barnard in an AICS and I haven't seen one failure to load in the first 200 rounds. I haven't gotten to use it yet in the heat of a competition but it has worked flawlessly in practice so far. I have purposely not cleaned it yet to see if it will malfunction with gunk and it is running great dirty. I don't know if Mac Tilton worked any magic on it or if he left it completely stock but that sucker feeds. I also like the feel of bolt as it moves through the action. It is just so smooth and solid. You are right about that thing being like a bank vault. I would say it has comparable heft or maybe more wall thickness than my TRG42.

I'm hoping to field it in it's first comp at the end of the month so I'll know very soon whether it's a gamer or not.

Re: why not Barnard?

seeing as the Barnard is a rem 700 "clone" i would not see why adapting bottom metal and aics mags to it would be that much of a problem.

Did you guys go for the Barnard triggers as well?

Re: why not Barnard?

CG Jackson for me. I had the CG modified with a longer 1st lever so that the trigger shoe fit deeper into the AICS trigger guard. $30 mod that is worth much more. Great trigger so far!

Re: why not Barnard?

Barnard are OK for a target rifle , but for a field rifle , I would want it to have a bit looser fit , to allow it to function in the field & not bind up due to too tight toleranaces etc .

The Barnard is NOT a Rem700 clone , it uses a large full diameter 3 lug bolt 60 degree lift bolt , like a Swing/AW etc .

The Barnard repeater uses Rem700 triggers only , does not take the Barnard target trigger .

Later Chris

Re: why not Barnard?

I would talk to "Later@ThorGDG" here on the hide, I've transferred a few Barnard actions to him for ELR use in 375 cal.

He has also done some test on the actions for use in field conditions.

Re: why not Barnard?

i guess "clone" was a bad choice of a word, 700 footprint may be a better way to describe it. I like the idea of tight tolerances, if i compete with this rifle its probably going to be more suited to f-class because in Illinois that is the only competition i can find within several hours. its not going to see dirt or sand or much rain, and im probably going to be somewhere i can fix any issue that may arise.

My only real concern is reliable feeding from the magazine, and if i would have to use the reccomeded HS precision bottom metal and DBM.

You should be fine with F-Class. I built mine do to a little bit of everything but the harshest test will be a practical match in either sandy/windy or rainy conditions... even then I'll be able to show up with a clean rifle and I can clean things at night to be ready for the next day so I'm not real worried. From what I can deduce with the shooting I've done so far, there is a channel on the back side of the bolt that scavenges dirt out of the action. It doesn't look like much compared to a heavily fluted bolt but I have seen fluted bolts bind up on custom actions too (usually from heat, not dirt).

I don't know about HS Precision DBM but my Barnie/AICS chambered in 6XC feeds and ejects better than any of my other guns... and that includes my TRG42. I can throw brass as far as I want to with this thing depending on how fast I rack the bolt.

Re: why not Barnard?

i just did a little more reading on the MTguns website and they say the "SM" action is compatible with badger bottom metal, and its the same damn price as a surgeon.

Re: why not Barnard?

I have two and both are flawless. Working on doing another one in the next couple of months. Mac is great to work with.

+1 on Mac Tilton and his business partner Bruce. I drop shipped an AICS 2.0 chassis to them and voila' a one-holer arrived about 40 days later.

Re: why not Barnard?

and the Badgers look awesome too! At the time (about 8-10 months ago) I was piecing my project together people had talked through ejection and feeding issues. Would you say they've all been sorted out?

Re: why not Barnard?

My neighbor has three of the single shots and they are scary accurate. The only fault I find is lack of primary extraction. If the case has minimal taper the initial camming doesn't help much and you have to haul hard on the handle. JMHO

Re: why not Barnard?

Thanks for sharing that! I had no idea they were that popular in F-Class.

Re: why not Barnard?

its looking like i need to sell some things to get the funds together for this sucker........thanks guys.
