Hello to all, I just ordered a new windrunner 50 bmg, I have been looking for a 50 bmg and was leaning towards a Barrett model 99, while looking I came across the Edm windrunner for a few dollors more and fell in love with it, it seems to be a well built rifle and i have heard that it was one of the more accurate 50 bmgs out there in the price range, it also has a 5rd mag, the rifle also has a brake down feature that's nice for transport, its a nice looking rifle, once I seen it I could not stop looking at it, my question is when I ordered it i was told it now comes with a trigger guard feature which would cost $695 to have installed on the recently sold and the earlier models and they are fazing them out, they have a few of the older styles left but I'm just not sure if the newer is better in this case or if I like the look of the older style ive been looking at, the new ones have a mag well feature thats kind of like and ar10, it hides most of the magazine as its installed and the older ones show most of the mag, EDM"s web sight shows the old style and only has one close up of the new style receiver with the trigger guard and it's hard to get a good look, you can see it on there web site under products then look at the trigger guard system, also I have been looking at the old style and i sort of have that older style in my head, I was wondering if anyone here has purchased or seen the new style, it don't cost any more if ordered this way but will cost as I said $695 to have installed down the road if I ended up wanting it, if anyone has seen one or heard that other then the appearance it is the way to go I would like to hear your option, i ordered it with the trigger guard and hope i like it as much as the older style, it will deffinitly protect the mag better, other changes from the older ones are it has a 2.5lb trigger pull as the older ones were a 4lb, also the muzzle brake is a shark gill type and no longer the one with the 80 holes on the 30 degree angle, everthing else seems to be the same, ok everyone thanks in advance...

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hello to all, this is my second post, not sure if i posted the first one correct so i will try one more time, I just ordered a new windrunner 50 bmg, I have been looking for a 50 bmg and was leaning towards a Barrett model 99, while looking I came across the Edm windrunner for a few dollors more and fell in love with it, it seems to be a well built rifle and i have heard that it was one of the more accurate 50 bmgs out there in the price range, it also has a 5rd mag, the rifle also has a brake down feature that's nice for transport, its a nice looking rifle, once I seen it I could not stop looking at it, my question is when I ordered it i was told it now comes with a trigger guard feature which would cost $695 to have installed on the recently sold and the earlier models and they are fazing them out, they have a few of the older styles left but I'm just not sure if the newer is better in this case or if I like the look of the older style ive been looking at, the new ones have a mag well feature thats kind of like and ar10, it hides most of the magazine as its installed and the older ones show most of the mag, EDM"s web sight shows the old style and only has one close up of the new style receiver with the trigger guard and it's hard to get a good look, you can see it on there web site under products then look at the trigger guard system, also I have been looking at the old style and i sort of have that older style in my head, I was wondering if anyone here has purchased or seen the new style, it don't cost any more if ordered this way but will cost as I said $695 to have installed down the road if I ended up wanting it, if anyone has seen one or heard that other then the appearance it is the way to go I would like to hear your option, i ordered it with the trigger guard and hope i like it as much as the older style, it will deffinitly protect the mag better, other changes from the older ones are it has a 2.5lb trigger pull as the older ones were a 4lb, also the muzzle brake is a shark gill type and no longer the one with the 80 holes on the 30 degree angle, everthing else seems to be the same, ok everyone thanks in advance... Ps. I was just looking at a millet scope bk81006 that is 50 rated, its 6x25x56 and was wondering if anyone had an option or experience with it. Thanks....

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

EDM rifles are very nice. Their new gill style muzzle brake has been out for a while. I have not heard anyone complain about the old Windrunner trigger guard, so you will probably be fine with the older version. That being said, if they will install the newer style for free, it should add to the value of your firearm some.

As for the scope, if you are buying a $5k+ rifle, I would advise you not to skimp on the optics for it. You want to make sure that you have a scope with good eye relief. If it was me, I would be looking at a Leupold Mark 4 as a minimum and would probably settle on a Nightforce 5.5-22X56. I would not be shooting a 50 enough to justify the cost of a S&B or Premier.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hello Rmw, I figured the same thing with the trigger guard, also Bill the owner and one of the staff (Dianna) said I would not regret it and it did seem to protect the mag a little better, I just had been looking at the Old style for so long It was hard for me to change my mind, as for the scope Edm had recomended night force and said if I wanted to spend a little less to look into counter sniper, I did and the reviews for Counter sniper was very poor to put it mildly, I was going to call Edm and tell them not to recomend the CSS brand till they check out some of the reviews, the millett has great reviews and a life time warrenty, but I do understand what you are saying, I just thought if it did not hold up I would have had it repaired or replaced and use it on my ruger mini 14 target or one of my others for a spare, it millett is about $450 on optic planet .com and the reviews say it holds 0, tracks great and performs as well as a scope a few times it's cost, I will look into the Leupold mark 4 as you stated tonight, either way by the end of the year I will go for the money and get the NF or the US optics, I just wanted to budget myself to the end of the year to spend that kind of money, and at the very worst I would use the millett on my ruger mini 14 if it did not hold up to the 50bmg, I know you get what you pay for but the millet seems like it might be a good deal, if you get a chance check out the reviews, I really appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts, I was stressing over getting the trigger guard but you are right that it would probably end up adding to its value. Best regards.....

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Agreed - the Kepplinger is a nice addition. As for the new trigger guard design, I noticed that late last year and honestly I'm not sure what the motivation was for it? One of my only gripes with the Windrunner design is the way the trigger internals can be exposed to dirt and dust because of the large opening made for the safety. So initially I thought the new trigger guard design fixed that problem, but going back and looking at it now, I'm not so sure. If anything, it only appears as though the new design adds a larger magwell and changes from a hinge mag release to a push button AR-style release.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

can anyone advise if changing the barrel and action from a .50cal to a .416 affects the scope after its been zeroed for the .50?

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Yes, between caliber changes there is a POI shift, but it is repeatable. So you just have to take note of the shift and reset your turrets accordingly.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Thanks for the info... i am definitely leaning towards the wind runner BGM!

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hello Reddevil, it was something I did not have in my collection and have wanted for a while, my real interest have always been mostly U.S. , German, some japanese rifles from WW 1 and 2, i have 03's, 1917's, m1 Garands, m1 carbines, k98's, also most military types, ak's, fals, recently picked up a 1919a4 also, i like bolt rifles but love semi's, back in the day i picked up some mini 14 folders, Spas 12 gauge and most of my prebans, I just love to collect firearms, been doing so for over 30+ years, I also have a large collection of bayonets to match most of the rifles and then some, i dont think i will ever satisify my wants, I like to collect but have trouble parting with them, as for the 50 I wanted one just in case of a ban on them down the road so I would have one and for me the time was right, I live in NY but have a house in Jefferson NY where in 7 years I hope to retire, I also have a place in pa that I own with my Father but will most likely will sell soon, that has always been the place I kept everything and did most of my shooting, as for the 50 bmg it's going to take about 16 weeks to be ready, in the mean time I will be looking for a place that will allow me to shoot it, I only have 11 acres in Jefferson and would like a place where I can find a few hundred yard range or more, my kids are all grown and after doing the collage thing and all it was time for me to get a few things I really wanted, the 50 was one of them, I don't think I will get to shoot it as much as I want but I also like the collecting part, these windrunners also seem to hold there value from I have seen on the used market even though I will never sell, what do you collect or like to shoot?

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

You either love shooting .50 's or you don't.
I think it's one of those calibers.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hey Kemo2007, Edm has lowered there prices, they will let the 50 bmg go for $6000 as where they ask $6750 on there web site, not sure for how long but I just delt with them 2 weeks ago, if you call ask for Dianna, she is nice to deal with, I also got to talk to the owner bill for about a half hour, real nice guy and down to earth, no pressure and happy to talk to you, I found everybody over there to be nice to deal with and glad to answer any and all questions, good luck and regards. P.s. It's about $2000 to change cal, that will include bolt and new barrel, .338 lapua or 408....

Bill Ritchie is actually one of the selling points on his rifles, in my opinion. He stands behind every one of them, supports shooters of his rifles and will go the extra mile to help you get the most out of yours.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hey Dogtown, that's for sure, I heard only great things and after talking with him I felt like I knew him for years. Good guy... Regards....

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Yeah, talking with Bill on the phone is a true pleasure. Really great guy and I totally agree that Bill's customer service is a strong selling point. He takes great pride in his machining and engineering.

Just don't compare his stuff to Nemesis or CheyTac and you'll be ok. Bill's design came first and I think a lot of people forget that he sold rights to them for one particular model. The true "Windrunner" is still Bill's original baby.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Thanks for the info STG... Actually, I spoke to her (Dianna) two days ago and she advised that the Windrunner 96 is going for $5500 for the next week or so!... Also, she advised that the 12 month layaway plan on their site is actually unlimited. She told me of a guy who paid off his purchase after 5 years! Talk about flexible. She was very helpful and answered all my questions and then some... Also, I thought the change in caliber also included a mag? Guess I'll have to call back and ask.
Thanks again for the info...

Agree 100%. I had an issue with my windrunner last labor day and left a message for them to call me back after they return. Bill himself called me in less than 30 minutes. Excellent guy to talk to, work with, and trust with your money.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hey STG, do you know if you purchase a conversion kit from say a 50 to a 338 whether or not you can use a magazine for a a 338 or would you have to single feed the rounds?

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

I don't know why you would want to put a .338 conversion in a rifle this heavy. If you are going to be toting around a rifle that alone weighs 34 lbs, why not shoot 50 BMG?

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hey Kemo, I'm not sure, there is no mention of a mag, the conversions only stated a barrel and bolt, good question though, but I think I would have to agree with RMW and would just put the $2000 towards another rifle with a little less weight, I wanted the windrunner in the 50bmg cause I wanted something I did not have to worrie about with such large cal next to my face, lol, and I think weight with the 50 would only help with the recoil, also off the topic for a min I just ordered the millett bk81006, it's a 6x25x56 with a 35mm tube, it's also rated 50 bmg and 338 and has a life time warrenty, if it fails I will have it replaced and put it on one of my other target/sniper rifles with a little less recoil, it has great reviews though, either way I'm putting $$$ aside for a US Optic's for next year, if the Marines use USO's is the way I would like to go, I will post a review after I get the millett, I have to call Bill or Dianna after the weekend and will ask about the mag, ok Kemo talk to you soon....

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Thanks STG.... That was great! Thanks for all your advise... Makes sense on weight issue... Look forward to getting more input soon

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Thanks... Makes a lot of sense regarding the weight issue

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

I just got one of these myself as an impulse buy, but not sure if Im gonna keep it. Very well built. Have you seen the rotating bipod setup for these? Its shown on EDM's website, but Elite Iron is the company that is making them now.

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Haven't seen that set up.... Why wouldn't you keep it?

Re: Edm windrunner newest model

Hey STG,

I bought an m96 back in August from Knesek. It had the new trigger guard installed from EDM. It gives it more of an "AR" feel. I don't have any experience with the old setup so I can't tell you which is better. But the new style works for me and I think looks great.
So far it is a great shooting rifle. I have yet to run match ammo through it but it does really good with mil surplus API so I can only imagine what it will do with match. I have taken it out to 850yds and can keep it on my 2'x2' steel plate with every shot.
As for your scope choice. Millet will be a decent choice while you save up for the USO. A friend has the Millet LRS-1 on his 82a1 and it does excellent for the price. Me on the other hand, I went for the Premier 5-25x56. I will never buy another scope as long as I live. The quality of the glass is unbelievable.
If you have any questions regarding anything about it feel free to PM me and I will try and answer any questions you might have. You are getting an excellent rifle!

Joe
