Might not be accurate to the inherent sloppiness of shotguns, BUT, brass casings that were thicker (think RMC) could be done with much hotter loads depending on the action. If the shooter was ok with single feeding you could seat saboted bullets way beyond case length giving a ton of powder capacity.

The question is still...why?

I think the trick would be a lighter finned sabot.
Kind of like a anti armor projectile.

While your at it make it a tracer. Would be highly entertaining.

NO point other than the fun of it... And thats good enough for me...

This is certainly not an exercise in practical shooting but rather because you just gotta try stuff like this. Hell if it was practical why are there people shooting .22 LR at some distances considered to be ridiculous. If we were practical with stuff who would have ever tried to throw rocks across the pond and hit old Coke bottles, or hitting your buddy with your sling shot standing in opposite ends of the football field. Only caution here is that if the range session starts with "hold my beer and watch this shit" you might want to rethink the range exercise. Have fun and as I was told from a very young age "you won't know unless you put it down range".
Keep us informed on how you get this done.

So far, he has hit at 633yds, also, he missed but he threw dirt on an 8in plate at 750yds several times. It took about 2 days for the slug to get there. Fun but the slugs we shot are about $4.50 a piece.

I happen to be the owner of the Savage 212, and the trigger man behind the 633y, and as unbelievable as it may sound it happened not because im out to prove anything, just for fun and awsome to talk about.

After seeing what you can do with a shotgun, I think I will stay out of the way when you start shooting the .338 Norma.
If you do some special shit with the new rifle I can say it is because of me and ride you like a mule for months to come!

There's nothing wrong at all with having a little fun doing thing's that aren't very popular, 1000 yard hits, don't let anybody tell you it can't be done. I'd fasten the steel plate tipped back at the top to accept a incoming round at about 45 degree's. or greater. Figure out the dope and have fun.

Well I now have my longrange gun finished and am about to get a good load worked up, but ill never forget the longrange slugging and who knows ill probably bring it along just for fun this summer anyway. Its just as fun to hit a steel plate at 633 with a twelve guage as it is to hit 2600 with a 338 norma, well maybe lol

Red Jacket Custom shop could probably whip you up something pretty sweet for this application. I am thinking a Mossberg 935 with a 100 MOA picatinny rail running the length of the rib?

We like to shoot. And do so often.
They could mount a shotgun to a remington 700 scope rail and make some good TV.
Remember this was for shits and giggles till we friggin hit it!
Video may be the way!
Remember this was for FUN! No animals involved!
My longest hit on steel 1400 yards.
My longest deer kill about 75 yards!
Will look into the video to settle the stuff for the non believers.
Still a bunch of fun!

As crazy as this may seam. I remember reading in a Very High Power Magazine in 2000 about Skip Talbot and a friend shooting at "The Rock" at 2 miles, and thought Wow, who but Skip could have done such a feat. Well, I'm know where near a Skip Talbot, and never will be, but I am hopeing to soon be knocking on the 3,000 yard door. So if this is nothing more than some of us having fun, maybe, just maybe, it'll inspire someone else down the road to try something they though was imposible, and take shooting to a whole other level.

My shoulder started hurting the instant I read the title of this thread.

I have a 20 ga break action slug gun. I'd think the higher pressure needed to push a slug out that far would have to be more than plastic, but I have no idea.

What kind of load are you testing to get 1000 yards?

I believe we are getting closer to making this happen. We first have to get a scope that has ALOT of adjustment. If anyone is willing to donate $, please feel free.

Have you guys chronograph those loads? Have you weighed those projectiles? It almost look like API rds. Anyhow the BC should be between .65-.70. Also optic choices with lots of adjustment would be the sightron SIII straight power scopes have 150 moa internal adjustments and another choice would be the SWFA SS line of straight power scopes.

Well as much as it pained me, I left behind the ole sluggun today, and got down to some serious range, 2030yds with my Vestals Custom Gunsmithing 338 norma mag! Awesome day my friends.

You know, I through dirt on a small steel at 750, several times, with no more dope in my scope and even less of the 5 dollar slugs, but maybe with a custom 60 MOA base! Might just have to save up my pennies, or get Winchester to sponcer me lol!

Iv'e heard good things about the savage 220, but it would really have to be a nail driver to beat my 12g! Only advantage I could see is, lesser recoil; that being said, less recoil would help with long range accuracy, and consistancy!

Na, Redjacket would charge you more than the whole outfit then market it as their donation to the long range slug world lol! I can get one made a little cheaper than that route! EGW will do it and made my zero cant thats on it now, but they are a bit pricey, since it's a one off custom!

Many years ago I wanted an M79. This is close as I got. Gunsmith thought I was an idiot wanting mauser sights on a $50 shotgun. Kicks like a mule with slugs.

I probably won't be contracting Red Jacket for any of my builds, but I also won't be throwing any stones at them, either.

Diff'rent Strokes...

I figure a Savage 220, a Ken Farrell 30MOA base, a Tasco VAR624X42M with 75+MOA of adjustment. Could make for some interesting shots.

Might even try tearing down some 20ga Sabot loads and substituting heavier .458's with relatively higher BC's.

I know that thread. That dude is my kind of guy.

I'm a pretty decent shot and I studied university level mathematical analysis. I dig shit like this, and I'd offer to do the math if I weren't so busy (and rusty, as much as I hate to admit).

But today, I think there are programs out there that you can enter the variables into and they'll spit out what you need. A six pack of beer and a few inquisitive questions at any university math or physics dept. will end with a shitload of data though, easier cheaper and faster than a program. Just a heads up.

Some guy came in asking for a free version of Maathematica, an online math program and UW ended up writing SAGE. I almost helped on that project but my classes got too deep.

FYI, NASA does shit more impressive than this all the time. The Curiosity Rover was equivalent of a "golf ball launched from LA and perched on top of the Great Pyramid --twice, once with the rocket and once with the lander"!!! They are doing the exact same thing just with different variables that yeild different results. Technically, you can launch that damn slug from your roof and send it to Mars too if you have the know how (and cash to get it off the ground, there is an equation for that too, cost vs. thrust). The difference between them and us is they actually do the math every time and we evoke a bit of art. Nothing wrong with that, I prefer "hard art" to "hard science" in some cases.

The 12ga. from hell is badass, that guy is sick. But there is a guy online that has consitently shot two 55gal. drums with a Savage .223 and a cheap scope --at 1mile. Long Range Shooting.com? I forget. So maybe the "Savage" on the stock really does do something...

We used Winchester Supreme slugs. We tried 300gr and 350gr slugs. Hitting 633yds was easy. 750yds was tougher as we maxed out the scope elevation and had to hold below bottom reticle. Threw dirt on 750yds a few times. The scope base has zero cant. We are going to go with custom 60moa base which should give us the needed cant to get to 1000yd target. It`s something different to do. Hitting 1000yds is so easy with rifle but with slug gun, it`s a different world.

203 sights come to mind. Or something adjustable where you could mount some sort of glass to. Aiming it might be a little weird since it would hang to one side. Just my two cents.
