So I have a Winchester Model 70 in 7mm Mag. I need to know if its a pre-64. I came across a site that will tell you the date by typing in the serial number, but I dont know the credibility of the site. The date came back as a 1958 model. I want to start building this rifle, so Im wanting some info on it before I start the build. I will take some pics and post them. The rifle is in VERY good condition. Its got a black synthetic stock. The serial number is G2321350

Ok so here is the pics. I just got into precision shooting, and realized that this has been sitting in the closet for years. I would like to build it and have another toy to last a lifetime.

Still a nice rifle for whatever purpose you desire.

Ok, thanks for the replies fellas. I figured it wasnt a pre64. When the website said Mfg in 1958 a red flag was raised in my mind. So regardless of year, is this still a good model to build up? Whats yall suggestions?

    Re: Winchester Model 70 date.

I have built a rifle off the same action. Shoots and functions perfectly. Don't hesitate to do something with yours. With having a magnum bolt, I'd suggest staying with the 7mag or possibly going to the 300WM.

    Re: Winchester Model 70 date.

Yea its gonna stay 7mag. Im thinking a McMillan A4 or A5 stock. Aftermarket barrel (Not sure which maker) Leupold Mk4 Or Nightforce and many other mods. Any suggestions?

    Re: Winchester Model 70 date.

I would guess the 90s also, that would make it a USRA's Winchester.

The last of the post 64 serial numbers was G1,525,523 made in 1981.

That was about the time that Winchester started making Featherwights again, and USRA continued. I got one of the last Featherweights made by Winchesters, a 257, G1,505,xxx. Then got one of the FN Featherweights.

I only have one USRA Winchester, or action, I made my 1000 yard 300 WM Match rifle out of it. Nothing wrong with USRAs.

I have lots of Winchesters, from pre '64 through the FN Model 70s. I like them all, although I may go to Hell for this, but I think the Pre 64s are over rated. Never had a problem with the push feeds. I find they are every bit as accurate.

If I would have to pick, I'd say the new FN Model 70s are the best of the lot.

Good call. I don't understand why 7mag gets no respect around here, it's a fantastic cartridge thats easier to shoot and flatter than 300WM.

Thatsa fine rifle to build from, and a bit easier/cheaper too, as it does not require the extractor slot to be milled into the barrel tennon.

    Re: Winchester Model 70 date.

Yea I love the 7mag cartridge as well. Is there a (Go-to Guy) for Winchester rifles? I want to send it off and get it worked but I since Im pretty new to this type of shooting I dont have any contacts.

    Re: Winchester Model 70 date.

There are lots of reputable smiths that can do the work you need. Mine was done at GAP, but I'm local to them which made my choice an easy one. Check out APA, LA Precision, SAC, and others.
