Will be shooting steel from 100- 1,000 yards.

Looking at buying a rangefinder.

My 3 choices are:

1. Zeiss Victory PRF

2. Leica 1600

3. Swarovski laser guide.

I have looked at the reviews of all 3 and am as confused as I was at the start.

I guess they all have their pro's and con's.

I was going with # 3 and read that the Swarovski remains the standard by which other long distance rangefinders are measured, however the only thing that botered me was that many have said that I have read that the the electronic circle you use to spot on a target is huge.

Being I am going to shoot at steel plates around 18X36 I'm not sure if the circle would cover all of the target.

I am looking for those of you that have used both.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I bought the Swaro last week and I'm pretty happy with it. The circle doesn't bother me, what does bother me is it's hard to read if it's bright out. It is very accurate but as you have probably read, you have to hold it steady when ranging smaller targets at a distance.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I have a Zeiss and am really happy with it so far. That said, I've never looked through the Swaro. I likely won't buy another Leica range finding device again, after my problems with a couple different CRF 1200s.

Swaro or Zeiss, how much you want to spend? Can't go wrong with either I don't think.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I figured that to get a good one the cost would be over $600.00 so to get a good one I'm willing to spend a grand.

Not going over 1000 yds so the Swaro seemed like over kill after I thought about it although I haven't ruled it out.

Fisky-As far as problems with the Leica, would you want to comment on what kind ?

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

the swaro glass is quite good.
the reticle is large but has never been a problem. you center the target in the reticle. you don't have to put the whole reticle on the target, which would be impossible on a small target.

i've never had teh reticle wash out in bright light, however it is finicky about eye placement. if your eye is up/down/left/right too far, it does make the reticle and display dimmer

i've used my swaro a LOT over several years. it was FANTASTIC the first couple years, but then it broke and i had to send it back. it worked ok when it got back. last 8 months or so it has gotten very flakey and often fails to give me readings at even half the distance i used to get. no idea what the problem is or how to fix it at the moment.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I have a Leica 1600 that is great for my needs. I have the tripod adapter as well so it makes it easier holding it steady for those longer range readings.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

well. i guess they use a ring because at a certain distance, the laser diameter will be large anyway - no reason to have a fine cross-hair then.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I have a Leica 1600 as well and I was just out in my backyard playing around. I couldn't believe it when I pushed the range button and I was able to measure out to 1901. It was mounted on a tripod; I think it has to be held very steady to get anything past 1400 yards. But 1901 is way past the 1600 they advertise and this is off of trees. Plus the unit can tell me what atmospheric pressure is, temp and angle. I wish it told me humidity but you can usually guess close enough on that.

I made a 3x5 card with a table to convert from the units the Leica gives (PSI) to inches of mercury. I could email it to anybody that wants it.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

Ordered a Leica 1600 yesterday.

I spoke to the fellow that I bought it from and he told me that yes Leica did have some problems with their units some 6 months ago but now the are GTG.

He assured me that he stands by their product andif I wasn't happy with it to send it back for a replacement or back to Leica to be looked at.

I was a little taken back because I just assumed (you know what happens when you do) that the Leica was manufactured in Germany. The glass is made in Germany however they are assembled in Portugal.

I would rather buy ones made inthe USA however after reading different reports on the ones that are was disappointed.

I was hoping in the near future that Premier or US optics would get into this bussiness but after some calls it won't be in my lifetime.

The Leica will be here on Tuesday so standby for a no BS report.

I have used military ones however they are a different animal.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

What's the deal with all the Swarovski range finders in the for sale column? I was thinking about buying one and i've seen at least 4 in the last two weeks. They look good, and Swaro has a good reputation, but i'm wondering why people seem to be getting rid of them? Are they coming out with something new or is it just one of those forum cycles where stuff you haven't seen in a while pops up and then there's a whole bunch of the same thing for sale?

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I think all the Swaro guys are buying the Bushnell units. Just a guess, but I almost bought the Swaro, but thought I would give the 1600 elite since it was less than 1/2 the price of the Swaro. I am very happy I made the decision I did.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

or they go for the new swaro bino+range that supposedly comes out soon.

man, if they wouldn't be that expensive ...

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I have both the Swaro and the new Bushnell 1600 elite and the Swaro is still the best.

Didn't think they would ever play in the same sand box.

I've got a second hand Swaro 8 x 30 coming. I'll let ya'll know how it does ASAP. I bet I'm gonna love it since I'm going from a Nikon 800 to the Swaro. I'm gonna be pissed if the Swaro doesn't perform for more than 5 years!

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I'm pretty happy with my swaro but I need to get a tripod since I shake so bad. It's funny to see how far off my ranging abilities are and it has hurt my brother in laws feelings.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

O.K. here is finally the no BS report on the Leica 1600.

I had ordered it on 10-1-11 and waited in anticipation for the big brown truck to drive down my street. When it arrived and I opened the box I was very much impressed at how small and light(7 oz) it was. When they say pocket range finder they mean it fitting into my standard shirt pocket.

I read the instruction manual quickly changed the functions to what I use with the menu which was simple and easy to use

I went to where I shoot on a regular basis and I no sooner got out of the truck and a doe came out into the field some distance away. I have shot a lot in my 60+ years and I figured it was about 7oo yards away. I sat down so that I could lean up against the back tire and rest my elbows on my knees and hit the button, 801 yards. I hit it again and got the same result, 801. I hit it again and got 802.

The clarity of the 1600 is clear with the LED read out easy to read. The beam divergence is tight allowing one to range through trees without much difficulty.

I was out for about 40 minutes The day was very bright but no sunlight and I ranged items from the doe to an old car, trees etc with repeatable results.

Took it out the next day and it was overcast and had the same results ranging out to 1834 yards with use of a tripod and holder for the 1600. It did have a hard time the first few times I tried at that distance giving me 3 small lines instead of a read out but I figured at that range I could clearly understand it being it was only intended to go out to 1600.

The thing I noticed is that after about 800 yards you DO need the holder which will cost you an additional $100.00 + shipping but well worth it. I attempted to use it without the holder/tripod and was unable to because my shaking was magnified by the 7x power of the RF.

Bright sunlight- another story here, Although it ranged and was adequate it didn’t do as well as the past two days and I wasn’t impressed giving it a grade of a B even though the sun was facing me. It took more attempts the further I tried to range and there were some things at extended ranges (greater then 800 yards) I ranged prior that it just would not pick up. I would think that after a fresh blanket of snow in the morning that it would yield the same results if not worse given how bright the sun makes looking at the snow.

Low light the same day and I was impressed getting out to 1500 yards without a problem.

Recovery time was not as fast as I had hoped for and I had to pause longer then I thought figuring it took about 2 seconds which isn’t that long when one thinks about it.

The main button that one presses to obtain a range is located toward the operator followed by a smaller and less friendly one that when used gives in order the angle, temperature and barometer. These measurements are displayed after what I believed was about ¾ of a second. Again the second button takes some getting use to and I believe Leica should at least look at what can be done to make it more user friendly IMHO.

I did not get into the ballistic functions that this model will allow and it is not what I bought it for instead using the numbers that the 1600 gives me to plug into my ballistic calculator.

I recently spoke to a gentleman who was unimpressed with that function telling me that the figures it gave didn’t mesh with his. You might have different thoughts after using it and it may be great for you

Bottom line is that the Leica 1600 is a keeper and I’m happy with it even though it is somewhat costly.

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

thanks for the great info. i've been weighting my options for a while and its good to see some feedback on the Leica

Re: Rangefinder- need suggestions

I'm seeing the Leica 1600 discounted by up to $150 right now. I assume they are clearing stock to make room for the new 1600-B.

I don't own either right now, but am very interested in how well the ballistics software works in the new model (claimed to work at 880 yds max). More for a ballisticly challenged friend, but it would be nice if it would work for some or most of my needs as well, since I don't have a smart phone. Even a reliable air pressure reading would be handy for me.
