Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

SSS makes a smooth barrel nut wrench and because they make the only one they think they can charge $45 for it which is completely absurd and getting a hold of them can be nearly impossible. I have a couple slotted nuts laying around and don't plan on ever using a smooth nut again. Is there a way I can cut the smooth nut off and avoid their price gouging?

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

I've heard of people putting the gun in a vise and using a pipe wrench to pull off the barrel nut, you can do that and replace it with the slotted nut.

My Dad has one of those.

He'd be willing to sell it to ya.
Didn't work worth a shit, but defense to the wrench, the threads on his barrel had all kinds of bluing salts in them.
A barrel vise and pipe wrench are your friend. Just remember to put some kroil on there a day or two before, clean the excess off and have at it.
It is also impossible to torque the smooth nut correctly.

I don't care about saving the smooth nut. If I have to chew it off I will. I have no idea why they switched it in the first place.

Rabid squirrel?

Yeh, the smooth nut looks cool, but is a pain. Pipe wrench it while the barrel is in a vice being held by notched 2x4's

How about rabid raccoons? I'd rather they chew up my barrel nut than my garbage.

I'll head to the hardware store tomorrow and try a pipe wrench. I've also heard of some guys using a strap wrench but this seems like an easier method if you don't need to re use the nut.

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

grind a couple flat spots on the nut and use a wrench

That's what I was thinking.

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

Pipe wrench will do it just fine no need to start grinding stuff

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

Adjustable spanner will work if you have one. Or a Pipe wrench like everyone else said.

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

I would suggest at least a 18" pipe wrench, if you go that route. A 2 footer might be better. Mine was on pretty damn tight. Either a bigger wrench, or add some heat...

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

You can cut them off with a Dremmel but it is a little more risky than the pipe wrench. You don't want to bump the threads of your barrel with the dremmel...obviously. But I have heard that once you get 3/4 the way through the nut it snaps because of the immense torque its under.

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

24" pipe wrench got the job today, and better than I thought. I could have sanded and resprayed the nut if I wanted to re use it but it's on the tree lawn for tomorrow's garbage.

Sidenote, the rifle is now a 243(my first). Barrel is 1:10". Factory plinking ammo suggestions?

Re: Can I cut off my smooth Savage barrel nut?

I use to use federal powershok for plinking in my 243 when it was 8 bucks per 20. If your looking for better stuff I think HSM ammo makes a good variety of ammo at a good price. Their match ammo shoots very good.

you can cut anything off.

with the right tool for the subject material anything is possible.

Im planning to take a pipe wrench to mine soon... much easier and quiet.... unless i hit a finger or something and start cussing.

I used the pipe wrench with Brownell's action wrench and it broke just fine. I'm sure with a bench vise it would be even easier.
