The Savage 110 BA or the Armalite AR 30 both in 338 Lapua.

Re: The better rifle?

yeah dumb question i know but the purpose will be hunting. this will be my first rifle in this catagory so the more someone could tell me about ANYTHING the better. i own an AK, a Glock, post ban and pre ban AR's and one Beowulf 50 cal AR. i don't know much about the long range "sniper" rifles. the reason why i have narrowed it down to these two is basically price and i figured Armalite is a name to be trusted but i don't know much about Savage.

Re: The better rifle?

If it's for hunting i'd get the 110 FCP HS over the BA in a Savage.

zombies have been known to refuse to stay dead when hit by something wimpy like a winmag

seriously, .338 lapua is a great cartridge, but it would be difficult to imagine a hunting scenario that would favor it over other alternatives

Re: The better rifle?

I think I read about some people hunting Alaska brownies with 338 LM

Re: The better rifle?

Walking through the woods and up and down hills with an AR-30 will be a great workout.

Better you than me!

I suggest you save your money and buy a Sako TRG-42 in .338 Lapua Magnum. Its a great long range rifle that actually was designed around the 338LM cartridge and is light enough to hunt with. In my opinion, a much better selection for your chosen activities.

Re: The better rifle?

To hunt with either of those id need a goat or a llama to pack it around for me. Have you hoisted either of those rifles? I agree if you insist on the cartridge then go TRG.

Re: The better rifle?

Yeah the TRG is 11 3/4 pounds and the AR 30 is 12.3 pounds. Not much difference. so out of the 3 does the Savage come in third place? That's really what I'm getting at. I know nothing about the Savage company. I don't wanna buy a lemon.

Re: The better rifle?

If your heart is stuck on 338LM I agree with the others and save up and get a TRG 42. That gun was built to shoot that round.

Have you completely ruled out all other cartridges? 338LM seems a little over kill to me for 95% or north american hunting.

That is just my 2 pennies.

Re: The better rifle?

The .338 LM would be a great caliber for long range hunting. However, if you are going to be packing a rifle on your back while hunting, you may prefer something like a Tikka T3 in 300 WSM or 300 WM.

If you are set on a .338 LM, I would consider the Savage 110 FCP HS over the ones you have listed. It is nearly half the price of a TRG 42 and will be a fine rifle to get you into long range shooting/hunting.

While some will tell you to bypass the Savage and go straight to the Sako. If you were looking at the Sako, some would say forget the Sako and go straight to the AI.

I personally went with a DTA SRS so I could shoot multiple calibers out of the same platform. I have been very happy with it and would recommend it to you if you were looking for a rifle in that price range.

All of the tactical Savage rifles that I have shot have been tack drivers. If my price range was $1,500 for a .338, I would not hesitate to go with the Savage 110 FCP HS in .338 LM.

Best of luck with your decision.

Re: The better rifle?

Yea, 338LM does seem like overkill unless you're hunting those two-legged mountain goats across the pond and wanna keep outa their reach. But for those already mentioned I would rate them as TRG42-110BA-AR30. The Savage 110 FCP HS in 338LM would deff be a good choice as well. My .02

300 win mag is absolutely enough cartridge for any NA game - so is the 308 with proper bullets and placement at reasonable ranges

there is a lot better justifications for these high performance cartridges when what you are hunting can shoot back

Re: The better rifle?

So what exactly will you be hunting, and at what distances? 338 is just a tad overkill for a lot of species that we hunt.

Re: The better rifle?

I had a grizzly track on top of mine a couple years back ,,, i now subscribe to the "There is no such thing as being over-gunned" theory of hunting. HIs foot was at least 2x the size of mine...

Just sayin....

Re: The better rifle?

a good 300 win would be a more practical tool for learning to shoot long range.a big 338 is a special tool for extreme long range or an application requiring a lot of horsepower but less than a 50 cal.

Re: The better rifle?

I'm pretty sure I don't want to pack that pig around "just in case I see a bear". Thats why we have hand-cannons, slugs, and nice brush guns. The .300WM is by far a better option, as others have said. If properly equipped, it can exceed a "good" shooters abilities. He really needs to elaborate on what he's hunting and what distances.
