No pic of the target sorry.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

wow really sorry to hear about that on your rifle. I'm a complete noob and my work looks 1000x better than that when i threaded my bolt knob by hand

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

How can a gunsmith not know how to cut threads?!? Imagine if he did that installing someone's barrel. Of course it probably would have fallen out of the action before it left the shop.

My rifle is at a local smith right now being threaded for an RWS brake too. He gets good reviews and I trust he can do it, but now you got me scared! I'm checking that thing before I leave the parking lot.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

If the brake slides on that far without issue, and the threads in the brake still look clean(and they do) just how much did that guy undercut the O.D.? Dang. And like someone says, looks like the ran the tool in the back side turning in reverse, and sent it towards the tailstock. Did he have the brake in hand to test fit?

LMFAO!!! I almost spit my Jack/Coke all over my keyboard when I read that!

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

I'm betting I know who your Smith was as I recognize this brake that flew d/range on you. I'd be so mad that I'd need some serious couch time if that happened to me.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

Wonder what the vapor trail looked like on the brake? Just kidding, hope you get this taken care of by another smith.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

Any updates on this OP? I'm dying to hear what the smith has to say to justify all of this.

Your "gunsmith" ,if he used a lathe and I doubt it,ran a non roller steady rest there probably. It has contacts made of bronze or brass and the part really runs on a film of oil. The more precise type uses ball bearings and I always made a custom sleeve for any barrel I did. That way the finish is not damaged.

In response to another poster about how could a gunsmith not know how to cut threads. You would be amazed! The vast majority of gunsmiths are competent at replacing parts, mounting scopes and small repairs. They are a far cry from those that can do good machine work. Most of your smiths that can have a heavy machinist background. I was a machinist for quite a while before I started doing builds.

I am waiting to hear how the poi bullet vs, brake. Might be worth screwing it back on to add a little extra punch for those close shots.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

I took the rifle and brake to another smith. He said it looked like the threads were just under sized on the barrel, he said the brake is in good shape and can be used again. Then I took it to the guy that did it the first time. He humbly asked me to to give him the chance to make it right. I did not want to give him a second chance... He was almost begging me to give him a chance to fix the issue. I told him ok. But take it out and shoot it before you call me when it is done... He Called me the next afternoon saying it was done. So I went and checked it out. it looked much better. He showed me the half empty box of shells test fired with. I thanked him and went on my way.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

Very sad to see hacks try to be machinists. I'm cutting suppressor details on some rifles this weekend and looking at that makes me ill. And for the record, i don't disengage the lead screw once i start threading. I've had them not engage properly even being carefull. Takes no more time and always works.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

Is it just me, or are the original threads tapered?

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

damn....i detest east-over shoe gun butchers like one class 3 dealer who didnt thread my ak but welded on the break like i told him to do ! 75 rounds later .............down range it flew and seeing what was done ,i was pissed off too ...damn it ,do the job right !sorry i hate to hear of other people's troubles over the word - DETAIL , it counts !!!

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

I took the gun out and shot it today. Everything went good. 5 shots through the chronograph. average fps was 2962. With Hornady superformance 162gr SST. 6th shot 425 yards. 7th shot 625 yards. 8th shot 702 yards. on random rocks. I was glad to see everything working the way it should.

and then playing

He is breathing hard... he ran out and placed the target and ran back as fast as he could then i shot it. ha ha

I'm pretty impressed with the 115 yards. That's a long way to throw a muzzle brake. The threads must have been very undersized.

It's just as well it happened, because if it hadn't instantly failed, you would certainly have had a brake that loosened constantly.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

The man made a mistake. You being the bigger man gave him a chance to fix it. Congrats to you for being so gracious when I know you were probable plenty pissed off. The man fixed his mistake, I'm sure he will never make that same mistake again. You showed alot of class in the way you handled yourself. Again Congadulations.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

I would like to know who it was as well even in a pm I would rather not take something there

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

I would chalk this up to an isolated error. I would be pissed too though. But its not like the smith scoffed it off, or back pedaled. He was given a second chance when frankly I would not have. I may have had a one on one and told him I will be taking my work else where. But at this point, smearing his name on the web is pointless. I dunno if you researched your area for smiths or their reputations, but I would ask around and see if others had similar issues. If thats the case, then I would give a word of caution. If you hear of a place plagued with hack work and screw ups AFTER you go there, thats one thing.

Like I said earlier, I would not have brought it back to him. Like anything else, if your mechanic cant fix your car, use someone else. I cant fathom, for the life of me, why people dont learn from the first time. You took a chance the second time, glad it worked out. As far as I can tell, this issue has been settled, and unless you know that he is known for shoddy work, I would leave it be.

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

Something isn't adding up here still.

-He cut threads too short on your barrel.
-The brake just slides on.
-He did not cut the barrel down?

Does the brake unscrew? Unless he cut the barrel down to recut the threads at the correct depth, it seems the only way to "fix" this is to JB Weld the brake on?

Re: Muzzel break blew off on the first shot!

You handled it much better than most would have. Great job
