DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

Ok guys I am thinking about having Short Action make me up a custom barrel for my covert. So what caliber besides the .308 I have would make great sense to add to it? I know DTA offers the 300Wm and 338LM in it with 18" barrels but I am not sure 18" can use that much powder or maybe it can and I am wrong.

Ok any how what caliber would you do? 6.5x47, 6mmXC, etx. Criteria, I want it to magazine and I don't want to be making wildcat brass. If it would magazine I would do a 6BR but probably too short in OAL. Other thing is 16-18" in barrel length. Just a thinking man's session on calibers that have been done on the DTA platform or should work really cool theoretically speaking. Thanksl

Well, considering that a lot of the 6.5 cartridges need approx 26" barrels to get their performance advantage, I wouldn't run one with a short barrel. Of course, there's no reason why you can't run a full length barrel in a Covert.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

I'm pondering the same thing. So far my focus has narrow to 300WM or 30-06 with a 22" barrel. Not sure I want to mess with getting the mags to work with the 06. 06 benefit is it uses the 308 bolt. Decisions decisions.

My thought was to look for something that would get up and going where my 16" 308 starts to fall off.

Both will smack steel with pretty good authority.
I'll be watching the input here as well

Hope this helps!

Does the 30-06 really offer that much over a 308, especially in a 16-18" barrel?

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

.33 blk would be cool, but they don't offer a mag or a bolt face for it I believe.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

I was wondering if a 338 Ruger short magnum would work, not sure about the bolt face though if its .532 like the WM or not. 6mm BR keeps bang me on the head for somethin gon the other side of the 308 and if SAC gets that .223 conversion done then thats a must buy for the Covert.

No '06 its too close to the 308. Now if the mags worked..a 280AI would be interesting.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

I just looked up the 338 RCM for specs it is .532....Win Mag bolt will work with it now if it will fit in the 308 mags....problem solved.

Ok taking the caliper to my mag and measuring it looks like it will fit. Mag and I go to Cabelas tomorrow to make sure. This might just rock.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

I have a Mag bolt face 4=sale.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

Seems to me that trying to get more performance than your .308 offers by going up in caliber, but staying with the shorter barrel is going to defeat the purpose of going up in caliber. Diminishing returns. The bigger cartridges work well with the longer barrels period. Put a nice length 338 Lapua Magnum on there. It will still be shorter than a regular rifle. Just my .02 cents.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

steeler I have a full size DTA with two 338 conversions for it. I am looking for something that won't lose too much performance in a Covert type barrel. The RCMs were designed for a shorter barrel. DTA sells a 300WM and a 338LM coversion with 18" barrels for the Covert already.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

Do a 7 mag with a 30in plus break barrel. Shoot 189 cat customs at stuff in the next state over with a gun the same size as a 24 in stick. Thats what I would do if I was wealthy enough to own a DTA. How nasty would that be!

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

I would go 7WSM if you want the best performance put a 20" barrel on

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

Nothing wrong with the 7WSM, but I only own one 7mm in the house and thats my Rem 700 Titanium in 7mmRM for up high hunting with flat lander old fart lungs.

If it can be done the 338RCM with a 250 gr Lapua Lockbase would be a cool combo. Lord knows I have enough 250LB put back.

Re: DTA Covert Caliber Choices What Direction?

The 18" 338 LM is still going to have some range and is still going to hit super hard inside 1,000 yards.

I think the covert w/ an 18" 338 LM would make a pretty sweet hard hitting brush gun.
