So my son bought a GSG and it seems OK but yesterday he had several light strike failures. I searched here and on the AR-15 forum and found a lot of posts and info related to this but they are all from 3 to 4 years ago. Sounds like GSG has fixed most of the issues folks were having and my kid's gun is new, made last October. Any body have any input? Is this gun just a POS?

Re: GSG-5 issues

Had a Gen 1 and had fun for several thousand rounds. Then had
failure to feed
fail to fire.(light strikes) Sent it in 3 times and still had
same stuff happening. They replaced the bolt and worked on the trigger. But still lite strikes.
I just gave up and sold it.
Check to see if the barrel is loose .
I think the gun is over engineered.
Its a fun gun . But not dependable in the long run for .22 fun.

Re: GSG-5 issues

the gsg is somewhat fussy on ammo too. what you running in it? i have had one for about 3 years, havent shot it a lot but enough and havent had these light strike issues yet.... I run cci blazers in mine and its been good so far after about 2k rounds. also, is it gunked up on the internals? could just need some lube or a little cleaning.

Re: GSG-5 issues

I definitely concur with the "over engineered" statement. It just seems too complicated, especially the bolt and carrier. To many little screws to come loose and a real pain to clean. At any rate, I blasted the crap out of it with a can of brake cleaner and blew it out with my air compressor, then lubed it really well with Mobil 1. Will see how it shoots this weekend. He has been using CCI Tactical and Federal bulk pack ammo. I did compare the firing pin length from the bolt face with my S&W MP-15-22 and a Savage .22 and it seems to me that the pin on the GSG is a wee bit shorter.

Re: GSG-5 issues

Well my kid shot his GSG5 yesterday after I cleaned and lubed it and had the same problem with light strikes about every 4 or 5 rds. Guess we'll have to send it in.

Re: GSG-5 issues

So much for "quality German manufacturing" my azz! Had some spare time today and tore down the bolt assembly on my kid's gun. The firing pin looked and felt like a freaking file. Polished it up with some 400 grit emory paper and re-blued it, will see how it works. These things may be assembled in Germany, but I bet parts are made in Chinastan.

Re: GSG-5 issues

Had one same problem. worked good for a couple thousand rounds and then all kinds of problems. Most annoying was light primer strikes. looked everything over real good and could not figure out why. Sent it back to ATI they replaced bolt, and recoil springs worked for about 300 rds and then all hell broke loose again. It really seems like a hammer issue because it just doesn't feel or sound like the hammer hits very hard at all. Any way kept it around for a couple years as a trainer, yep a FTF, FTE, and failure to fire trainer. it was a sure bet it would do all three at least twice every mag. Taught a few people how to clear a failure with it. Couple months ago I sold it and picked up another S&W MP15-22. My original 15-22 has approx 12,000 rds through it and has less than a dozen failures. Put 1150 rds through it Saturday with not one malfunction. The new one seems just as reliable. Only lost $25 on the GSG so lesson learned. Bad part is I really liked the feel of the gun.

Re: GSG-5 issues

I am advising my son to send it in to ATI to at least give them a shot (no pun intended) at fixing it. If it still craps out, sell it and buy a S&W. My MP-15-22 runs like a top as well.

Re: GSG-5 issues

sell it and get a sw 15-22. ive had both mine was a gen one. piece of shit right out of the box had it for ever and just recently sold it. my 15-22 has never fucked up it runs like a top. most reliable 22 i own other than bolt guns

Re: GSG-5 issues

So my son got his GSG-5 back from the dealer who supposedly had their smith go over it for the light strike issues and they said he lubed it and "tuned" the extractor. WTF? does that have to do with what seems to be a firing pin issue?

Nothing worse than a gun that doesn't go bang

The only POS jam-o-matic I've ever had like this was a Walther P22 when they 1st came out...traded that in real quick after my first range trip
