How many people around here are die-hard pheasant hunters? Do you hunt birds locally or travel to shoot roosters?

somewhat local

Re: Pheasants

I've hunted upland game, and waterfowl, my whole life. I'm military so return home to Idaho at least once a year. Ring necks are abundant in southern Idaho. Beautiful bird and great hunting.

Re: Pheasants

cleaned about 3000 chinese chickens last year while helping guide. at this point i like running my dogs more than shooting them.

Re: Pheasants

I hunt them a fair amount. Traveling 5 hours to my normal hunting grounds. I almost exclusively hunt wild birds in KS, occasionally in CO and MO. SD is on my bucketlist for sure! KS pheasants had a hard year last year from the drought, so hopefully this year we'll see more favorable conditions for them. Last season our take was about 1/4 of what it normally is, to put it in perspective. Still fun none-the-less. I'll add some photos later.

Re: Pheasants

A group of my buddies and I killed 60+ of them a few weeks ago along with about 50 bullfrogs. Prime rib, pheasant nuggets and frog legs, made for a hell of a night of eating.

Re: Pheasants

I wish I could spend more time pheasant hunting. It's the first thing I hunted as a kid and enjoy the hell out of it. Love watching the dogs work as much as shooting birds. Here in Minnesota the hunting isn't great but I have a few clients who own lodges in SD so I do most of my hunting over there.

Re: Pheasants

I hunt pheasants anywhere they exist. I will travel and have done the normal SD and KS destinations but MT and TX have been really good and there is some damn fine hunting fairly close in OK as well.

The real birds to hunt is Hungarian Partridge and Sharptail grouse on the big plains of MT.

Re: Pheasants

Kinda boring around here pretty easy to limit out in 5 minutes. But I do enjoy watching them walk around the yard and jump onto my propane tank.

If that's what you're into, there's a place in SD where they run horseback hunts for grouse and chickens.

Re: Pheasants

Have a buddy up there that has horse we hunt off of. Have to have some serious dog power to keep up with.

Looking into a trip to Canada this fall possibly.

Re: Pheasants

I'm from SoCal and travel to Hecla SD every fall for Pheasant and Deer hunting. My Moms family lives there.

Re: Pheasants

My father and I make a 600 mile trip once a year to visit relatives in South Dakota...and hunt a little on the side...haha

Not die hard by any means though. After allowing my father to convince me one too many times that "Come on, it's not that cold out!", I've learned that I don't need to eat that bad...if it's shitty weather outside, this hunter is stayin warm inside!

And you're right beretta, I don't even like going for opener anymore. 1) too many damn hunters. 2) too many damn birds! Takes all the fun out of it when you hunt for 15 minutes and limit out.

Re: Pheasants

I just spent last weekend in South Dakota at a clients lodge. I'm taking over the day-to-day management of the property. I've been looking for an excuse to move to SD, now I have it.

Re: Pheasants

I'm a Gamekeeper here in the UK, so all I ever do is hunt for the pheasant.
I'd love to see how you guys do it over the water, a bit of a culture shock for both of us no doubt.

Re: Pheasants

As die hard as I can be living up here in AK. I've made 15 or 16 annual trips to Williston, ND in search of those wiley roosters! The wife has been going the last 10 years or so as well, luckily she loves to hunt them nearly as much as I do.

Here's a few random pics.

Re: Pheasants

ROFL cover the dogs identity....

I used to make it up to Liberal KS every year to hunt but not so much lately. I enjoy pheasant hunting. I don't care about killing em or eating them though. I have friends who take a month off and start in ND to work their way back to TX.

How do you hunt them? I've been on several European style driven shoots, they're fun.

Driven with beaters over 6-10 standing guns is a very quick and lose description.

Re: Pheasants

I went on a hunt in the panhandle of Texas a few years ago.

We didn't have dogs which made this one of the most exhausting and entertaining hunts I have ever been on. By the end I switch over to BB shot because I would wounded the bird and they would just run off.

Not to be an ass but, I bet you had an IC choke in, I rarely ever lose a bird with a modified choke and 5 shot. Late season I will go with a full choke and 4 shot when they are flushing out there farther.

Can you get to a pattern board and test your gun with different loads?

You can kill birds consistently at 50+ yards with and IC choke and heavy target loads.

Re: Pheasants

Hunt a ton of ringnecks here in swk, very close to that liberal area. Its big time for me and my friends! I shoot a citori 20 ga with a ic/m choke shooting high brass 7 1/2's. Its the way to go. Have a friend that shoots a 28 ga shooting 7 1/2 and he makes people look stupid with the way he knocks em down. But we do get alot of practice.

Re: Pheasants

Does anyone know where the hot spots are at this year for pheasant hunting. I here some place aren't going to have to many birds this year.

Thanks,

Re: Pheasants

I hunt here in Ireland over a springer, the season is 1st Nov to the 31 Jan. I always use 32gram 6s in my sxs 1/4 and 1/2 chokes, knocks clean rarely have a runner
