RC FPV - Awesome

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

What cargo loads are you guys generally running? I'm hoping to eventually put one of the new gopro cameras on board, and those things are already 170g or so. Adding that to a standard easy start kit sounds like a bad idea at first glance, but is it generally just a motor/battery upgrade away?

Oh no, I would never think of doing something like that...

GoPros are easy, any plane that can pick up the rest of the FPV equipment should have no problem with the extra weight. This is really a DIY hobby, lots of experimenting. Check of FPVlabs (arctic introduced me to it) it's a one stop source for everything you ever wanted to know.

This is why the ZephyrII flying wing is popular, fast, efficient, and yes, carries a gopro right in the nose next to the navigation camera.

I'm thinking of getting one for each side also - that'll make it harder to launch but will give me side and rear recording capabilities.

Yes, 3S to 4S with a 1200-1400Kv motor and 70amp ESC.

NOTE - GoPro in front of plane...
That's a "RiteWing Zephyr II"

What plane is that? </div></div>

It's my twin Alpha 40. I thought it was a piece of tape flapping in the wind. Guess I need to check the props.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I have to thank this post and ArticLight for the idea.

As a PR project, I just received company funding and approval to lead development of a FPV vehicle that supports video, GPS location stream, GPS assisted navigation, auto altitude control, and ground thermal imaging. The rest of the details are open as this is new as of the last hour.
The effort needs to be part time in addition to my regular job functions but it will be a team effort with about 4 RF hardware, 2 Antenna designers, 4 embedded firmware/software, and 1 FCC Compliance engineer. Sounds like fun. It'll take a few weeks to get rolling but I plan on sharing some of the ideas and results.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

50cal,

Do you have a source on the 808 #11 cameras for $13? I'm seeing them all over ebay for about $40 and I'm also seeing a lot of mislabled ones, too.

I got a gopro for my motorcycle right now, but no way I'm putting it up in the air until I actually learn to fly.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Boom you can do that already. I don't know if the EZOSD has continuoal GPS location, mine comes on when I hit 0mph but Dragonlink does i think.

But I would recommend you go to Team BlackSheep and get their camera and PSU, very stable, bit pricier than a Sony SUPER HAD but it's also 690 lines vs 600 lines and I own one and can attest to how nice it is and how cool Trappy's customer support is.

You could spend a lot of money re-inventing the wheel, FPV has been taking a real foothold in the entire world...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Artic,
I've had some question in scope to work out on that aspect with utilizing internal HW vs. off-the-shelf. The initial build is free for any HW solution/presentation. The vehicle has been loosly mandated to be a quad-copter and the emphasis is on controlled or assigned autonomous flight pattern with payload.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

You will get a vastly simpler and less head-ache inducing setup if its manned. But then you have to have someone who knows what they are doing fly it. So its a trade off for money vs. easy of use.

Or you have someone who knows what they are doing and just wants to sit on his front lawn and fly....
I have a couple of friends that are pilots and I tried to teach them to fly R/C and they said "Forget it, flying the real thing is easier"...go figure!

OK I'll admit the charts are kicking my butt..

That's do-able as well but the pre-programming is beyond me, although...there is a guy in New Zealand that builds the pulse jet engines that programmed one to fly around - and then gave his plans to uncle sam to show how to do it...(so they know bad guys can do it?)...

Thinkign QuadCopter is where it's at for $$$ but then you gotta be careful not to get caught, FAA finds out you are making money and they will SHUT you down..

Making money at what? (did I miss something?)

And that formation flying is insane. Just think of THOSE possibilities.

Here's a lil vid I did the other day, only had about 45 minutes before I had to go to work.

Why go to the flying field when you can bring the flying field to YOU?

I know some guys do it but are you running any kind of telemetry systems to help you navigate your way around or do you only rely on terrain features to help you find your way?

Also, how far have you gone out?

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

I wonder what the neighbors think of that guy in the chair beside the road with the funny goggles? And no that was not me going into Wally World.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Well here ya go then LOL - I flew to Safeway and saw heads up on my way through the Wal-mart parking lot - with the flying wing - OMG is it loud...I heard it half a mile away..

I did go up over John Carlson road and got a nice 15 mile-away shot of Seattle...

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

How do you navigate this thing? Do use terrain features to establish your position and bring her back or are you running some sort of telemetry/GPS system?

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

It has a GPS in it but this particular style of "On Screen DIsplay" does not show the coordinates until it reaches 0mph - whether landing or crashing.

HOWEVER, all OSD's have a "Home" feature and they have an arrow on the screen that always points back to where you first initialize the GPS.

Plus I know this terrain since I live here but when I go fly to the mountains, 9 miles, I will absolutely be using every piece of that OSD - current measurement, home arrow, altitude, and MPH...

Try this link, it may or may not take you to the END of the video but go to the end:

Wish I'd checked this thread out last year. Looks like a blast. Thanks for the links to the other sites. Been doing more reading than my wallet is comfortable with. I see one of these setups in my future next year.

Re: RC FPV - Awesome

Update on the crapo'copter.

It's a hex. Most of the 'carrier mechanism' is defined.
Right now the flight controller (Arduino based) has GPS and the hardware will support autonomous flight.

The bi-directional radio-link (outside the manual remote) is in progress for a real-time video backhaul or telemetry and uplinking any flight/navigational commands.

Allot to do yet but the no-brain part is almost complete.
