Hello all, I wanted to submit a quick rundown of my digital krylon paint job. I've had a couple of people PM me asking how to do it, so figured I would post this. If this has already been done, I apologize in advance.

First and foremost, "I am no expert", this is just how I've done my rifles. Just a bare bones digital paint job. I'm currently doing a Savage 10 with a Choate tactical stock, so figured I would use this for my pictures.

I start by dissasembling the rifle. Removed stock, scope, rings, and bolt. I left the rail on, running low on lock tite. Next I wipe everything down with acetone and use a compressor to blow it out. I then wear latex gloves and rub everything down with rubbing alchohol. For this gun I am using a three color digi. Tan, OD green, and black. The base of this rifle is OD Green.

I let the paint cure for a day and then began to apply the stencils. I have used quite a few different stencils, but the bulldog stencils have worked the best for me. What I have learned is that using a blow dryer to heat the parts up a little works very well. The stencils will not stick on cold parts very well. The pattern is all preference, I wanted more OD Green in this rifle so the digi patterns that I used were the larger one's. This is as far as I've gotten with this rifle so far, but will post up when I get back on it. Here is a picture of the rifle reassembled with the stencils applied.

This second picture is of the rifle with the stencils after applying the tan paint. I'll post up the finish soon.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

I wish I lived in a neighborhood where I could dangle a rifle from a tree in my front yard. I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of the completed rifle.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

That is going to look good. Also, don't leave it hanging there too long that good looking pup appears to be a the point everything has to end up as a chew toy

Mine's 3...glad she is past all of that

Re: Digital Camo krylon

That would definitely be the last thing he ever chewed on!!! Naw, he's a good boy. Here's a funny story for ya, I live in a association where the nazi's come around giving you code violations. Well me and another detective were painting the teams AI's, and had guns all over the driveway, and yard. 3 day's later there was a violation ticket in my mailbox. The ticket was for $25, and some jackass wrote that I violated the rules by having junk laying in my yard. I faxed a copy of the $24,000 bill that our AI's cost and wrote, "see your ass in court". I received an apology letter the next day.

haha awesome story dude !!

Also looking forward to seeing the finished paint job.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Great story! I lived in association a while back with same Nazis and just hated them! They would measure your grass in case it was to long! I hated those assholes!!!

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Odd coincidence- I'm about to hang a rifle from a tree in the back yard & krylon it up today, too... Just gotta finish taping off

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Assholes is right, I pray I have the chance to catch one breaking some bullshit traffic violation in my neighborhood some time. I'll knock the dust off that ticket book and put it on someone!!!

Re: Digital Camo krylon

I definately want to see how this turns out. Maybe someday I can do this to my Savage.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

The association living sucks! We lived in one at one point in time and to say it blew was and understatement! Every little thing was scrutinized and they all feel high and mighty who write letters to the people who actually work and the grass was got pushed back a day or so... Thankfully no more of that for me!

Re: Digital Camo krylon

That is hilarious...HOA's can be good or bad. Ours is ran by a management company and the builder is still very much involved. They are good and not full of a bunch of wanna be power tripping aholes.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Certainly no expert myself but here are some thoughts....If you want OD green to be the primary color you should have used khaki as the base coat then applied the male stencils then spray with the green. Another option would to have placed many more male stencils to obtain more green. In the pictures you show, the rifle is going to be primarily tan/khaki with little OD green patches where the male stencils were applied. You need to think in reverse on your color layout or you will need to use female stencils.

OD green base coat, male stencils applied, sprayed khaki, applied female stencils and then filled areas with black and od green. Lightly misted the entire weapon with black and then applied a few coats of Valspar flat clear. The finish has held up well.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

El Gordo, I hear what your saying. I guess what I meant was that I wanted the OD to be my stand out color on the khaki primary. I sent you a PM a while back attempting to get some feedback from you, so that I could add your methods in with mine, I never heard from you. Anyway this is the finished product. After the final color was sprayed I let it dry for a day and applied several clear coats to protect a little better. I have a total of $35 into it, and about 2 hours of work. Hope this helps those of you who asked.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Do you clear coat over the camo paint or is it pretty solid without it?

Re: Digital Camo krylon

I do like to clear coat the finished product, it really helps to protect the paint. I use a matte clear coat, so it's not shiny. I have used my rifles without the clear coat and they do not do bad, but the paint lasts much longer with the clear coat.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Gathumper and El Gordo 2 both those rifles turned out awesome. I wanted to do my 700 in desert MARPAT but I didn't know you could buy digi stencils. I guess that is my fault for not doing the research. I am doing mine in the old school tricolor camo. Where did y'all get the stencils? I would like to try them on my Rock River.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

what kind of clear coat do you use and how well does it stand up?
Also if you think a hoa sucks there is a whole city near me with regulations like that.
You cant wash your car on the grass at your own home, you cant have a yard sale without an approval permit. They have people who drive around in a golf cart and make sure your grass isnt too long. if it snows heavily and you cant get home in time to shovel your area of sidewalk you will get a fine. if you leave your trash can out past 11 am on trash day you will get a fine. it is insane... I digress.
The krylon looks good. I think if i hung a rifle in my yard I would walk outside and be greeted by the local sheriffs version of a swat team.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Buck, bulldogstencils.com are what I have been using. I could not for the life of me remember that a week or so ago, but someone helped me out. I haven't bought any in a while, but they are the best that I have used so far. I think they are around $10 without the female stencils.

Boanerges, I use the Krylon crystal clear. It holds up pretty well, just understand that it is spray paint, so it is what it is. But I have no complaints for a $30 paint job. I have guns with years of use and they still look pretty good.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Those look freaking awesome! I tried it on my smith and wesson m and p but it did not turn out as good as yours. Keep it up!

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Dang those are killer paint jobs!

G-rott, I hope not but historically you are correct.

Re: Digital Camo krylon

Good job, taking your time and being diligent really shows in the end product.
