When loading the Berger OTM hybrid projectiles, which seating die is best for seating? The standard or the VLD model?

Re: Redding micrometer seating dies

I can't speak to that bullet, but I just switched to the Forster seating die after having issues with my Redding. I was using the VLD stem to seat the 75gr A-max on slightly compressed load. The seater stem expanded where it meets the ogive of the bullet, and now the die binds when using that stem.

After this happened to me I searched online and realized that I was late to the game, that the High Power shooters know all about this. Maybe I was heavy-handed with the press, but I do like the design of the Forster seating stem better. The Redding VLD stem is probably fine on uncompressed loads or if one is gentle with the press handle.

For what it's worth, when I originally got the VLD stem I called Redding and asked if I need to swap back to the standard for non-VLD bullets and the tech said no. Made me wonder why they didn't just use a VLD stem as standard. Maybe its relative fragility is the reason.
