i dont know if this is the right place to post this or not my uncle had his savage 110 bedded at a smith in southern wisconsin . they full length bedded it, my question is should we sand the bedding down from the lug to the fore-end or just leave it alone,i always thought it should free float we are having trouble finding a load for it. i thought that might be the problem ,but not sure? any help would be appreciated thanks to all in advance.

Re: free float or not ?

Conventional wisdom says to bed just the action and lug, allowing the barrel to float.

There are occasions with quite thin barrels however where it can benefit accuracy by bedding a pad for the barrel to rest on closer to the muzzle. If your barrel isn't a pencil profile though you should not need this.

I can't recall hearing of a barrel bedded the entire length of the stock being a good thing however.

Also, if your uncles stock is wood then many factors that effect the expansion/contraction/deflection of the stock will be translated to the barrel if full-length bedded. Not good for accuracy.
