I am getting ready to order a Tac ops but am torn on what type of stock to get. All I have ever used is your run of the mill factory stocks. This will be a 75% of the time hunting gun with the other 25% being bench/range/comp. I was thinking a Tango or maybe the Delta or something with a adj A3-5. You guys that have experience with these stocks what would you suggest. I know its a lot of personal peeference but I have no way of trying them out.

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

i had an echo with the A-2. It was a very comfortable stock on all positions. The A-3 has a thinner forend than the A-2,so you may like it more for hunting. The Tango is the obvious choice if you plan on hunting mostly.

Call Mike R and ask him, he'll give you the run down

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

If your going to e carrying that much get a tango

I'm considering a Kilo-51 which uses a McMillan Adjustable A3-5. But I want to add Edge (100% graphite fiber w/pillars installed), spacer system, flush cups, Anschutz rail and no cheek hardware installed so KMW can install their (IMO) much better cheek hardware instead. The A3-5 is fairly stiff, light enough and easy to get to fit the shooter right.

Of course you know that no good tactical rifle is going to be truly light as most of the weight is in the barrel and scope.

HTH!

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

i have a a3-5 on my GAP and its a great stock but honestly for a 70 percent hunting gun i would still say tango and the lightweight stock it brings. firgure if you need the adjustability its nice but if you can shoot the nonadjustable fine then its uneeded weight.

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

Thanks for the info guys. Do you have any idea fo the difference in weight between the tango and A3-5?

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

If I could have a TacOps in a stock of my choosing, I think it would be a KMW Sentinel Stock. Thats if Mike would do it.

I've handled all of the different models of Tac Ops rifles and shot quite a few. Considering that you'll be carrying the rifle most of the time - as BigJoe and jpspeeddemon have suggested, a Tango is the ticket for you. The Tango is lightweight and "points" very quickly and naturally - it's as if the rifle is an extension of your arms. Plus, the Tango's handy size and lightweight allow it to be carried all day so you're not too burnt to make the shot when it counts.

He will, I've talked to him about it.

Again, as BigJoe suggested, it's best to call Mike Rescigno for numbers. I've also never weighed either, and it's been months since I handled an un-mounted Tango and an un-mounted Kilo (A3-5) side-by-side and I never really paid too much attention to the weight difference between them because I wasn't thinking about it.

The Tango traditionally has a non-adjustable stock and is configured with what I'd describe as a light varmint contour barrel 18.5-20" in length, while the Kilo (A3-5) only comes in an adjustable-cheekpiece and is typically configured with a heavier barrel contour in the same length, but sometimes slightly longer (19.5-21.5" to end of rifled bore). "Sniper fill" is standard in all Tac Ops rifles. To me, there is a very noticable weight differential between a Tango and a Kilo, but I also picked-up my scoped X-Ray 51 and guessed the actual weight to within 4 ozs.

For comparison, a Kilo will be a little lighter than an X-Ray with an otherwise identically-configured barrelled action and bottom metal combination. My X-Ray 51 has the KMW ACH (Adjustable Cheekpiece Hardware) and configured with [34mm] Mark 4 High Rings (Leupold P/N #59320), 40 MOA Tac Ops Two-Piece Base, PMII 5-25X[56mm] with 2" USO ARD, F & R BC Flip Opens, and the little ACCU-SHOT BT28 Picatinny Rail that rides in the Anschutz Rail's slot and mates with the bipod's QD mount, weighs 16.0 lbs. (no bipod or Stock Pack).

If I attach a Larue LT706 + Harris BRM-S (6-9" Notched Swivel) to the BT28 the weight increases to 16.8 lbs. If I also attach a Tac Ops Stock Pack with a pair of Red Tac Gear LT Tool Packs loaded with a cut down 1/2" wrench and TorX T15 for the rings, hex wrenches for the bottom metal, BT28, PMII Turret, Larue tension-adjustment wrench, Lens Pen, and ear plugs the weight increases to 17.4 lbs without ammo in the eight [8] ammo loops.

My X-Ray 51 is 16.8 lbs. as shown (16.0 lbs. without bipod):

NOTE: Leupold 34mm Mark 4 High Rings (Leupold P/N #59320) are 1.06" and weigh exactly 9.9 oz. coated in Green-T & Black-T. Seekins 34mm High Rings (.970") weigh exactly 4.9 oz. coated in Green-T & Black-T (i.e. 5 oz. less, or half of the weight of Mark 4s'.

Hope this helps.

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

75% hunting - go with the Tango. I have an A3-5adj and typically use it in the prone position. For a tiny bit of off-hand, it is ok, but it is hell toting around. I hunt with it maybe 5% of the time, so it is still the stock for me, but for you, the Tango sounds like the ticket.

Tac Ops will do a lighter contour (i.e., the contour that is used in the Tango) if that's what you really want. However, neither Mike Rescigno or I recommend that. The A5 was designed to be shot from the prone position, and as such it has the widest, flatest forearm of all of the McMillan A Series (tactical) stocks and is designed to be shot off of a bag or a bipod. It's also a little heavier in front.

Also, the A5's barrel channel is also designed to accomodate heavy barrels, situating them lower in the forearm for better stability and a lower profile. An A5 with a barrel channel for a slender barrel is going to look strange, and possibly even moreso with a barrel channel for a heavy barrel coupled with a slender barrel. The A5 with a Varmint profile barrel just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Tac Ops has done Tango and slightly heavier contour barrels in the A3-5 Adjustable (Kilo) stock, and either of those two barrel profiles "work" in the Kilo and the Delta (A3). If you're going to be carrying it a lot, as I (as well as BigJoe, jpspeeddemon, and Carter Mayfield) suggested to stoney15 - get a Tango, or a Delta (A3) or Kilo (A3-5) with a lighter contour.

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

You could do a Delta 51 with a Tango contour barrel to lighten it up. Thats what I ordered. I wanted something I could shoot from just about any position and still be able to carry in the field for varmint hunting or moving around on a range.
My GAP 10 weighs in between 13-15 pounds depending on the optic im running. It's a heavy bitch to carry all day. Mike said this rifle should be lighter than my GAP. I don't plan on deer hunting with it unless I'm still hunting (we hunt with dogs normally and that requires a lot of moving).

Call Mike and talk to him is the best advice.

Re: which stock for my Tac Ops

stoney, are you in Minnesota? If so, my Tango is ready to ship and will be here soon. I like in Elk River, but I'd be happy to meet you at a range somewhere for you to try the Tango out and see if it would be what you're looking for.
