I have a 1964 Remington 700 w/ 24 in Varmint Barrel. It has a 6 digit serial. I picked it up online, a couple years ago when I was in high school and wanted to start my first long range rifle. When I got it, I was told it belonged to an older gunsmith. It had an old wood stock that had a matching wood piece glued to the front that would resemble a modern bench rest stock. Since then I ordered stock from HS and put on a Leupold VXII 4.5-14x Tactical, Stainless Trigger Guard, Harris S-BR, and some burris rings. I have been reloading 175gr SMK with 40gr. Varget. The gun shoots like a champ and I easily get .5 inch groups. I know they didn't make the m40 till 1966 but I believe this is the same model they used for it. What I would like to know is if you owned this would you retire it for its age if it has any collector value or would just keep shooting it to enjoy it and replace the barrel if needed down the road? Any other comments or info is welcome

Re: M40 Suggestions

Serial number must just be a bit over 100,000 if it is a '64?

Also barrel wouldn't be original to the receiver as the Varmint Special it was called didn't come about till late 67 or early 68! The Varmint Special came about in part because of the M40, not the other way around. It has no collector value without original stock and barrel and would have to be near mint.

Shoot It!!

Alright thanks! I called Remington and they said it was a 64. But the barrel has the matching brown color that I thought they did for bluing before a certain year. Theres also sight screw wholes on the barrel from the front and back sights. Hmm. I cant seem to find more information
