Did this rifle meet your expectations?

Have you had to make any mods or upgrades to get it right?

What type of glass do you have on yours?

Any regrets?

Thank You

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

exceded my expectations... I shoot FTR with mine and regularly win over all clasifications except the one High Master.
Mods are Jewel trigger @ 6 oz and adjustable THICK recoil pad.
NF 8-32 NXS
Only regret is not doing this sooner

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I think this rifle is a nice surprise right out of the box. Swap in a decent trigger and add a good scope...and you have a nice rig!

Good Luck,

Wayne

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Total noob here, but getting sub moa, 20" barrel. First time shooting past 150 last weekend. I zero'd at 100, then the gentlemen I was with took me directly to 450 and I dinged the headshot plate my first 4 shots. Of course I had to guesstimate my velocity and he gave me the dope. My loads are 42gr 4064, 175 SMK, about 2550 fps at 2.79 OAL.

Vortex PST 6-24 SFP, Harris Swiv 6-9

Can't really say I'm happy until I shoot more, but was surprised what this barrel has done with even factory ammo.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Love mine, Shoots under 1/2 moa all day long for me. several 3 shot groups in less than 3/16"

I added a timney trigger first, then i added the AICS stock and it seemed to cut the recoil down by 30-40%. I have a NF NXS 12-42x56 scope on top now.

Overall it is an impressive rifle. I piss a lot of guys off at the range who have 4k+ in their rifles.

Favored load is 42 gr varget and 3.805 coal 175gr smk bullets.

Hope this helps!

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I'm happy with mine. Shot really well bone stock. I wasn't a huge fan of the trigger so I put a Jewell on it. I'm using a 4.5-30x50 Bushnell Elite 6500 Tactical and am happy with both scope and gun for the money. The local groundhogs don't care for it too much.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Very pleased with mine.

Shot very well with the factory trigger adjusted to 3.5 lbs.

I liked the stock, it is a very good stock. I did upgrade it though as I wanted a DBM and I figured by the time I bought the BM and had the stock inletted, it would be over half the cost of a chassis.
As far as the barrel, the very few occasions that i have cleaned it have proven that it does not foul very much and is easy to clean.

The rifle is very accurate.
Glass is an IOR 3-18x42 FFP.
Stock is an XLR Chassis.
Trigger was replaced with an old style remington tuned to 3.5 lbs.
Side bolt release, having bolt knob installed right now and the barrel has been threaded with a cap.
Next purchase will be a .300 mag rated Jet Suppressor.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I am three times happy for I own all three that are offered.they all shoot like a champ.

The nice used 5R I bought in an AICS surprised me a little bit based on the reviews I had read. Many of them read like it's just another Remington 700 and nothing any different than a Remington 700 Police or SPS. This has not been my experience.

Granted as I received my 5R Milspec it had already been upgraded with the AICS but I don't think the AICS made the 5R shoot as well as it does. The first time I shot my 5R all I did was lightly swab out the bore and mount the same old IOR 3-18x42 FFP scope and Seekins 20MOA base/ring combo I took off my old 700 BDL heavy barrel varmint.

After carefully torqing everything in place after getting the reticle plumb and using the same handloads I used in the old Remington 700 BDL the new Remington 5R only required 0.1mil less elevation and 0.1mil left windage to zero at 100 yards. It was amazing to me that these two rifles separated by nearly 40 years of production and an extra land and groove would shoot into essentially the same hole. Once zeroed the new Remington 5R managed to shoot some sub 1/2" groups without much effort on my part. My old Remington 700 BDL heavy barrel varmint used to shoot better than this but with over 10K rounds out the tube she was getting tired and the best she had been shooting recently was a little under 3/4" at 100 yards.

Since the first trip to the range with the 5R my old Remington 700 BDL heavy barrel varmint has been parted out and the action put in the very good hands of Mike R. (the owner of TacOps) waiting to be reborn as a Kilo-51. Which is how I came to own the 5R. I had to have a .308 to shoot while my TacOps Kilo-51 was being created down in Beverly Hills.

I updated the AICS R5 with a Seekins 20MOA one piece base and appropriately sized Seekins 34mm rings for my Premier Heritage 5-25x56 Gen2 XR CCW DT scope. I also installed a Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger set to 2# pull total. I'm not sure my groups will get much better but they will be easier to produce with the finer Gen 2 XR crosshair reticle over the MP-8's 0.1mil center dot tactical reticle. The Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger can't hurt either.

Speaking of 2-stage triggers the first 2-stage trigger I owned was a Kidd trigger for my 10/22. That Kidd 2-stage proved to me that a 2-stage trigger was what I wanted to be shooting with. Some folks don't get it but for folks who like 2-stage triggers they will love shooting a Huber on their Remington 700s.

The only regret I have is that I did not retire my old Remington 700 BDL heavy barrel varmint sooner so it could go off to TacOps!

HTH!

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Very much so. I have only taken out to 300 but sub 1/2 moa always. Mark 4 6.5 x 20 on it. 20" threaded barrel.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

With the 5R you will not be disappointed with the accuracy. It was my first long range precision rifle so I put a SS 10X fixed on there. I can't really speak to out of the box accuracy because I was a pretty bad shooter in the beginning but it was always under 1MOA with FGMM. Here's the list of mods I've made:
AICS, TImney trigger, Badger Rings and Base (original low leupold rings caused an ejection interference problem), KRG bolt lift, Atlas bipod, mono-pod, AI adjustable comb, Tab sling, Bader FTE brake, plus a couple trips to the gunsmith for threading and relieving the stock for the trigger safety and bolt release

I went cheap on the glass but I think that was probably my best decision as I spent around $2500 on ammo over the next year. I haven't done a lot of timed/counted events but the few that I have with this gun I've been very happy to be one of the few who hit the long stuff @ 800+ yds. During practice with no wind @ 500 I once hit a 35% IPSC steel target 28 out of 30 times. I'm sure the two misses were me and not the gun.

Every guy I've ever bumped into at ranges or comps smiles if I ask them if they like their 5r. I won't ever add up what I've spent on this gun but I'm pretty sure it's up there with a custom gun. The education and fun experimenting to find what I like has been invaluable.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I've not shot mine yet so I won't comment on accuracy. Points of complaint:

X-Mark Pro trigger sucks balls. Sure it's low on creep and over-travel, but it could be better. Even more, the adjustment screw accessible on the trigger- didn't do anything on mine.

I had the base holes opened to 8-40; I do this on everything... might not really be a required (actually, I'm sure it's not needed on my .223), but it's peace of mind for me and only costs me $40 each.

Glad my threaded barrel came with a cap- wasn't sure if it would.

Stock on my .308 came slightly damaged; waiting on word back from remington on that.

Otherwise, pretty happy!

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I'm very happy with my .308 5R. It's a great way to get into long range, precision shooting without taking out a second mortgage on your house. My rifle is still stock except for Duracoat. The trigger is OK, I will eventually upgrade but it's low on my priority list. The 24" barrel makes for a handy package and I like the stock. The 5R is easier to clean than other bolt guns I have owned. After my tax return arrives I will get an extended bolt handle and a CDI DBM trigger guard.

Regarding accuracy, it has met my expectations. With the right handloads it is a consistent 1/2-3/4 MOA rifle and I've had numerous groups smaller than that. I get the best accuracy with Sierra or Nosler 175s and IMR 4064 or RE-15.

I'm using a Leupold MK4 3.5x10 TMR with a MK4 20 MOA base and MK4 rings.

The throat was a little bit longer than I would like but it still shoots great, even with ammo loaded to mag length. Buy one, I don't think you'll find a better rifle for $1,000.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Love mine. I've got the 20" factory threaded barrel. I shoot it with a AWC thundertrap.

I get consistent 1/2 MOA accuracy out of it with factory Federal Gold Medal Match. Just starting to work up hand loads for it and prelim tests are regularly rewarding me with .3" groups at 100yrds.

I've got a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 scope w/ Badger Ordanance 20 MOA base and rings.

Still using the stock trigger. Cleaned it up and brought it down to a crisp 3 lbs. Will probably swap it out for a Jewel at some point.

Also use the rifle for F/TR mid-range. It's a serious contender at 600.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I have the 5R and hell yes I am very happy with it...same as SABuzzard above with the regular reward of very nice groups at 100yds...

Nightforce 3.5-15 x 50 scope w/ Badger Ordanance 20 MOA base and rings...

Stock trigger has been adjusted to 3 lbs...

***The only change I need now is a damn limbsaver because after 2 boxes of ammo my shoulder is not happy...

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I have about 1800 Rds through mine. Its very easy to clean, very little coppering, and while the throat is generous to put it kindly, it seems to handle anything. It has shot 130's through 208's with no issues. It will absolutely shoot 175's and 185's. My AR10 SR LR loads are with a 185 @ 2.95 OAL, and the 5R shoots them remarkably well. I dare say 1/4 MOA. It scary. I can take the same load and push the OAL down to fit in an AI Mag and get simmilar results as the 175's, 1/3 MOA. Not quite as good as single load length ones, but pretty good, and @2700 fps too. ( yeah its stout) I really do like th rifle. I have only heard of one that wouldn't shoot. A friend of mine had the problem. I trust him 100% on his evaluation of a rifle and he is a very talented shooter and skilled reloader, and he couldn't get his to shoot. Its a shame, but He made the effort. On;y one I have ever heard bad about.
The first thing I did that made the biggest difference was take it out of the stock, clean the underside and mounting surfaces and set it back in there centered up and torqued the action screws to 65 in lbs. That alone took it to 1/3 MOA from 3/4 moa or more, but it wa a little inconsistant between 1/3-1/2 MOA. Then I had it bedded, and it stayed at 1/3 MOA but consistanly so, 100% of the time. Also had surgeon bottom metal installed at the same time. Didn't do anything else until recently, had it ceracoated Black by Dave at Accurate Ordnance, Excellent finish btw, I want to do every rifle I own in Cera now. ( Dave also bedded the rifle when he was at APA. ) He's an artist with the coatings and bedding, btw, and helpful far beyond whats required of anyone. I am currently working out details on a trigger option, I am wanting a 2 stage, and I am trying out an X-Treme 2 stage. Not 100% on that one as of right now. We will see how it goes.

The rifle looks pretty plain, but shoots tremendously. Its one of the few rifles I own that I feel 100% comfortable with and that I trust to tell me things and teach me things. I had the .223 version as well, and it was pretty good, but the 1-9 twist was a bit of a limiter. I like shooting 77's through the Service rifle, and the little 5r would stabilize them, but having a bolt gun with a 24 in barrel is begging for at least an 80 gr. So AO has the action and will install a Rock Creek 1/8 wist 5R barrel, and set the rifle up exactly as the 308 is. Its for my son you know?
wink.gif
I'll just break it in with a few thousand rounds for him.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Made my first trip to the range with mine today. Time was limited so I ended up with only 25 rounds down range to zero and shoot a five shot group and two rows of the SH dot drill target.

I'm very, very happy with mine and the other guys I was shooting with were very impressed as well.
So far all I've done to mine was install a Timney 510 trigger and set it to 2.25 lbs which was a massive improvement over the stock trigger.
I have a 15 or 20 year old B&L 10x 40 on mine in some seekins rings on a seekins 20 moa rail.

Sight in was quick and easy. The first 5 shot group I fired was .750 on centers and that was in gusting 10 - 15 mph winds coming from all directions. I kept them all in black on the first row of the Dot Drill target and this was my first time behind a bolt gun in maybe 5 years or more.

I can't wait to see what it will do once I've learned the fundamentals better and had a chance to stretch it out some.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I must be the oddball...my 5R shot good for a factory rifle, but my Savages out shoot the 5R. I ended up selling the 5R since I never bought into all of the hype.

I have less money into my Savages and I can do most of the work myself.

Don't believe all the hype about the Remington 5R. Flame away newbies.

Just because you got a rifle that you can't make shoot doesn't mean all of the rifles are bad. Every line of production rifles will have a few examples that just don't shoot as well as the more typical example. This is just the way it works with these things.

If you read the reviews generally the 5R rifles shoot average to better then the standard production 700. Chances are you were just unlucky.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Mines great! 8-32 Monarch, on top, and she's still "factory". Shoots like a dream, with the proper handload.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Couldn't be more happy, I was on the fence about it for a while, because there are cheaper options like sps tactical, varmint, police, etc. (Remington options that is)But things I like about the 5r are the barrel length, contour, twist, stock, brand. It's stainless which I didn't like too much but I just cerakote mine and love that finish. I have 200rds down the tube and its a shooter. Like others have said you can't go wrong with this stock Remmy stick.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

5R 20 Inch Factory Threaded Barrel. Now has AAC Brake, 20 MOA Base with the new Bushnell Elite 3.5-21 x 50 mm Elite Tactical Scope with GAP G2DMR (Awesome) Reticles. Last but not least, now in a Manner T4A Stock with a Badger Mini Chasis. The word Happy is a understatement with this rifle. However, like almost all will say, the Factory Trigger is pretty much worthless, That'd be the first thing that should be replaced. I changed out the Stock because it was too short and light for my taste, also I didn't really like the HS Precision products to start with but that's another story altogether. All I can say is, it's not the Best but it sure with hang with the best of them. Buy it, save the extra custom gun money on a Good Glass and Ammo and then shoot the crap out of it and make it truely your own. Chances are, 95% of us regular folks here will NEVER out grow or shoot this rifle. Good luck!

Quick Question, how did you adjusted the Factory Trigger? Did you only adjusted the External screw on the trigger or the actual internals? Was it hard to do? I now the old remington trigger had 3 screws that needs to be adjusted at the same time to get it right. I don't know if that's something I'm ready to mess with or not. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I purchased a 5R .308 as my first precision bolt action a few weeks ago. After a couple of trips to the range, I can say it shoots better than me. Seriously, it makes me look like a hero on paper.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I'm happy with mine. It's in a McMillan and I switched the trigger to a Timney.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Update:

I was out at the range a few weeks ago shooting my new to me AICS 5R after installing a Premier 5-25 and Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger. Shooting at the same rifle range and from the same batch of handloads all I can say is WOW! The finer Premier 5-25 Gen2 XR reticle makes shooting smaller groups much easier than the IOR's 0.1mil tactical dot. The Huber Concepts trigger release has an incredibly smooth frictionless release which was very predictable. My groups didn't actually get any smaller than the best groups I shot before but the variation in group size is much smaller overall. Being able to actually see the center of the target and the improvement in trigger release can make a difference. I would be very comfortable calling my AICS 5R a 1/2MOA or better gun.

Buzzard,

Try to find someone shooting at your range who has a Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger installed in a Rem700.

The first 2-stage trigger I tried on one of my own rifles was a Kidd 2-stage trigger on my hot-rodded up Ruger 10/22 Target. I was very impressed by the way the Kidd 10/22 2-stage trigger released the hammer. Needless to say the Kidd 2-stage was a massive upgrade over even the upgraded trigger supplied with the Ruger 10/22 Target model which was by centerfire rifle standards absolutely horrid.

So I did some research to find a good 2-stage trigger for my AICS 5R and found a few options. The Huber Concpets 2-stage while newer was well reviewed and had fewer reported mechanical issues, most being not used to using a 2-stage trigger. Huber offers a hefty discount for Hide members which was the icing on the cake.

So I bought a Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger, installed it and shot a few hundred rounds with it. Based on this IMO the Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger has a much smoother feel and cleaner break than a Jewel trigger. The Huber Concepts 2-stage is also safer at lighter trigger pull weights being a 4-bar 2-stage trigger. But the main attraction to me is the virtually frictionless trigger action leading to a very fast smooth release of the firing pin.

What was impressive to me is that as good as the release of a Jewel is the Huber Concepts 2-stage is even better. You have to try it to believe it and you don't have to shoot them side by side to feel the difference as the Huber Concepts trigger feel and release is unlike any other single stage trigger. Of course a few people like the feedback of a conventional trigger take up to which I say to each his own. I don't think there are all that many Huber Concepts 2-stage triggers out there yet but you really have to try releasing a Huber Concepts 2-stage trigger to believe it!

HTH!

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

Not to derail the thread, but is there a difference in the quality of the action of the 5R vs a regular 700?

To my knowledge, the only different is the perlaged bolt, 5R barrel and the stock.

love my 5R.

I did not modify it, the gentleman I purchased it from did:
stock is bedded with Seekins DBM and Karsten adjustable cheekpiece. Glass is SS 5-20.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I love mine. was hitting my 10"x18" AR500 target at 1000+ yards the first day I got it with my generic-full-sized-175gr-SMK load.

Still working up a load for it. Right now I think 43.5 Varget in LC cases is the ticket.

I Christianed it the The Cartmann-M24-AE-Mark-III-mod-34-Bo-Jackson

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

My 5R is in 223. I changed the stock to a McM, and the trigger to a Huber Concepts. For a scope, I am using the SWFA SS 5-20.

This is a great, moderate cost, very accurate rifle.

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

I am super pleased with mine. First day out was shooting mouse ear groups with cheap federal soft point. after breaking in with that ammo, went to black hills match and shot about 1.5 inches at 500yds. this with no mods, running a VXIII 6.5-20x50. it is now being threaded for badger FTE and putting a timney trigger in. I will say I was not pleased with the factory trigger at all. Looking forward to getting it back on ground

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

My 5R shoots lights out....... 100-1000 yards.

If a 5 shot 100 yard group is not covered by a dime its my fault!

Typical 300 yard group is 1.5" - 2" and 500 yard is around 3".

Re: Rem 700 Milspec 5r Owners are you happy?

yes,put mine in a McMillan A1-3, bed job, cut barrel to 20 and threaded. Very consistent shooter. Some days it outshoots my full builds.

what kind of optics are you guys running? I have the 20 inch version and I have a 3-9x40 for now but I want to get out to 600 yards +. I think I am looking for a Mil mil set up.
