I would like a do it all round... f-class, tactical matches, and hunting (mostly deer, maybe a rare elk). Stipulations are no bigger than .308 (the less recoil the better) and I've narrowed my two choices to the 7mm SAUM (more reciol but best BC), 6.5 SLR for bolt, or 6mm Creedmoor for AR-10, but I wanted to know others opinion's on a long range 1000yd caliber if they could only choose one. I know the AR gives up a bit to the others, but a Semi-auto seems like a fun challenge for long range. Thanks for your opinions

Re: Only one caliber?

" maybe a rare elk :)" Depends on how rare the elk would be and how far of a shot you would want to take on an animal of that size.

Re: Only one caliber?

haha, my uncle goes every year... I'm not one for sitting in a stand, but I do enjoy the spot and stalk for a shot in range. 600-700 yards would probably be the max. The best hunt ever was spotting two mulies a mile off and getting within 30 yards behide a bush, and ended up taking a 10pt after he ran a few yards. Dropped in his tracks with my old 243

. I like my .308, but I like being different more

Re: Only one caliber?

Ooooh! How about a 7mm Rem Mag? Probably your best bet for an "All Around" rifle. If you can't take the recoil from a 7RM, you might wanna consider another hobby.... like scrap booking... (only foolin')

Re: Only one caliber?

243 with a 7.5 or 8 twist. Easy on the shoulder and kills very well. It's all I use these days
6.5CM or 260 work great
7mm-08 a little more recoil but great bullet selection

280 a little more recoil, but not terrible. Really about perfect if you don't want to shoot a magnum.

Re: Only one caliber?

.243/6mm Rem, .257R/25-06, .260/6.5 something or 7mm/.280. They all kill well. At extreme long ranges it pretty much boils down to wind. How much wind. How light/heavy your bullet is and what BC it has with what velocity it starts out at.

Anything in those categories with an accurate rifle and well made scope will serve well as an all purpose rifle. Note that none of my choices require you shoot a magnum.

Re: Only one caliber?

I think 7-08 or 7-08AI is the best "all around" cartridge/chambering. Factory ammo readily available, fantastic ballistics, low recoil, great barrel life, easy to load.

Re: Only one caliber?

TPB.....JUST SAY NO!!!! Don't Do it!!!

Resist the temptation of the 260, I jumped on the bandwagon a couple years ago and fell in love. Came from 7mm Rem as my previous all around hunting load and gotta say it was the best move I ever made. I was fortunate enough to track down a new stainless action/barrel 260 Remington Mountain LSS out of Utah last fall, and the thing is light, accurate as hell and soft shooting. That is now my main whitetail and antelope gun.

I have to warn you though, the one thing bad about switching to the 260 that nobody tells you is that its extremely addictive. Be prepared to buy a bigger safe because you'll find yourself needing to buy more of them. First it's just a LR bolt gun, then it's the AR platform (if you're a black gun guy) "like a JP LRP-07 in 260", and soon you're lying to your wife as your safe begins to fill up and you're telling her it's the same gun you had before you just duracoated it a different color. Before you know it you find yourself caught up in a whirlwind affair with a hot little number with a size 6.5 waist.

All I can stay is stay clear of the 260 if you ever want to sleep soundly at night without constantly dreaming of the next 6.5 you can bag!!!

Re: Only one caliber?

HAHAHA! I think your warning had the opposite affect... While I think a 7mm would be the best for BC reasons, recoil is very important to me. Now which to run with first... bolt or AR. That 'tis the question. I have an old Savage 110 long action 243 that would be great for some SA 6.5s with really long bullets.... Oh the ideas

Re: Only one caliber?

Too many conditions to consider, for this kid. Hunting with a semi auto is a non starter for me anyway but stopping at an upper limit of 308Winchester, (or is it bore size?) means that we have to consider something nonstandard. And, 1000 yard and elk hunting? Come on, be serious!

This is not a legitimate question and there is no chance that Tpb10505 will rush out and build a gun based on what is hashed out in this thread.

This begs the question, in the first place; why do we have so many choices? Maybe they should have ceased cartridge case development in 1906 with the Springfield? It would have simplified everything, except the wide assortment of bullet weights available ....and BC2.

I can't even hazard a guess? I have a decent 1000 yard rifle chambered in 243Ackley, but it weighs 15 pounds. I also killed a wide assortment of one shot African game with a 6MM Remington including elk size kudu, so, (as far as I am concerned) the .243" bore is up to the challenge, with the right bullet. Still, semi auto? BB

Re: Only one caliber?

I may not meet the average age around here but I'm no kid lol, and If you read more carefully I stated my max range for hunting would be 6-700yds, which I feel is more than reasonable. And I don't think using a Gap AR-10 for hunting with their proven accuracy is near ludacris... I'm just bouncing ideas around for the closest thing I can come to an all purpose caliber/rifle that could handle just about any job from hunting, tactical matches, to 600 & 1000yd F-class... Thanks for the input
